‘Nervous' Hong Kong's ODI and World Cup hopes hurt by collapse in Uganda defeat
'Nervous' Hong Kong were outplayed in a bruising 76-run loss to Uganda on Thursday that has left their ODI and 2027 World Cup hopes dangling by a thread.
Chasing 277 to win at Kowloon Cricket Club, Hong Kong collapsed from 38 for 0 to 56 for five in a catastrophic 10.4-over spell.
Uganda's Alpesh Ramjani, who started the procession when he trapped Martin Coetzee in front, claimed four for 18, to add to his rollicking 68 with the bat.
While jubilant Uganda strengthened their grip on Cricket World Cup Challenge League B's top spot, Hong Kong were left to consider the ramifications of what Simon Willis, the head coach, called 'a disappointing day at the office'.
Willis refused to label Sunday's meeting with second-placed Italy a 'must win', but defeat against the team that thumped them by 155 runs in November's opening leg would, in all probability, condemn Hong Kong to one-day international exile for another five years.
Hong Kong had comfortably beaten Singapore and Bahrain, before Wednesday's match against whipping-boys Tanzania was abandoned. And Willis suspected the raised stakes against top-two rivals Uganda had 'played on some people's minds'.

Ex-England Sevens star Simon Amor returning to Hong Kong to take up performance role
Former England Sevens star Simon Amor is returning for a second stint with Hong Kong, after being appointed as the new executive director of performance and representative rugby. The 46-year-old briefly took charge of the senior men's side in June 2021 as interim head coach ahead of the Covid-delayed Asia Rugby Championship, leaving six months later to become technical director of Japan's Sevens programme. Amor, who worked as the attack coach for the England XV's side when Eddie Jones was in charge, joins with Hong Kong preparing for the most important six weeks in the team's history. A place at the men's 2027 World Cup awaits the winners of this year's championship, and Amor is expected to be at Hong Kong's first game, away to the United Arab Emirates on June 14. Amor's remit will also include guiding the women's bid to qualify for the XVs World Cup, and helping both sevens squads try to reach an Olympic Games. 'I am delighted to be returning to Hong Kong China Rugby at an incredibly exciting time in the organisation's proud history,' Amor said in a statement released by HKCR.

The 55-year-old, who steered French powerhouses Lyon to their fourth consecutive women's league title last month, said it was "the honour of a lifetime". "This team means so much to so many Australians, and I'm humbled by the opportunity to help shape its next chapter," he said. "I've followed their incredible journey closely and am energised by the passion, resilience, and identity they've built." The Matildas captivated the nation and won legions of new fans with their run to the last four of the World Cup on home soil in 2023. But an underwhelming Paris Olympics last year saw Tony Gustavsson depart and they have been without a permanent head coach since. Tom Sermanni, a 70-year-old Scot, has been in temporary charge during a protracted recruitment process, with the side sliding to 16th in the world. "Joe brings world-class experience, a deep understanding of the Australian football landscape, and a genuine connection to our national identity," said Football Australia interim chief Heather Garriock. "Importantly, he has spent the last decade coaching at the very highest levels of the women's game in Europe and brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football," she added.
