AI to spur more music creativity, not a threat: Spotify CEO
AFP | Artificial intelligence will encourage more people to create music in the future and is not a threat to the industry, the founder and CEO of streaming giant Spotify said. Artists using machine-learning tools to produce music have given rise to concerns about whether AI-generated music -- even entirely fake artists -- could one day replace human artists. "I'm mostly optimistic and mostly very excited because we're just in the beginning of understanding this future of creativity that we're entering," Daniel Ek told reporters at an Open House at the company's Stockholm headquarters this week. Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter and a recent book, "Mood Machine", have accused Spotify of tasking a handful of producers to make thousands of songs under fake AI profiles, which the company allegedly pushed onto playlists -- saving Spotify money by elbowing out real artists and their higher royalties. Spotify has denied the claims. "We want real humans to make it as artists and creators, but what is creativity in the future with AI? I don't know. What is music?" Ek said. He recalled that electronic dance music and the DJ culture, and before that, hip hop where people sampled music, were initially not considered "real music". Noting that Mozart had to compose entire symphonies in his head, Ek said that "now, any one of us can probably create a beat in five or 10 minutes". "The tools that we now have in our availability are just staggering." "Of course there are very scary potential applications for AI, but the more interesting thing for me is that the amount of creativity that creative people will have available at their fingertips is going to be insane," he said. "The barriers for creation are becoming lower and lower. More and more people will create," he said. Ek said he saw the development of AI in the music industry "much more as an evolution than a revolution". Spotify had 678 million active users at the end of March, including 268 million paying subscribers. Ek said the company, which turned its first annual profit in 2024, now had 100 million paying subscribers in Europe alone, and hoped to one day see a billion paying users worldwide. "I don't think there's any doubt in my mind that the potential for Spotify at some point is to eventually get to over a billion paying subscribers."

Volvo CE expands Iron Women programme to India
In a major move, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) said it has begun expanding its global vocational initiative - Iron Women - to India in a bid to address both its industry gender disparity and the need for skilled operators and technicians. The pioneering model aims to reshape societal norms in India that discourage women from technical vocations while supporting underprivileged communities to access training. The program is driven by a collaboration between Volvo CE India, dealer partner Pollutech Engineering and customer Kalinga Commercial Corporation Limited (KCCL). This new phase in the construction-focused Iron Women program comes after an initial roll out in Ukraine last year, where the need for qualified operators to support rebuilding efforts has never been more critical, said the company in a statement. According to Volvo CE, India's construction equipment sector faces a significant gender gap, particularly in operator and technician roles. This is made worse by limited access to training and education for women from underprivileged backgrounds. At the same time, there is a widespread shortage of adequately trained and skilled operators in the region, regardless of gender, it stated. The Iron Women program has been established to address these three interconnected challenges. It aims to open the doors to employment for underprivileged women, equip them with industry-specific skills and foster a diverse workforce to meet the demands of the sector. Tomas Kuta, the Head of Sales Region Asia at Volvo CE, said: "The Iron Women Program is a powerful step towards shaping an inclusive future in our industry. It is not just about training women - it is about unlocking potential, creating opportunities, and reshaping perceptions." "This initiative reflects our commitment to building a workforce that is diverse, skilled, and future-ready," he stated. The initiative aims to fill a skills gap in the region by offering operator training for women. "The model has already been introduced in Ukraine, where women have been trained in vital skills to support rebuilding efforts at a time when unemployment and labor market gaps have been impacting the industry. Now, the program has opened in India from March, with participants already taking advantage and developing their learning," he added. The initiative in India offers three specific training programs: an operator program, a workshop technician program, and a technician program for the factory floor. Over several months, participants benefit from access to cutting-edge technology provided by Volvo CE and practical training and jobsite placements with dealer partner Pollutech Engineering and mining customer Kalinga Commercial Corporation Limited. It is an unrivalled platform to gain valuable skills from leading experts in their field and secure the required certification for real-world job opportunities, it stated. "I come from a place where women are rarely seen in such roles, but this journey has changed my life. I came here unsure of what I could do - now I leave with a skill, a voice, and the courage to dream bigger. Iron Women made me believe that no dream is too bold," said Laxmi Naik, one of the participants of the program. Empowering women in construction Dilip Tripathi, CEO of Pollutech Engineering, said: "Empowering women through skill development isn't just the right thing to do – it's the smart thing to do." "The Iron Women Program is building a new generation of trained, confident professionals who will shape the future of our industry. We are proud to be a part of this transformative journey," he stated. A workshop technician program and a technician program for the factory floor are also included.

€55,000 To Get Migrants To Go Home? Sweden Ups Golden-Handshakes To Encourage Re-Migration
A new proposal from the Swedish government would dramatically raise financial incentives for migrants to return to their countries of origin, with individuals eligible to receive up to SEK 350,000 (€32,000) and families up to SEK 600,000 (€55,000) as part of a broader effort to curb immigration and address integration challenges. Migration Minister Johan Forssell confirmed the agreement among the coalition parties and emphasized that the program would include strong oversight mechanisms, telling Swedish news agency TT that the government wants to minimize the risk of people exploiting the allowance by coming to Sweden solely to claim the payment. As reported by the Samnytt news outlet, the proposal also includes a clause requiring full repayment of the grant if the recipient returns to Sweden, regardless of the time elapsed. The remigration proposal is the latest in a series of measures aimed at reshaping Sweden's migration and integration policies. It comes amid growing public concern over violent crime, particularly gang-related violence involving individuals with migration backgrounds. Reports have highlighted a surge in homicides and increasingly brazen criminal activity in Swedish cities. Sweden now reportedly records 50 percent more homicides than El Salvador, a country once plagued by gang violence until a sweeping crackdown by President Nayib Bukele. The Swedish government has framed its remigration policy as one response to what it describes as a decline in social cohesion and the failure of decades of integration efforts.
