New school blocks a boost for SMK Wallace Bay students

The Sun10-05-2025

TAWAU: After years of studying in rundown facilities, students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Wallace Bay on Pulau Sebatik here, finally have reason to smile - two brand-new double-storey blocks, complete with 12 classrooms, an administration block and a surau, are now ready for use.
The new buildings were officially launched by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek during her two-day working visit to the Kalabakan parliamentary constituency as part of the Parliamentary Follow-Up Action Programme, which began on Thursday.
Fadhlina said the redevelopment of SMK Wallace Bay reflects the government's serious commitment to providing a comfortable and conducive learning environment for students and teachers in rural areas.
'The MADANI government is committed to expanding access to quality education. That's why we go into the interior - to ensure our children receive equal opportunities, comfort, and fairness in their education,' she said.
Earlier, she said out of 390 dilapidated schools in Sabah, 230 have already been rebuilt.
For SMK Wallace Bay principal Jumaan Mahmud, the new school buildings are more than just upgraded infrastructure - they represent renewed hope and ambition for the younger generation on Pulau Sebatik.
'This transformation shows the government's dedication to rural communities, especially here in Sebatik. SMK Wallace Bay has a long history, having first opened on Feb 4, 1974,' he said.
Jumaan said the redevelopment was part of the Ministry of Education's (MOE) initiative under the 11th Malaysia Plan in 2020, and the completed project was officially handed over by the Public Works Department on March 27 this year.
He also thanked the ministry for recognising the unique challenges faced by students on the island, including difficulties in commuting and the risk of school dropouts due to geographical barriers.
To address these issues, the government has approved the construction of a new school hostel under the 12th Malaysia Plan, with capacity for 200 students. Construction work began last year.
The hostel is expected to make a significant difference for students from remote villages such as Kampung Sungai Tongkang and Mentadak, many of whom face long and difficult journeys to attend school due to the island's terrain and limited transport options.
SMK Wallace Bay currently has more than 300 students.
During the visit, Fadhlina also announced an additional allocation of RM200,000 to upgrade essential facilities at SMK Wallace Bay, including the science lab and canteen.
She also visited SMK Mentadak Baru, also located on Pulau Sebalik and Kampung Serudung Laut, Kalabakan, accompanied by MOE officials and Kalabakan MP Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy.

Education Ministry pledges swift aid after Cheras school fire, awaiting full report

NIBONG TEBAL, June 10 — The Education Ministry (MOE) is awaiting a full report on the fire that broke out earliy this morning at Sekolah Menengah (SM) Sains Alam Shah in Cheras. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim has been tasked with assessing the extent of the damage and delivering immediate assistance to the school. 'This support is crucial to ensure that the teaching and learning can continue in a safe and conducive environment for both students and teachers,' she said. She was speaking to reporters after attending a welcoming ceremony for new Form Six students at Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) Engineering Campus here. She expressed sorrow over the incident and relief that there were no casualties, adding that the safety and welfare of teachers and students remain the ministry's top priority. Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Operations Centre confirmed that the school's administration building was destroyed in the blaze. Authorities received an emergency call at 4.15 am and extinguished the fire by 6.18 am. Separately, Fadhlina addressed concerns among teachers posted far from their spouses due to differing work locations. She said teachers may apply for transfers after two years of service without additional conditions, an improvement from the previous requirement of at least three years and other stipulations. 'However, we must also take into account factors that could affect the education ecosystem, such as staffing vacancies,' she said. 'Our priority is to balance the needs of the education system with the personal well-being of teachers. Health and safety concerns are also valid reasons for transfer requests. We will manage this as best we can and we ask for teachers' patience,' she added. — Bernama

Guy goes viral for using A5 Miyazaki to cook rendang: Netizens think it was a bad idea

WHEN Wagyu is being mentioned, we expect a handsome steak pan-fried and cooked in a stew made from its own, liquified fat. Sounds mouthwatering and it is. However, an influencer recently decided that Wagyu be used to make rendang instead, or more accurately, the high grade A5 Miyazaki. Surely, the use of premium meat to make a timeless village cuisine would be a good idea? The man used tenderloins for his cooking, adding that one kilo of the A5 Miyazaki was RM1,600 above. He got it at a 50% discount from a good friend, ending up with four kilos of premium meat at RM4,000, claiming that it was very cheap. According to him at the end of the video, the meal was very delicious. He further said, 'Money cannot buy happiness, but money can buy wagyu.' But if he was expecting some praise for his cooking prowess, he was sorely mistaken. The smell of roasting is in the air and it is not A5 Miyazaki. Ini rendang T20 ni. Beli wagyu A5 miyazaki 4 kilo untuk buat rendang je. Anggaran dalam RM4 ribu lebih. Just wonder macam mana rasa dia adakah lagi sedap or macam mana? Baca komen dekat tiktok kata daging ni tak sesuai buat rendang 😢 — kamaghul deghaman (@kamaghul) June 8, 2025 Netizen @juliahjohan opened fire by stating in the comment section of the post that expensive doesn't mean better for everything. 'Only the most foolish people use A5 Miyazaki for rendang,' said another netizen. But why is that? Perhaps netizen @kentangCheeze knew the answer. 'People do not eat Wagyu with something heavy like coconut in the rendang. The way it is cooked in the rendang will break the fat marbling in the wagyu, so when the rendang is cooked, the meat becomes chewy and dry,' said @kentangCheeze. @mewohbenor added that even with the normal meat, people do not use the tenderloin to make rendang. 'The softest part of the meat is not suitable for use in cooking rendang,' he pointed out. To better elucidate the foolishness of using wagyu in rendang, another netizen claimed it was like using Musang King to make tempoyak. However, @lelaki8823515 claimed that it was alright to use premium meat for the dish, just that the meat needs to be separated from it. Once completed, the meat can then be sliced. 'When you want to eat it, then add the gravy with the meat,' he said. —June 9, 2025 Main image: @kamaghul

Sombre atmosphere at hospital as families mourn bus accident victims

IPOH: A sombre atmosphere enveloped the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital mortuary as family members gathered to mourn those who perished in the tragic accident on the East-West Highway. With each passing truck bringing the remains of their loved ones, cries and wails were heard as some family members sobbed uncontrollably. Media personnel were not allowed within the mortuary compound and could only witness the scene from a distance. Fourteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and one bus attendant were killed in the accident on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, on Monday (June 9) at about 1am. The bus carrying 42 students overturned while another car with four occupants veered into a ditch. Mohd Alif Nasnawi, 21, said he had tried to contact two friends who were on the bus since early morning. The agricultural science students said his friends, Muhd Adib Hazim Halim and Norayuni Maslan, both 21 and from Terengganu, were supposed to arrive at their campus at about 5am. "After hearing about the accident, I tried calling their mobile phones numerous times, but there was no answer. I was anxious, and my heart broke when I heard the devastating news that they didn't make it," he said. "I last spoke to Adib on Friday. I had asked him about buying a shirt for one of our courses. He's usually quiet, only speaking when necessary," he added. Alif said it is common for university students, especially those from Kelantan and Terengganu, to charter buses when returning to campus. "It's normal, especially after holidays," he added. When met by reporters, Saarani said support would be available for the affected families. "I believe this tragedy will leave a lasting impact on them," he said. UPSI has counselling services available, and I hope they find some comfort and strength in accepting this as part of Allah's will," he added. Saarani also said that the state government would allocate RM1,000 to each affected family. "The financial aid is small, but we hope it helps cover basic needs, such as accommodation, food, or other expenses. "We know not every family is financially well-off, and this is the least we can do to ease their burden," he said, thanking the police for ensuring the victims' remains would be returned to their respective homes. "That's all from me," he said quietly, his voice heavy with emotion.
