IPL 2025 Final: Phil Salt's gravity-defying catch turns the tide for RCB
Phil Salt
Royal Challengers Bengaluru found their opening in the IPL 2025 Final thanks to a moment of fielding brilliance from Phil Salt, who took a sensational boundary-line catch to dismiss Priyansh Arya in the final over of the powerplay.

With Punjab Kings off to a brisk start chasing 191, Arya looked in control, striking four boundaries in a 19-ball 24. But just as he looked to push the tempo,
Josh Hazlewood
tempted him with a short-of-length delivery aimed at the body. Arya tried to pull it over deep backward square leg — only to find Salt patrolling that very region.
What followed was a masterclass in boundary awareness. Running to his right near the rope, Salt held on to the catch at full pace but realised his momentum would carry him over.
In a split-second decision, he lobbed the ball further to his right, stepped over the rope, re-entered the field of play, and completed the catch with composure and precision.

It was a moment that shifted the energy inside the packed Narendra Modi Stadium, with 90,871 fans witnessing one of the cleanest pieces of fielding in a high-pressure final. Salt, fielding in the deep and not donning the gloves for RCB, showcased elite athleticism and presence of mind. RCB, defending 190/9 in their maiden title bid, needed a spark and Salt delivered just that.
At the end of the powerplay, PBKS were 52/1 — still in the chase, but RCB had found their spark thanks to Salt and Hazlewood's sharp execution.

RCB announce ₹10 lakh financial aid for victory parade stampede victims
Royal Challengers Bengaluru announced financial support of ₹10 lakh each for the families of the 11 fans who lost their lives in a tragic stampede during the team's victory celebrations in Bengaluru on Wednesday, after winning the IPL 2025. The incident occurred outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, where an overwhelming turnout of lakhs gathered to celebrate with the players. What began as a joyous occasion quickly spiralled into panic, as crowd control measures failed under the pressure of sheer numbers. Over 50 people were injured in the stampede. In response, RCB also introduced an initiative called 'RCB Cares' to assist those hurt in the incident. While the city celebrated a historic win, the tragedy has cast a heavy shadow over the jubilant scenes. RCB Responds with Financial Support The franchise expressed deep sorrow in a statement issued the day after the incident, saying the loss of lives has brought immense grief to the entire RCB family. To honour the deceased and assist their families, the team confirmed that each of the 11 affected households would receive ₹10 lakh in compensation. Additionally, RCB announced the creation of 'RCB Cares', a fund that will extend help to injured supporters. Massive Crowds Turned Deadly According to local authorities, over 2 to 3 lakh people converged near the stadium, far beyond the expected turnout. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed 11 deaths and more than 30 injuries. He noted that most of the victims were young, and said the government, too, would extend ₹10 lakh in aid to the bereaved families. Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar said the crowd was impossible to manage, forcing them to cancel a planned victory procession. BCCI, IPL Officials Call for Accountability BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia called the incident 'deeply unfortunate' and suggested the organisers had underestimated the scale. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal echoed the sentiment, describing the tragedy as shocking and demanding a thorough inquiry by local authorities.
