Chhaya Kadam faces forest department probe after saying she ate meat of protected animals like monitor lizard, porcupine

Hindustan Times01-05-2025

All We Imagine As Light actor Chhaya Kadam has come under scrutiny of the forest department after a Mumbai-based group, Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), complained about her allegedly consuming wildlife meat. A Free Press Journal report states that that the actor will be called in for an investigation soon. (Also Read: Chhaya Kadam reveals she was 'disappointed' on Jhund sets, recalls Amitabh Bachchan helped her: He's still macho man…)
Roshan Rathod, Divisional Forest Officer (Vigilance), confirmed to the publication that they have received a complaint, which was forwarded to the Chief Conservator of Forests to the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) for inquiry. He also confirmed that Chhaya will be 'called in for investigation soon'.
Rakesh Bhoir, the investigating officer in the case, told the publication, 'We got in touch with Kadam over the phone, where she informed us that she is out of town for a professional trip and will return only after four days. She has informed her of she seeking a legal advice and appearing before us for the investigation.'
The report states that Chhaya admitted in a video interview to a radio channel to having allegedly consumed wildlife meat. Another officer, on the condition of anonymity, told the publication that poachers in the area will be tracked down based on the information she gave in the interview.
In their complaint, PAWS reportedly wrote that they came across an interview of Chhaya with Mirchi Marathi, in which 'she claimed to have eaten meat of protected wildlife species such as mouse deer, rabbits, wild boar, monitor lizard, and porcupine.' Because this sends a 'wrong message to the public' and is an offence under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the group requested that the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, also be applied and that legal action be taken against her and others involved.
Sunish Subramanian Kunju, Honorary Wildlife Warden and founder of OIPA, AMMA Care Foundation, and PAWS-Mumbai, who sent the letter, described it as 'shocking' to see a public figure openly admit to consuming meat from protected animals.

Two mules in digital arrest case caught, police recover ₹10 lakh of ₹4.7 crore

Following the digital arrest case of a 75-year-old retired engineer, the South-East cyber crime police arrested two men, including an industrialist from Hyderabad, who allegedly received the money in their bank accounts. The police also exposed the link of a casino in Sri Lanka to the cyber fraud which is being probed in detail. The accused according to the police trapped the victim, posing as CBI and ED officials, and threatened to book him for money laundering three months ago, and forced him to pay ₹4.7 crore over a period of time. The accused even forced him to share property documents which they tried to use as collateral to get personal loans. The police, based on a tip-off from their Chennai counterparts, approached the victim, who was not aware of the scam and was transferring the money to different accounts. He had recently transferred ₹10 lakh to the account belonging to the driver of Ishwar Singh, a Hyderabad-based businessman. Based on the information, a police team tracked down Ishwar Singh who confessed that he had gone to Sri Lanka to gamble in the casino with ₹25 lakh. After losing ₹15 lakh, he returned to Hyderabad and asked for a refund for the rest of the money from the accused in the casino. The accused asked the victim posing as CBI officials to transfer the money to Ishwar. 'He was unaware that the money he received is part of a cyber crime,' a police officer said, adding that the money has been seized and returned to the victim. Meanwhile, the police also detained Ramnarayana Choudhary, an industrialist from Hyderabad, whose account the accused had used to transfer the money. The police found that Choudhary received ₹1.8 crore in his account which was later transferred to different accounts in Guntur and Vishakhapatnam. The police said that both Choudhary and Singh were unaware that the money they had received in their accounts belonged to cyber crime. The police have warned people not to share their bank accounts with anyone, while a probe is on to track down the accused and expose the links of cyber frauds and casino in Sri Lanka, said Sarah Fathima, DCP (South-East division).

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's son visits India to meet her

New Delhi: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina's US-based son, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, is in India to meet his mother, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Wazed, who has emerged as a key voice for the Awami League party, arrived in the country ahead of Eid-ul-Adha in order to celebrate the festival with his mother, currently living in self-exile in New Delhi, the people said on condition of anonymity. Hasina fled to India after the dramatic collapse of the Awami League government in the face of nationwide protests led by student groups last August. She is currently living in a safe house in the heart of the Indian capital. There was no word from Indian officials on the visit by Wazed, an American citizen who is also known by his nickname of Joy. 'Hasina's son is visiting India primarily to celebrate Eid with his mother. He is the first visitor she has received since she arrived in India in August last year,' a person close to the Awami League said. The people said there are currently no plans for Wazed to participate in any public events. Details of his itinerary too are not known, they said. The Indian side is yet to respond to a request from Bangladesh's interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to extradite Hasina, who is facing charges in multiple criminal cases registered against her. Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal indicted Hasina earlier this month for ordering a police crackdown on protestors last year, and directed authorities to present her before the panel on June 16. Relations between the Indian government and Bangladesh's caretaker administration are currently at an all-time low and the two sides have clashed on Dhaka's handling of the repression on Bangladesh's religious minorities.

Fourth arrest in Rs 10cr ambergris case exposes interstate smuggling network

Margao: Sanguem police arrested a fourth person in connection with last week's seizure of ambergris worth Rs 10 crore, further cementing their suspicions that the illegal whale vomit trade involves a sophisticated interstate smuggling syndicate. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sachin Mhatre, a resident of Pen, Raigad, was apprehended by a special police team and brought to Goa for questioning. The arrest follows the June 6 seizure at Dabamol village in Sanguem, where three men—Sainath Shet from Ponda, Ratuakant Karapurkar from Zuarinagar, and Vegesh Redkar from Sawantwadi—were caught with nearly 6kg of the banned substance. 'A team was sent to Mumbai after interrogation of the three accused arrested earlier. The team succeeded in locating him in Pen, and he was brought to Goa,' said Sanguem PI Ditendra Naik. The investigation revealed that Vegesh Redkar, one of the three men initially arrested, sourced the ambergris from Mhatre. 'His custodial interrogation will reveal further links,' Naik told TOI , confirming that this was indeed an interstate operation. 'There are likely to be more arrests. We will try to get to the bottom of the case and bust the illegal trade.' The Raigad connection validates police suspicions about the organised nature of the smuggling ring. Nevertheless, choosing the remote Dabamol village as a transaction point continues to puzzle the police. This case bears striking similarities to previous ambergris seizures in the region, including the Feb 2024 case where Konkan railway police arrested two Kerala residents with 6kg of whale vomit worth Rs 5.6 crore at Margao railway station. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police are examining possible connections between these cases and the 2020 Sawantwadi incident involving three Goans. Ambergris, produced in sperm whale digestive systems, commands premium prices in international perfume markets despite being banned under India's Wildlife Protection Act 1972. The substance's rarity and commercial value continue to attract smugglers willing to risk severe legal consequences. All four accused face charges under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, including illegal possession and trading of protected marine mammal derivatives.
