Woman nearly drowns as car sinks in Sungai Kelantan river on ferry
PETALING JAYA: A woman in her 50s nearly drowned after the car she was in plunged into the Sungai Kelantan while crossing the ferry from Pasir Kelang to Pasir Era in Kuala Krai, yesterday.
It is believed that during 10.30am incident, the Proton Saga FLX's gear was left in neutral (N), despite the driver, who is the victim's husband, having engaged the handbrake, Sinar Harian reported.
'Coincidentally, the ferry was just about to depart, and theirs was the only car on board.
'According to the man (the husband), the car started moving despite the handbrake being applied.
'It is believed to have moved after his wife's hand accidentally hit the gear, causing it to shift from N to drive (D),' Haikal Ridzuan, 25, a ferry worker, told the media.
He said he suddenly heard cries for help and saw the man being assisted by several other passengers, trying to hold and stop the car from sinking further.
Haikal added that although they were unable to stop the car from submerging, they managed to open the door and pull the woman out even though the vehicle was already halfway into the river.
'It crossed my mind to grab the ferry rope and tie it to part of the car to prevent it from drifting away and sinking.
'Thank God, it worked, and the car was successfully pulled back onto land with the help of a passerby's pickup truck.'
However, the incident caused the ferry operation to be delayed for nearly two hours, he said.

The deceased were the second, third, fourth, and fifth children among six siblings. Also killed was Nur Arfiqah's husband, Mohamad Ikmal Ishak, 26, who was driving the vehicle. Zaini mentioned that her children had not visited their uncle's house in Jerantut for a long time, and this visit was the first after a long period. "They went there because my brother was hosting a sacrificial feast. Other relatives, including my youngest child, left a day earlier, on Thursday, using two other vehicles," she said. According to Zaini, the last time she saw all her children was on Tuesday before the incident. She said they gathered and packed their belongings to stay at Nur Arfiqah's residence in Tambun before leaving for Jerantut around 5 p.m. on Friday. "I saw they were all cheerful the last time we met. Only the children's friends had much to tell. "They said my son (Mohammad Zulkifli) managed to treat 10 of his housemates to packed meals," she said. She received news of the accident through a call from a neighbour who informed her that her children were involved in an accident. "The neighbour called, saying the children had an accident, but didn't mention about their deaths. It was much later that we found out that all of them were gone," she explained. Despite the difficulty in accepting the reality, Zaini and her husband remained strong and resigned to face this great loss. She said they are now left with only two children, the eldest (a son) and the youngest (a daughter). "What can I say... I am resigned," she said, holding back tears. The bodies of all the victims will be prayed over at Masjid Jamek Bota Kanan and buried at the Islamic Cemetery of Kampung Selat, Bota Kanan on Saturday (June 7).

Three Jitra students killed in accident on NSE
ALOR SETAR: A day that was supposed to bring joy in anticipation of Hari Raya Aidiladha turned into a tragedy when three students from the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) in Jitra were killed in an accident at KM49.4 of the North-South Expressway, heading south from Alor Setar, on Thursday (June 5), Sinar Harian reports. The Malay language daily reported that in the 2,10pm incident, all the victims were on two motorcycles, travelling back to their respective hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha. All the victims, aged 19, are believed to have collided with an multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) before the fatal accident occurred. The deceased have been identified as Muhamad Habil Mohd Sobri from Gurun; Muhammad Fahmi Jam from Jeniang, Sik; and Muhamad Arif Aifan Derani from Bukit Selambau, Sungai Petani. Another friend sustained serious injuries due to the collision. Sinar Harian reported that the bodies of all three victims have been sent to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) here for further action. The driver of the car has also been detained to assist in the investigation regarding the fatal accident. Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Siti Noor Salawati Saad told Sinar Harian that initial investigations revealed the accident occurred when a motorcycle lost control and crashed into the rear of the car, which had stopped in the emergency lane. At the same time, another motorcycle, coming from behind, failed to avoid the collision and hit the motorcycle in front, resulting in a serious crash. "As a result of the incident, two riders and a pillion rider died at the scene. "Another passenger was seriously injured and is now receiving treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB)," ACP Siti Noor Salawati said in a statement Thursday afternoon. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani granted a six-day remand order for the two male suspects, aged 37 and 26 years old, respectively, following an application by the Melaka Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) branch Wednesday. According to sources, the two suspects were arrested between 6.25pm and 6.30pm on Tuesday (June 3) while giving statements at the Melaka MACC office. Meanwhile, Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrests when contacted and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting and accepting bribes. - Bernama
