India has the opportunity to become a net exporter of sustainable aviation fuel as efforts continue to
decarbonise aviation
globally, a top
Boeing
executive said on Thursday and highlighted the ample availability of feedstock, including agricultural waste, for producing the fuel.
Aviation accounts for around 2-3 per cent of the global carbon emissions, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can help in reducing these emissions.
At industry body CII's Annual Business Summit 2025 in the national capital, Boeing India and South Asia President Salil Gupte also said that 2,500 civil aircraft will be coming into India over the next 20 years.
India is one of the world's fastest growing civil aviation markets and Indian airlines have placed orders for more than 1,000 aeroplanes over the past few years.
While mentioning that the country will have a newer and younger aircraft fleet in the coming years that will also help in decarbonisation, Gupte also said it can be looked at how India can play a role in industrialisation of
biofuels for aviation
.
The barrier for SAF is not going to be aeroplane technology or engineering technology but the supply factor and how the fuel can be made more economical, he noted.
Currently, SAF costs 2.5 to 3.5 times more than
Aviation Turbine Fuel
(ATF).
If the world is to reach the net zero goal for aviation by 2050, it needs to have 185 million tonnes of SAF per year. India's feedstock, whether it is used cooking oil, agricultural waste or the like, will be able to make 8-10 million tonnes of SAF per year.
"This means that India can actually provide over 5 per cent of the world's SAF requirements... India can be an exporter of SAF. This creates an opportunity. This means India can help decarbonise the civil
aviation industry
," Gupte said and added that turning agricultural waste into SAF will be a tremendous opportunity.
Boeing, a leading aircraft maker, has a significant presence in India.

25 rare M F Husain paintings to go under hammer after Bombay High Court nod
Twenty five rare paintings of late Indian modernist painter M F Husain, secured by NAFED as part of the proceeds of an alleged loan default case, will be auctioned on June 12 pursuant to a nod from the Bombay High Court . The auction titled, 'M F Husain: An Artist's Vision of the XX Century', includes 25 canvases painted as part of Husain's OPCE - Our Planet Called Earth - series. In its February 17 order, a single bench of Justice R I Chagla permitted the Sheriff of Mumbai to auction the 25 paintings, secured by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) in connection with the Rs 236 crore loan dispute with industrialist Guru Swarup Srivastava's Swarup Group of Industries. Srivastava came into limelight in 2007 when he commissioned 100 paintings of M F Husain at Rs 1 crore each. In May last year, art specialist Dadiba Pundole submitted to the HC the valuation report of the paintings, as per which they were valued at Rs 25 crore. Live Events Pursuant to the HC order, the Sheriff of Mumbai in February issued an auction notice for the paintings through Pundole art gallery. The auction is scheduled on June 12 at the Hamilton House in south Mumbai. After the auction is complete, the Sheriff of Mumbai has been directed to file a report to the high court by July 3 and obtain final directions for handover of the works. In 2006, the CBI initiated a probe into the Swarup Group and against Srivastava for alleged misappropriation of Rs 150 crore from the Rs 236 crore loans from NAFED. A tribunal in December 2008 permitted NAFED to secure assets of Rs 100 crore, including the Husain paintings.

China has imposed control on rare earth magnets which has created several challenges for Indian automobile companies. Existing stocks are expected to last only until early June, it can create serious problems and disruptions in the vehicle production industry. Indian automobile manufacturers are getting delays in the supply of rare earth magnets. After China's major export regulations there was a delay in shipment for these components. Manufacturers have already warned that if supplies do not go normal then it can impact vehicle production. According to a media report, to address this issue, a delegation from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) is preparing to travel to China to talk with Chinese officials. The Indian government is also trying to resolve the matter diplomatically. Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are important for electric and conventional vehicles. These magnets are used in systems of motors and steering, brakes, wipers, and audio equipment. Even a minor shortage of these magnets affects assembly lines. China's Hold On Earth Magnets 90% of the world's rare earth magnets are produced by China. China asked exporters to take government licenses and detailed end-use certificates from buyers before shipping. Due to these new rules the approval process has slowed down. According to the Economic Times , many consignments for India are stuck at Chinese ports after this rule. However many European companies could get export approvals, but Indian goods are stuck in the country. India imported 460 tons of rare earth magnets from China in the last fiscal year. Now India does not have any other option which can support countries' production lines.
