From global glory to supremacy in free-kicks, Lionel Messi eyes one last record before retirement

India.com5 hours ago

Argentine football legend, Lionel Messi, turned 38 on June 24. Another historic milestone recorded in his years of achievements. Whether it is a scintillating dribble or a game winning strike, Messi has established a legacy that keeps on inspiring good as he challenges the clock with his continued excellence in the field.
During the beginning of his international career, Messi was strongly criticized about failure to bring Argentina major trophies. Nevertheless, he shut his critics when he helped the national team to win the Copa America two times, FIFA World Cup, and a Finalissima, booking a solid place as one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game.
In 2021, Messi moved to Paris saint germain after a glorious career at FC Barcelona. After spending time in France, he transferred with big noise to Inter Miami. As it stands now, he is still impressing as he features in the Club World Cup with the American team.
At the age of 38, Messi has remained to produce accomplishments similar to which younger players could only dream of. His striking free-kick goal against FC Porto recently to earn Inter Miami a 2-1 Club World Cup win has shown that his magic has not still died down.
However, since 2018 Messi has scored 34 times directly with free-kicks compared to 33 times in penalty situations. Overall, he has scored 68 free-kick goals, which he ranks third in career history behind Pele and Juninho Pernambucano (70 and 77 respectively).
Lionel Messi is on the verge of creating history as he might become the highest free-kick scorer of all time, given his current tempo. Although speculations indicate that he might step aside after the 2026 World Cup FIFA, his exceptional competence in physical fitness creates an impression that he might be playing years ahead.
Lionel Messi will face his former club and current European champions PSG on Sunday, June 29 at the Round of 16 clash of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana announced his retirement from football on Wednesday. 'As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride,' he said through a post on his Instagram account. Lallana made more than 300 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 33 goals and assisting 34 times. Having joined the Southampton academy as a teenager, Lallana rose through the ranks and even helped the Saints gain consecutive promotions to climb to the Premier League. The player also went on to skipper the side before he joined Liverpool in 2014. With the Merseyside team, he lifted the Premier League title at the end of 2019-20 season. Ahead of the 2024-25 season, he returned to Southampton on a one-year contract. With the Three Lions, Lallana made his international debut in November 2013 and was part of the England squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Auckland, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament and already eliminated after two heavy defeats - a 6-0 thumping by Benfica and a 10-0 demolition by German giants Bayern Munich, produced a defiant display to deny Argentina's six-time Copa Libertadores winners a spot in the knockout stages. Boca needed a win to stand a chance of progressing. Despite being out-shot 40 to 4 and conceding nearly 70% possession, Auckland's grit and determination paid off. Stats of Auckland City vs Boca Juniors 1 - 1 (Goals) 0.19 - 2.38 (xG) 3 - 40 (Shots) 2 - 9 (Shots on Target) 26% - 74% (Possession) To put the scale of the upset into perspective, this was the equivalent of Scottish third-tier side Cove Rangers (ranked 4,844th) drawing with Juventus (ranked 25th), as per Opta. Boca went ahead in the 26th minute after Lautaro Di Lollo's header hit the post and ricocheted in off Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow for an unfortunate own goal. Auckland stuns Boca, Chelsea progresses at Club World Cup

New York, June 25 (UNI) Benfica secured top spot in Group C at the FIFA Club World Cup with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, as Chelsea advanced from Group D and Auckland City stunned Boca Juniors with a 1-1 draw. Flamengo, already assured of a place in the last 16, drew 1-1 with Los Angeles FC in Orlando. In Charlotte, an early goal from Norway international forward Andreas Schjelderup inflicted Bayern's first blemish of the tournament. Schjelderup timed his run to perfection to sweep home a first-time effort from 12 yards after compatriot Fredrik Aursnes crossed from the right wing. Bayern enjoyed almost three quarters of the total possession but rarely threatened against a disciplined and compact Benfica defense. The result left the Lisbon-based club a point ahead of the Bundesliga champions, who also advanced to the tournament's next stage. "I think this was a very fair and important win, historic really," Benfica manager Bruno Lage said. "We were as straightforward and assertive as we should be and I think we were very effective in delivering our strategy." Benfica will meet Chelsea in Charlotte on Saturday while Bayern Munich faces Flamengo in Miami the next day. In Nashville, Christian Gray struck a second-half equalizer as Auckland City clinched its first point of the tournament against Boca Juniors. The Argentine outfit went ahead when Lautaro Di Lollo's header from a corner hit the left post before ricochetting in off goalkeeper Nathan Garrow. But Gray equalized by latching onto a Jerson Lagos corner with a low header beyond Agustin Marchesin. Garrow repeatedly denied Boca with a series of sharp saves as the semi-professional team from New Zealand bowed out on an encouraging note. Boca finished third in Group C, joining fourth-placed Auckland City in exiting the competition. "I'm from a small town, a long way from here and a lot different to this environment. So it is somewhat of a dream," Gray said after the match, explaining that he would go back to his job as a school teacher upon returning to New Zealand. "We've had some tough results, but I'm just happy for the team and the boys. I think we deserve it," the 28 year-old added. In Philadelphia, Chelsea secured its passage to the knockout phase with a 3-0 victory over Tunisia's Esperance in Group D. Tosin Adarabioyo opened the scoring with a looping header into the far corner after Enzo Fernandez's floating free-kick. Argentina international midfielder Fernandez was again the provider as his lofted pass released Liam Delap, who shook off two defenders before calmly slotting a low finish past goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said. The Premier League side made it 3-0 in second-half stoppage time when Tyrique George's long-range shot slipped through Ben Said's gloves and rolled into the back of the net. The result meant Chelsea finished second in Group D with six points, three ahead of the eliminated Esperance. In Wednesday's other fixture, a late Wallace Yan strike earned Flamengo a 1-1 draw with Los Angeles FC in Orlando. Denis Bouanga broke the deadlock against the run of play when he ran onto Timothy Tillman's long free-kick before nutmegging goalkeeper Agustin Rossi with a composed finish. Wallace leveled two minutes later for the Brazilian club as he bulldozed his way into the box after Jorginho's pass and lashed low past Hugo Lloris. Despite the result, Flamengo topped Group D with seven points while Los Angeles - which entered the match without hope of progressing - finished last, six points further back. UNI/XINHUA BM
