ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Yazidis brought bread and yogurt to the holy Lalish Temple as part of the centuries-old Sefra Nan u Mast tradition ahead of their new year.
'This is the path of our ancestors. Our forefathers preserved this and we are obligated to preserve this path like them. A person is known by their nature. No matter what happens, one should not abandon the traditions of their ancestors. One must follow in the footsteps of their forefathers,' Nafia Asfar, a Yazidi woman taking part in the ceremony, told Rudaw on Saturday.
The Yazidi faithful carrying offerings of bread (nan) and yogurt (mast) were met by the religious leader Baba Chawish.
The yogurt offerings are handed over to Nala Faqiri, the temple caretaker, and a portion is used to prepare dough. This is done by mixing it with water drawn from the sacred Zamzam and Kaniya Spi springs, which hold significance in Yazidi traditions.
The bread is placed in a designated sacred area within the temple. As part of the ritual, a portion of the bread is ceremonially sprinkled with water.
'It's very nice that all the villagers gather together and we pray for ourselves. God willing, may it be a year of goodness and happiness,' said Zawra Mirza, another Yazidi woman participating in the ritual.
The ceremony concludes with traditional dancing. These ancient practices passed down through generations reflect the enduring cultural and spiritual heritage of the Yazidi people.
The Yazidis have endured years of suffering under the Islamic State (ISIS), losing many loved ones to the group's violent acts. ISIS militants abducted more than 6,000 Yazidis, mainly young women and children, when in 2014 they seized control of Shingal in northern Iraq. The fate of 2,832 of them remains unknown, according to the most recent statistics from the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
The office has also documented 93 mass graves of Yazidis who were killed by ISIS militants between 2014 and 2017.

Iran dismantles ISIS-linked operatives in Tehran

Al-Hol Camp's future: Iraq to convene Geneva conference
Shafaq News/ The Iraqi government is set to host a conference in Geneva this September regarding Syria's Al-Hol camp, National Security Advisor (NSA) Qasim Al-Araji announced on Tuesday during his meeting with US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Steven Fagin in Baghdad. According to a statement from the NSA, Al-Araji confirmed that the Geneva conference will focus on returning camp residents to their countries of origin. He also reiterated Iraq's support for a negotiated agreement between Iran and the United States through dialogue. Since 2021, the Iraqi government—working alongside international organizations—has begun repatriating Iraqi families from Al-Hol to Iraq, where they are received at the Jadaa camp for psychological and social rehabilitation. However, the process has faced repeated objections, particularly from families of ISIS victims in Nineveh who fear the return of these individuals to their communities. For his part, Fagin praised the Iraqi government's proactive role in managing both internal and external challenges, the statement noted. Both sides discussed recent regional and international developments and reaffirmed their support for stability in Syria. They also stressed the need to activate the Strategic Framework Agreement signed between Iraq and the United States and to promote investment in Iraq, affirming that the Inherent Resolve mission (the US military's operational name for the global war against ISIS) would proceed according to the agreed timeline between the Iraqi government and the International Coalition.

KRG's Amnesty Law draft held up by political deadlock
Shafaq News/ The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has finalized a draft of the General Amnesty Law, but its passage remains on hold until the new session of the Kurdistan Parliament convenes, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Kwestan Maarouf said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, Maarouf explained that the previous KRG cabinet had prepared the bill and that ten members of the former Parliament had also submitted a related legislative proposal. However, political disagreements and the dissolution of the previous Parliament stalled the process. 'Despite holding an initial meeting with relevant government bodies, the Parliament failed to convene for a vote in its final year, and was later dissolved,' she said. Maarouf noted that the new Parliament can combine both the cabinet's draft and the MPs' proposal into a single, unified Amnesty Law. About the Law Kurdistan Region's Amnesty Law, enacted in December 2017 under Law No. 4, allowed for pardons for prisoners and detainees under specific conditions, including reconciliation between involved parties or partial sentence completion. The law excluded serious offenses such as terrorism-related crimes, threats to regional security, corruption, premeditated murder, incest, sexual assault, human trafficking, antiquities smuggling, currency counterfeiting, and kidnapping resulting in death, permanent disability, or disappearance.
