Perhilitan expects elephant sanctuary in Gerik to be operational by 2030
IPOH: The Perak Elephant Sanctuary at Jalan Raya Timur-Barat (JRTB) is expected to be completed by 2030, said Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Yusoff Shariff.
He said the RM40 million project had been submitted to the Economy Ministry on May 6 and the decision on its construction falls entirely under the jurisdiction of the Federal government.
'If everything goes smoothly, I think this sanctuary can operate as early as in 2028, but for (the infrastructure facility) to be fully completed, perhaps 2030 is a more realistic target.
'With the availability of such a facility, it will reduce human-elephant conflicts at JRTB by about 50 to 50 per cent,' he said when contacted by Bernama.
Bernama reported on July 18, 2020, that the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources announced the development of the Perak Elephant Sanctuary (PES) at Batu 11, JRTB in Gerik.
Based on Perhilitan's records, 4,919 complaints of human-elephant conflicts were reported between 2020 and 2024, with property loss estimated at RM39.4 million.
On the effectiveness of a wildlife crossing at the JRTB, Yusoff said the 200-metre crossing, also known as a viaduct that was built for RM26 million in 2015, proved helpful but does not guarantee the safety of elephants that inhabited the area along the route.
He added that this was because the crossing was built at Kilometre 157 of the JRTB and only used by the elephants that inhabit that specific area.
'The viaduct only helps on a small scale and is only used by animals inhabiting that area. So, we feel that the setting up of a sanctuary will provide greater safety assurance for both road users and elephants at the JRTB,' he said.
He also did not rule out the possibility of building more wildlife crossings along the JRTB if there is a specific allocation for it.

'We've also received approval from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to perform the Aidiladha prayers at the carnival site, followed by a communal feast featuring Beriani Daging Lembu Sado as the main dish,' he added.

City Mosques Gearing Up For Aidiladha Sacrificial Ritual
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- As worshippers flock home for Hari Raya Aidiladha, which falls tomorrow, mosque management teams across the capital are gearing up for the sacrificial ritual. Every detail, from logistics to personnel involved, is thoroughly examined to ensure the ritual is carried out smoothly and in compliance with religious requirements. Imam of Masjid Negara (National Mosque) Mohd Nadzri Mustakim said that they prioritise the health of staff members involved in the process to ensure a smooth and safe slaughter ritual. '…we designate spots to carry out the slaughtering, maintain the tools, obtain permits for cattle and goats, and clean the surrounding areas. The main prayer hall has also been prepared to accommodate the congregants,' he told Bernama. Mohd Nadzri stated that the management strives to adhere to the standard operating procedures set by the religious authorities, including the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). He said the sacrificial ritual at Masjid Negara will be carried out over two days, with 19 goats and sheep to be slaughtered after the special prayer tomorrow, while 10 cattle will be sacrificed on Sunday starting at 8 am. Masjid Amru Ibni Al-'As in Bandar Baru Sentul, near here, is set to slaughter 10 cattle, specially ordered from Kelantan, according to its Imam, Zulfahmi Samsudin. He said the mosque management has set up teams to ensure the smooth running of the sacrificial ritual, including a technical team in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and other agencies. He added that the mosque will host a feast tonight to celebrate congregants observing the fast in conjunction with Wukuf Day.

Aidiladha: Penang JPV issues 1,056 outside slaughter permits this year
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Veterinary Services Department (JPV) has issued 1,056 Permit Sembelihan Luar (PSL), which are permits to slaughter animals outside an approved slaughterhouse, throughout the state in conjunction with this year's Hari Raya Aidiladha, Its director, Dr. Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab, said that the PSL application which started on May 21 and ended yesterday was due to the festival and sacrificial worship tomorrow (June 7). 'The PSL involves a total number of animals to be sacrificed, namely 3,363 cows, 19 buffaloes, 777 goats, 56 sheep, and five camels in five districts in Penang,' she said when contacted by Bernama today. She also said that the permission was granted under the Animals (Control of Slaughter) Rules 2009, and therefore the Penang JPV reminds all parties involved in the implementation of the sacrificial ritual to always comply with all the provisions of the law. Saira Banu said that the important things that need to be adhered to include all outdoor slaughtering must have a valid permit from the state JPV, the slaughtering process must be carried out in a clean area, have good drainage facilities, and does not disturb public order. Muslims in Malaysia will celebrate Aidiladha tomorrow.
