Punjab has been reeling under an intense heatwave for the past four days — a period when the state typically expects pre-monsoon showers.
On Thursday, the maximum temperature was 4.9°C above normal. The highest maximum temperature in the state was 46.8°C, recorded in Bathinda on Thursday and notch lower that Wednesday's 47.6°C. Heatwave conditions were also reported in Amritsar and Ludhiana with extreme warm nights in both places. The minimum temperature across the state was also 3.4°C above normal.
Between April and May this year, the state witnessed around half a dozen heatwave days. But it seems June alone will match or surpass the number, as heatwave-like conditions are expected to continue till June 14, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) predictions.
A heatwave is declared when temperatures exceed specific thresholds. In Punjab, this typically means a departure of 4.5°C to 6.4°C from the normal maximum daytime temperature, or maximum temperatures exceeding 45°C. A severe heatwave is declared when the temperature deviation is 6.5°C or more, or when maximum temperatures touch or exceed 47°C.
For warm nights, the criteria include a departure of 4.5°C to 6.4°C above the normal minimum temperature. A deviation of over 6.4°C qualifies as a severe warm night.
With June increasingly crossing these thresholds, the month is being mentioned more frequently in IMD heatwave bulletins compared to May.
Longer and harsher heat spells in June bring multiple challenges, including water scarcity and a surge in power demand. On Wednesday, Punjab's electricity demand reached an all-time high of 16,836 megawatts. Apart from warm days, the spike in demand is also due to the paddy transplantation season, which peaks in June. Punjab cultivates paddy on approximately 3 million hectares, with most of the activity concentrated in this month. To support this, the government provides eight hours of uninterrupted power supply daily for irrigation. The increased use of air conditioning in homes and commercial spaces further strains the power infrastructure. There is also a heightened risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses during such extreme weather events.
Western disturbances brought significant relief to the region in May. Western disturbances are weather systems that originate in the Mediterranean Sea and move eastward, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and cooler winds to North India.
Thanks to a higher frequency and intensity of these disturbances, Punjab saw multiple rain events and cloudy days, which helped reduce daytime temperatures and temporarily eased the otherwise dry heat. According to meteorological data, Punjab experienced 10–11 western disturbances in May 2025, compared to 4–6 in May 2024. The state received 35 mm of rainfall in May — 102% above the normal of 17.3 mm.
With this, temperatures in most parts of Punjab remained around 40°C, except for cities such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Patiala which experienced 43.5°C, 43°C, 42.6°C, respectively on May 22 and 18. The average temperature for these cities during May stayed between 37.6°C and 38.2°C. In the earlier years, maximum temperatures have exceeded 44°C to 48°C, with monthly averages above 41°C in the same cities in May.
Meteorologists attribute the current heatwave to broader climatic shifts, including delayed or weaker western disturbances and shifting jet streams. These changes allow heat to accumulate and persist into June, while May sees fewer extreme heat events.
The delay of western disturbances, which usually bring pre-monsoon showers, has led to severe heatwaves in Punjab this June. Pre-monsoon showers, typically expected in early June, are now forecast to arrive in the third week of June, a delay of 7–10 days. This leaves Punjab under clear skies, intense solar radiation, and rising humidity levels.
The situation is worsened by the early sowing of paddy starting June 1 and the increased cultivation of summer maize, another water-intensive crop. Maize is often sown before paddy, further stressing groundwater resources. The absence of cloud cover creates the perfect conditions for heatwaves, with temperatures soaring above 44–47°C. Urban heat island effects in cities such as Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Patiala intensify the impact.
Further compounding the problem are soil and land-use changes, primarily due to excessive paddy and wheat cultivation, which has led to groundwater depletion. The reduction in green cover and pollution of natural water bodies also contribute to localised warming.
Surinder Pal, director of IMD Chandigarh, said that while June heatwaves are not unusual as in the past too temperature in June went as high as it is now, but May was definitely cooler this year. 'Some relief is expected after June 14 when weather conditions will begin to change,' he said.

On Friday, the city's base weather station at Safdarjung logged a maximum temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal and a drop from the 43.9 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier, which was the warmest this season. The humidity oscillated between 51% and 69%. The winds blow in the easterly direction at speeds up to 11.1 kmph. Mungeshpur village in north-west Delhi, which on Thursday recorded 45.2 degrees Celsius, becoming the only area in the city to record a heatwave, saw a drop of 6.1 degrees Celsius on Friday. The maximum temperature at the weather station at Mungeshpur was at 39.1 degrees Celsius. Elsewhere, Ayanagar and Palam both recorded a high of 40.6 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road was at 39.1 and Ridge, at 39.3 degrees Celsius. "Tomorrow's maximum temperatures are likely to be in the range of 39-41 degrees Celsius, which will be near normal for the period," stated a forecast by IMD. The Met office hasn't issued a colour-coded warning for Saturday but forecast the maximum temperature to be between 39 degrees and 41 degrees. Thunderstorms, rain and strong winds up to 60 kmph are also likely. By June 16, the maximum temperature may be hovering at 36-38 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the city's air quality remained 'moderate' on Friday. The air quality index read 187 against Thursday's 195, both in the 'moderate' category. A severe heatwave continued to scorch several parts of Haryana and Punjab on Friday, with Sirsa emerging as the hottest city in both states, recording a blistering 47.6 degrees Celsius, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). In Haryana, Hisar experienced intense heat with a temperature reaching 44.6°C. Other cities also battled high temperatures — Gurugram at 44°C, Rohtak at 43.1°C, Narnaul at 44.3°C, and Bhiwani at 43.6°C. However, some relief came to Ambala and Karnal, where maximum temperatures were relatively lower at 38.2°C and 37.5°C, respectively. Panchkula and Panipat's Ujha recorded moderate highs of 37.2°C and 36.5°C. Despite the scorching heat, Charkhi Dadri district witnessed 10 mm of rainfall accompanied by a hailstorm, while Balasmand in Hisar recorded light rain measuring 4 mm, with a maximum temperature of 45.4°C. After a hiatus of a fortnight, conditions have become favourable for further advancement of the Southwest monsoon over some more parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Odisha during the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said on Friday. Conditions are also favourable for its advancement over some parts of Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar during the subsequent three days, IMD said. Monsoon is likely to be in active phase with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rain (>20 cm/24 hours) at isolated places over south peninsular India as well as Konkan and Goa from June 13 to 17. However, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue over Northwest India, including Western Himalayan region, during the next two days and reduce thereafter, IMD said. The IMD declares it as a heatwave in the hilly regions if the maximum temperature is over 30°C, with the departure also being 4.5°C or more above normal. For the plains, this is declared when the maximum is over 40°C and also 4.5°C or more above normal. Further, monsoon is likely to advance over most parts of northwest India during the week of June 19 to 25, IMD has said in its extended range forecast on Thursday. This is earlier than expected. Maximum temperatures are likely to decrease over northwest India during that week. These are likely to be below normal over most parts of the country, IMD has said. On Friday, the northern limit of monsoon continues to pass through Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island and Balurghat. An upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over northwest Rajasthan and a trough is running from this upper air cyclonic circulation to Marathwada across Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha in lower tropospheric levels. An upper air cyclonic circulation is also over north Interior Karnataka and adjoining Telangana and Rayalaseema in lower and middle tropospheric levels titling south-westwards with height. A trough is running from west-central Arabian Sea to south coastal Odisha in lower tropospheric levels. A western disturbance is also impacting the Western Himalayan region. There is likely to be light/moderate rainfall at some/isolated places accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh till June 19; also in east Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan till June 19. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely to be recorded in Uttarakhand till June 19; east Uttar Pradesh from June 17 to 19 and west Uttar Pradesh on June 19. Dust storm/ thundersquall (wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) is very likely to be experienced at isolated places over Rajasthan from June 13 to 17. Heat wave conditions are very likely at many/some places over Rajasthan till June 15 with severe heat wave conditions at some parts over west Rajasthan on June 14. Rainfall activity will expand westwards and monsoon will cover nearly the entire country, including all of northwest India in the week of June 19 and June 25,' said M Mohapatra, director general, IMD. 'Monsoon flow is strengthening now. Monsoon is expected to cover the whole country by June 22 to 25,' said M Rajeevan, former secretary, ministry of earth sciences. 'Longer hiatus is now being seen during the monsoon progress. There is a systematic increase of hiatus days in recent years,' he added.
