Government awards €600m contract for maintenance of Ireland's major road network

Irish Examiner19-05-2025

A massive State tender potentially worth up to €600m has been awarded to operate and maintain major roads, including the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork.
The awarding of the contract to Egis will see it responsible for the Dublin tunnel and the Motorway Operations Control Centre, which monitors 1,200km of Ireland's motorways.
Transport minister Darragh O'Brien said these were all 'critical pieces of national infrastructure' that contribute to the Irish economy as well as improved road safety.
'Egis and Transport Infrastructure Ireland [TII] have worked together to identify and implement upgrades to improve operations and reduce emissions,' he said.
Under the contract, Egis will oversee tolling at the Dublin tunnel as well as being responsible for maintenance, fire safety compliance and the upkeep of key infrastructure such as electrical and drainage systems.
In areas with widespread camera coverage like the M50 in Dublin, it will have to detect incidents and coordinate the response, monitor traffic and direct the coordination between emergency services during incidents.
Furthermore, it will also manage calls from the 1,600 emergency roadside telephones on Irish motorways and be responsible for the real-time information on signs across the network.
It must also align itself with TII's sustainability plans, which includes the 'intention to source 100% of operational energy from renewable sources from day one and continuing to transition the infrastructure to net zero'.
Its stewardship comes after concerns were recently raised about traffic gridlock on the eastern approaches to the Jack Lynch Tunnel and the Dunkettle Interchange.
Last month, it emerged that Cork County Council engineers would raise the issue with the project team in charge of the multi-million euro road upgrades in the area.

Connacht appoint Stuart Lancaster as head coach

CONNACHT HAVE APPOINTED Stuart Lancaster as the province's new head coach on a two-year deal. The coaching coup sees Lancaster, 55, return to Irish rugby having previously spent seven years at Leinster, where he helped the province to a Champions Cup title as well as a Pro14 four-in-a-row. Lancaster, who coached England at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, was most recently the director of rugby at Racing 92 in France's Top 14 before parting company with the Parisian giants in February. He will take charge out west ahead of pre-season training in July, and will take responsibility for Connacht's defence as well as his overall head coaching role. The appointment completes Connacht's coaching ticket, which also includes the incoming Rod Seib as attack coach, Cullie Tucker as scrum and contact coach, and John Muldoon as lineout and maul coach. 'I'm hugely excited to be joining Connacht Rugby and begin this new chapter of my life in the West of Ireland with my wife Nina,' Lancaster said on Tuesday. 'Connacht is a club with a proud identity, a passionate supporter base, and enormous potential both on and off the field, so I'm honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead the Professional Men's team programme. Advertisement 'I'm a firm believer in creating an environment that enables players to thrive and realise their potential, while playing a brand of rugby that inspires the community of which they represent. 'Ever since my initial conversations with Willie [Ruane, Connacht CEO], David [Humphreys, IRFU performance director] and the rest of the selection committee, it's clear that same belief exists here in Connacht, and that's why I'm so excited by this opportunity.' Humphreys welcomed Lancaster's appointment as 'a significant coup and a real statement of intent' for Connacht. 'Stuart is a hugely talented coach with a proven track record in developing young talent and in delivering high performing and successful teams. 'It was clear in the recruitment process of his knowledge and enthusiasm for Irish Rugby and this appointment will be a huge boost to the game in Ireland.' Connacht CEO Ruane hailed Lancaster as 'one of the most respected coaches in world rugby'. 'We are absolutely thrilled to appoint someone of his calibre. He has a proven track record in developing young talent, building a high-performance environment, and most importantly, delivering success and helping teams realise their ambitions. 'His coaching philosophy and his vision for how the game should be played, perfectly matches our own values and our own ambition.'

New car registrations fell 8.8% in May but EV sales rise again

New car registrations fell 8.8% last month compared to May 2024, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) said, though EV sales continue an upward trend. There were 5,832 cars registered in May 2025, compared to 6,398 last year. Registrations year to date are up 2.4% (79,301) on the same period last year (77,461). The most popular selling car in May was the Volkswagen Tiguan. Sales of battery electric vehicles (EVs) were up 5.3% during May, with 1,092 new electric cars registered, compared to 1,037 registrations in May 2024. The most popular EV sold in May was the Hyandai Inster. So far this year, 12,392 new electric cars have been registered, representing a 23.3% increase on the year to date in 2024, when 10,052 electric cars were registered. Elon Musk's Tesla sales were down 60% compared to May 2024, with 91 units sold over the month compared to 237 in May 2024, with sales of the brand's Model Y down over 50%, though sales of its Model 3 are up 43%. Mr Musk's political links to Donald Trump have seen Tesla sales across Europe fall significantly in recent months, though Irish sales had remained robust. Tesla has sold 993 units to date in Ireland this year compared to 1,085 in 2024. Last week, Mr Musk announced he was stepping away from the US Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which has slashed budgets at several US government agencies. Tesla is the fourth highest EV seller by brand this year, behind Volkswagen, Kia, and Hyandai, and just ahead of Chinese EV maker BYD. The Tesla Model 3 is the third highest selling EV, behind the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Kia EV3. May was the fifth consecutive month that EV sales have increased on 2024, said SIMI director general Brian Cooke, with over 12,300 new electric cars sold so far this year, representing a 23% increase on last year. "While we are now on schedule to reach the interim Climate Action Plan target of 175,000 electric cars by the end of this year, as highlighted by the EPA recently, we need to do more to accelerate the growth in EV sales between now and the end of the decade,' said Mr Cooke. User car imports were up 7.9% (5,949) in May 2025, compared to May 2024 (5,513). Year to date imports are up 7.5% (28,184) on 2024 (26,206). In the new car market share by engine type for 2025, petrol cars remain the new car market leader at 27.6%, followed by hybrid (petrol electric) at 23.09%, diesel at 17.42%, electric at 15.63%, and plug-in electric hybrid at 14.64%.
