Dem Congressman Blasts 'Deeply Troubling' DHS Handcuffing Of Staffer In New York Office

Yahoo2 days ago

Agents from the Department of Homeland Security handcuffed a staffer in Rep. Jerry Nadler's New York office last Wednesday, according to a statement the Congressman posted on X.
The incident was also captured on video, which was obtained by Gothamist.
In the video, a DHS agent can be seen handcuffing a staffer who is distressed and crying. A second agent is seen attempting to enter another room in the office, which is occupied by a second staff member. That staffer then asks if he has a warrant and the agent says he doesn't need one, and accuses the office of 'harboring rioters.'
Nadler raised alarm about DHS's conduct, noting that 'no arrests were made' and that 'the situation was quickly de-escalated,' but that it was disturbing that the incident took place at all.
'The decision to enter a Congressional office and detain a staff member demonstrates a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries,' Nadler wrote. 'If this can happen in a Member of Congress's office, it can happen to anyone–and is happening.'
In its statement regarding the incident, a senior DHS official told HuffPost that members of the Federal Protective Service 'responded to information that protesters were present inside U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler's District Office in Manhattan, New York.' That statement also claimed that agents visited the office to 'ensure the safety and well-being of those present' due to 'earlier incidents in a nearby facility.'
The statement does not reference remarks that the DHS agent made about the office 'harboring rioters,' and has been contested by Nadler's chief of staff Robert Gottheim, who has called it a 'total fabrication and lie.'
'DHS's statement that they were coming in for a safety check doesn't mesh with the video,' Gottheim told The New York Daily News, adding that the staffer who was handcuffed is 'traumatized.'
Nadler's Manhattan office is located in the same building as an immigration court where DHS agents were also detaining immigrants that day, The New York Times reports. Gottheim told The Times that staffers witnessed these confrontations and invited immigration advocates to the office, which upset DHS agents.
'Upon arrival, officers were granted entry and encountered four individuals,' the DHS official said. 'Officers identified themselves and explained their intent to conduct a security check, however, one individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office. The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check. All were released without further incident.'
DHS agents' detention of Nadler's staffer follows multiple cases of federal law enforcement penalizing Democratic leaders. Previously, ICE officers arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka while he was visiting a New Jersey detention facility. And New Jersey's federal prosecutor has also charged Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) with assault over her alleged actions at the facility during that same visit.
Nadler condemned the 'aggressive and heavy-handed tactics' employed by DHS against his office and immigrants in general in his statement. 'Trump and the Department of Homeland Security are sowing chaos in our communities,' he wrote.

Family searching for answers after man killed in same Baldwin Park shooting that left police officer dead

Darius Wong, a father of two, dropped his daughters, wife and sister-in-law off outside the front door of a family party in Baldwin Park on Saturday so he could park their car down the street. For reasons that are still unclear to his family, Wong never made it to the party. He was instead shot dead on the street, and now the family says they're seeking justice. Wong, 43 of Hacienda Heights, was the man killed on Filhurst Avenue in Baldwin Park, which led to more tragedy just minutes later. After finding Wong lying on the sidewalk at about 7:12 p.m., a neighbor called the police. Members of the Baldwin Park Police Department arrived and found Wong dead. Darius Wong, 43, was shot and killed on Saturday, May 31, 2025, just before an officer with the Baldwin Park Police Department was allegedly killed by the same suspect. The Vuong Family In the next few moments, the officers encountered a suspect, who authorities say was armed with a rifle. A gun battle ensued, leading to two officers and the suspect being shot. One of the officers, later identified by officials as Samuel Riveros, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Another officer, Anthony Pimentel, was briefly hospitalized. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identified the suspect as 22-year-old Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen. He was also wounded and remained hospitalized as of Monday, but he could face two murder charges upon his release. It's not yet clear what motive Medina-Berumen could have had when he allegedly shot and killed Wong and Riveros. When speaking with KCAL News, the family of Wong alleged Medina-Berumen got in a dispute over a parking spot with another guest of the party Wong was attending, although he wasn't involved. They say Wong was shot in the back, unclear of the situation. "Darius left this world far too soon and in the most innocent of ways — without truly knowing what was happening," Wong's brother Victor Vuong wrote in an online fundraiser. His family called him a "hardworking man who cared deeply for his family," which includes two daughters who are 3 and 5 years old. L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman's office said charges against Medina-Berumen were set to be announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Trump Education Secretary Gets Embarrassing Math Lesson in Hearing

The U.S. secretary of education is having issues with basic math. Linda McMahon testified on Trump's 2026 budget before the Senate on Tuesday. While discussing spending on federal grants programs for disadvantaged students—TRIO and the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, or GEAR UP—she made a massive math error. 'We spend $1.58 billion a year on TRIO?' Republican Senator John Kennedy asked McMahon. 'Yes,' she replied. 'That's one thousand, five hundred and eighty million dollars a year? Is my math right?' Kennedy said, spelling out $1.58 billion. 'I think that's right, sir.' 'And how long have we been spending one thousand five hundred and eighty million a year on this program?' he asked. 'I'm not sure the total length and time of the program.' 'More than 10 years?' 'Yes.' 'So that's over a trillion dollars that we've spent on this program.… We give this money, as I appreciate it, to colleges and universities to encourage poor kids to go to college,' Kennedy said, before going on to insinuate that the colleges were stealing this grant money from the government for their own purposes. Democratic Senator John Reed jumped in to check the math, as both Kennedy and the education secretary were way off. 'I'm not a great mathematician, but I think you were talking about a trillion dollars? I believe $1.5 billion times 10 is $15 billion, and that's a little bit off from a trillion dollars,' Reed stated, referring to Kennedy and McMahon's claim. 'I think the budget cuts $1.2 billion,' McMahon responded. 'Well that would be $12 billion, not a trillion dollars,' said Reed, calmly holding McMahon and Kennedy's hands through what amounted to a third-grade math lesson. 'OK,' McMahon said stiffly. The hearing was a mess in other ways, as well. McMahon also refused to clarify to Senator Tammy Baldwin whether or not she would distribute congressionally appropriated funds for after-school programs. 'What we have done in putting forward our operating plan, the first operating plan to show where we're making allocations, and then followed up with the second operating plan—' 'This isn't a nuanced question,' Baldwin interrupted. 'Congress passed a law appropriating this funding. You said in your confirmation hearing you would spend funding Congress appropriated. If the answer isn't simply 'yes,' based on all the evidence before us, that leads me to believe that you are planning to withhold funding and short-change schools, students, and families across America.'

Elon Musk attacks Trump's funding bill: 'Disgusting abomination'

Days after attacking a megabill that advances President Donald Trump's legislative agenda, Elon Musk slammed it again on Tuesday, calling it a "disgusting abomination" in a post on X. "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination," Musk wrote of the House-passed bill. "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it." MORE: Trump ramps up criticism of GOP Sen. Rand Paul amid push to pass his funding bill Musk followed up with another post claiming the bill "will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt." The legislation extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts and boost spending for the military and border security -- while making some cuts to Medicaid, SNAP and other assistance programs. It will also add about $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion in debt over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Negotiations on the bill are underway in the Senate, with the president working the phones and having meetings with senators to try to get his sweeping agenda passed by Congress. Asked about Musk's comments, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed his criticism. "Look, the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill," Leavitt said during the White House press briefing. "It doesn't change the president's opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill and he's sticking to it." This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
