West Brom sack Tony Mowbray after Derby defeat crushes Premier League hopes
LONDON, April 22 — West Brom yesterday sacked manager Tony Mowbray after a 3-1 Championship defeat at home to relegation-threatened Derby all but ended their hopes of promotion to the Premier League.
The loss left West Brom 10th in the second tier following five defeats in six games and the club confirmed Mowbray's departure hours after the final whistle, with assistant head coach Mark Venus also exiting.
'The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts—but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results,' West Brom said in a statement.
'Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at The Hawthorns and their contributions to the club winning the 2007/08 Sky Bet Championship title will never be forgotten.'
Former Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers boss Mowbray, 61, was reappointed as Albion head coach in January, almost 16 years after he left The Hawthorns for Celtic in June 2009 but results have been poor.
James Morrison will take interim charge of the team, who are six points adrift of the top six with two games to play.
Speaking after the game, Mowbray said he felt his team's poor run had dented their confidence.
'I feel disappointed for the fans and players, I've told them what I think is missing,' he said. 'They have to get together in the dressing room, root it out and turn up in the next two performances.
'I felt the team lacked a little bit of bravery and it was unlike us to lose the goals we did.' — AFP

Soccer-Kane spares England's blushes against Andorra
Soccer Football - World Cup - European Qualifiers - Group K - Andorra v England - RCDE Stadium, Cornella de Llobregat, Spain - June 7, 2025 England's Harry Kane Action Images via Reuters/Peter Cziborra BARCELONA (Reuters) -A lacklustre England laboured to a 1-0 away win against Andorra to maintain their 100% start to World Cup qualification campaign with captain Harry Kane's second-half goal sparing their blushes on Saturday. On a sultry afternoon in Barcelona, Kane's scrambled effort shortly after the interval was all that separated Thomas Tuchel's team of Premier League household names with the side sitting 173rd in the world rankings. As expected, England dominated possession but were short of the quality expected with only Chelsea winger Noni Madueke managing to impress in an instantly forgettable match. England secured the win, however, and sit comfortably top of Group K with three wins from three. (Reporting by Martyn Herman, editing by Ed Osmond)

Horse racing-Lambourn wins Epsom Derby for O'Brien
Horse Racing - The Epsom Derby - Epsom Downs Racecourse, Surrey, Britain - June 7, 2025 Wayne Lordan riding Lambourn on his way to winning the 15:30 Betfred Derby Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs EPSOM, England (Reuters) -Front-running Lambourn roared to victory in the 246th running of the Epsom Derby on Saturday, a record-extending 11th win in the race for trainer Aidan O'Brien. Lambourn, who went into the race at 13-2, set a blistering gallop under jockey Wayne Lordan to beat the Charlie Johnston-trained Lazy Griff into second place. The win marked an Oaks-Derby double for O'Brien after Minnie Hauk battled to victory in the fillies' Classic on Friday, relegating previously unbeaten favourite Desert Flower into third. Chester Vase winner Lambourn was not the most fancied of O'Brien's runners in the race but favourite Delacroix, under jockey Ryan Moore, and The Lion In Winter were unable to make an impression in the running. Tennessee Stud, a 28-1 shot, finished in third. (Reporting by Virginia Furness; editing by Clare Fallon)

Sacked Postecoglou as hailed ‘a Spurs legend' by Son
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR captain Son Heung-min said Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked as manager on Friday, had 'changed the trajectory of this club' by delivering their first silverware in 17 years. Postecoglou guided Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final last month to clinch the club's first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. But the 59-year-old Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. Son, though, in an effusive tribute on Instagram said Postecoglou had transformed the club. 'Gaffer. You've changed the trajectory of this club,' wrote Son. 'You believed in yourself, and us, since day one and never wavered for a second. Even when others did. 'You knew what we were capable of all along. You did it your way. And your way brought this club the best night it's had in decades. We will have those memories for life.' Son, who has seen five managers sacked in the past six years by chairman Daniel Levy, said he had formed a close relationship with Postecoglou during his two year tenure. 'You trusted me with the captaincy,' said the 32-year-old Korean star. 'One of the highest honours of my career. It's been an incredible privilege to learn from your leadership up close. 'I am a better player and a better person because of you. 'Ange Postecoglou, you are a Tottenham Hotspur legend forever. Thank you, mate.' Tottenham were ravaged by injuries and in the latter stages of the campaign Postecoglou focused on keeping his key players fit and fresh for the Europa League. The gamble paid off but even securing Tottenham's first trophy since the 2008 League Cup was not enough to save the former Celtic handler. Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Fulham manager Marco Silva, Crystal Palace's FA Cup winning handler Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola are reportedly the leading candidates to replace Postecoglou. – AFP
