New £1.5m south Essex seafront pavilion set to open as hunt for cafe firm continues

AN Essex council is spending £1.5million on a seafront pavilion but bosses do not have 'a suitable tenant' or opening date, despite external works progressing.
Construction for the new pavilion just off Thorney Bay Beach on Canvey is expected to be completed in May, but the council is still looking for a cafe operator, with signs at the site about the vacancy.
The new business is already delayed, as last September Canvey Independent, council leader Dave Blackwell, said it was due to open to the public in the spring, with construction works set to finish by January.
The council says it does not have any exact date yet for opening.
Barry Palmer, Canvey Independent councillor for economic growth and climate action said: 'Construction works are expected to be completed in May. This development is an important investment for the area, providing much-needed public facilities, including toilets, for those visiting Thorney Bay and the surrounding seafront.
'It will improve local amenities and create a more accessible and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors alike. Subject to a suitable tenant, it is expected to house a café, further enhancing the seafront experience and supporting local business. We look forward to unveiling the Pavilion in the coming months and will continue to share updates as progress continues.'
Plans to regenerate the seafront have been on the table for at least six years. In 2019 plans included a new pavilion with a viewing area, a new retail kiosk, increased car parking and an improved walkway to connect Thorney Bay with Canvey's central seafront.
Castle Point Council has been awarded the money from the government's Coastal Communities Fund which meets the majority of the project's £1.72 million price tag. The seafront is also benefiting from investment with Fantasy Island funfair expanding and almost £10million being spent on improved sea defences.

Port Royal makes changes to accommodate growth

PORT ROYAL, S.C. (WSAV) — Officials from the Town of Port Royal said their town is popping up on several travel sites as the 'next place to see and visit.' They said that's leading to a larger number of tourists traveling through and to some folks thinking of making it their permanent home. The town recently made some changes to accommodate the rising number of folks visiting but now they're planning more even for the future. Mayor Kevin Phillips for the Town of Port Royal says they are prepared. 'We know that growth is coming. We know that people are coming and with that brings challenges. But as long as we, I think, try and plan and be proactive instead of reactive, we can really meet those challenges.' Phillips said any town with a motto of 'cool, coastal and far from ordinary' is a special place, so seeing the recent spike in visitors is no surprise. Phillips said last year the town noticed flooding at the entrance to Sands Beach. He said that it was limiting many folks from accessing the beach, so the town invested a lot of money in a project that would help alleviate the issue. 'A lot of really big things are happening. We actually just opened up our new causeway to Sands Beach. We did that on Friday afternoon. It's been going well so far,' said Phillips. Phillips emphasized they have been working hard to keep the town quiet and safe while also accommodating tourists In addition to the revamped Sands Beach entrance, Phillips confirmed they also installed 28 speed bumps on several residential streets to slow down traffic. 'We still are a residential area. Even though we have an urban center, we still have a lot of families, people of all different ages, walking, riding bikes, riding golf carts and scooters,' said Phillips. 'Those roads are shared with trucks. Trucks pulling boats, semi-trucks. So, we just want everybody to slow down and be safe.' Phillips said he anticipates even more traffic and tourism once the port, owned by Safe Harbor, and the town's waterfront is developed. 'The town's got plans to build back our shrimp docks. We're going to bring the Spanish Moss Trail across Ribaut Road, finally bringing the Spanish Moss Trail down into the Port Royal Village, connecting it with Sands Beach,' said Phillips. 'So, the rest of this year and next year is really going to be exciting.' The town has a meeting on Wednesday night where they will have their second vote on the planned unit development (PUD) and planned development agreement with Safe Harbor. Phillips said he believes that will kick-start the development of the port. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. DP World Champions Sustainable Ocean Stewardship on World Ocean Day 2025

Each year on World Ocean Day, observed globally on June 8, we are reminded of the urgent environmental challenges confronting our oceans – from rising sea levels projected to impact over 200 million people by 2100, to the accelerating degradation of marine ecosystems. These realities underscore the need for decisive, collaborative action to protect and restore ocean health. 'World Ocean Day highlights the importance of the ocean for life on Earth and the role each of us can play in helping create a healthy ocean,' states the World Ocean Day organization. 'The ocean is our planet's life support system – it regulates the climate, produces over half of the oxygen we breathe, powers the global economy, and as the world's largest ecosystem, it sustains an incredible wealth of biodiversity.' This year's theme, Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us, reminds us of the critical importance of marine environments to our lives and livelihoods. With 90% of global trade transported by sea, healthy oceans are essential to global economic stability, the longevity of our coastal assets, and the resilience of our supply chains. This is where the opportunity lies – to lead with ocean-positive action and sustainable maritime practices. Making a Positive Impact At DP World, we are driving meaningful change through our Ocean Strategy, a blueprint for integrating ocean-positive practices into global trade. This initiative positions the company at the forefront of the Sustainable Blue Economy, where economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand. This year's World Ocean Day aligns with the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC), bringing together leaders across sectors to accelerate progress on UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. DP World is proud to support this global agenda by translating sustainability commitments into measurable action. From piloting ocean innovations like Living Seawalls at our sites – to increasingly restoring mangrove ecosystems worldwide – we're taking action to regenerate marine ecosystems. In 2024, we launched a $100 million Blue Bond to finance sustainable port infrastructure, waste-management solutions and marine ecosystem restoration. Ocean Stewardship in Action: Projects Across the Americas DP World recognizes that safeguarding ocean health demands cross-sector cooperation and local engagement. Across the Americas, the company is advancing ocean conservation and water stewardship through science-based programs and community partnerships as part of its Our World, Our Future sustainability strategy. Stephanie Vanderbilt Named SBA Business Person of the Year as Coastal Windows & Exteriors Celebrates 15 Years and National #1 Ranking

Beverly-Based Woman-Owned Business Named #1 Woman-Owned Contractor in the U.S. by James Hardie BEVERLY, Mass., May 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Coastal Windows & Exteriors, a Beverly-based woman-owned remodeling company, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with national recognition. James Hardie has named the company the #1 Woman-Owned Contractor in the U.S., marking a major milestone in Coastal's journey from a one-desk startup to one of New England's most awarded exterior remodelers. Owner Stephanie Vanderbilt, recently honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration as Massachusetts' Small Business Person of the Year, leads one of the most awarded companies— a milestone made even more meaningful by their deep community roots and regional impact across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Founder Stephanie Vanderbilt launched Coastal in 2010 after a career teaching the deaf, bringing her passion for education into the remodeling space. "Our success started in a classroom," says Vanderbilt. "That mindset of putting education first is still the foundation of everything we do. We lead with empathy and transparency to help homeowners make confident decisions." Over the past 15 years, Coastal has installed thousands of energy-efficient windows, doors, roofing, and siding systems across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. These accolades reflect a long-standing commitment to exceptional workmanship, customer satisfaction, and team excellence. "Coastal has demonstrated impressive job creation and community impact through programs like Roofs for Heroes." said SBA District Director Robert Nelson. "Stephanie is the finest example of a small business in today's business world," added Michael Bevilacqua, VP of the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce. "Her dedication to her customers and community — especially veterans — is especially noteworthy." But for Vanderbilt, recognition is only part of the story. "Our mission is to serve," says Vanderbilt. "We just happen to install siding, roofing, windows, and doors." That service-first mission extends to the broader community through programs like Roofs for Heroes, which provides free roof replacements to local veterans, and Coastal has also donated over $375,000 in products and services to Habitat for Humanity. With a 4.8-star Google rating and 7,000+ homes transformed, Coastal continues to build more than just beautiful exteriors. "When you lead with passion and empathy," Vanderbilt adds, "you create real impact, break barriers, and shape a legacy."
