Driver arrested after car plows into celebrating Liverpool fans

LONDON — A 53-year-old British man plowed his minivan into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans who had been celebrating the city team's Premier League championship on Monday and was arrested, police said.
There was no immediate word from authorities on how many people were injured. An air ambulance and other emergency vehicles swarmed the scene to respond to reports that multiple pedestrians had been hit.
'It was extremely fast,' said Harry Rashid, who was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters and only several feet away. 'Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.'
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was being updated on the situation and thanked police for their quick response.
'The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,' Starmer said.
Liverpool fans had come out in their tens of thousands to celebrate the team winning the Premier League this season for a record-tying 20th top-flight title.
Liverpool's last league title came in 2020 but supporters were denied the chance to publicly celebrate that trophy due to restrictions in place at the time during the pandemic.
Dancing, scarf-and-flag-waving fans braved wet weather to line the streets and climb up traffic lights to get a view of Liverpool's players who were atop two buses bearing the words 'Ours Again.'
The hours-long procession — surrounded by a thick layer of police and security — crawled along a 10-mile route and through a sea of red smoke and rain. Fireworks exploded from the Royal Liver Building in the heart of the city to seemingly signal the end of the parade.
The team issued a short statement saying its thoughts and prayers were with those affected.
Rashid said after the car rammed its initial victims, it came to a halt and the crowd charged the vehicle and began smashing windows.
'But then he put his foot down again and just plowed through the rest of them, he just kept going,' Rashid said. 'It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.'
Rashid said it looked deliberate and he was in shock and disbelief.
'My daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground,' he said. 'They were just innocent people, just fans going to enjoy the parade.'

Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert will start Monday against Red Sox

Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) — Right-hander Logan Gilbert will be activated from the 15-day injured list and start for the Seattle Mariners on Monday against the Boston Red Sox, manager Dan Wilson told reporters Sunday morning. Gilbert, 28, has been on the IL since April 26 because of a right elbow flexor strain. He has made three appearances for Triple-A Tacoma as part of a rehab assignment, going 0-0 with a 2.79 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 9 ⅔ innings. This season, Gilbert is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in six starts for the Mariners, striking out 44 and walking six in 30 1/3 innings. Gilbert was sixth in AL Cy Young Award voting last year, when he went 9-12 with a 3.23 ERA. He has made at least 32 starts each of the past three seasons, and is 42-31 with a 3.55 ERA in five major league seasons. Gilbert's return should aid a Seattle rotation that has struggled while dealing with injuries this season. Mariners starters have a 4.09 ERA this season, which is tied for 18th-best in the majors. Last year, Seattle's rotation had the lowest ERA in the league. ___ AP MLB: recommended in this topic

Rory McIlroy ends his US Open on a high note with a 67. The next major is in his home country

Associated Press OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Rory McIlroy could leave Oakmont feeling like he accomplished something, even if it took the full four days for him to produce a truly impressive round. McIlroy shot a 3-under 67 on Sunday, finishing the U.S. Open at 7 over and giving himself a performance he can build off as he works toward the year's final major — next month's British Open at Royal Portrush in his home country of Northern Ireland. 'It will be amazing to go home and play in that atmosphere and see a lot of people,' McIlroy said. 'I'm really looking forward to it. It was nice to end this week with a bit of a positive note with the way I played today.' McIlroy skipped talking to the media after his first two rounds this week, and much of his availability Saturday was spent being asked why. His golf was a bigger topic Sunday. It had been unremarkable through three days, but he at least momentarily had Sunday's low round after finishing with six birdies — four on the back nine. 'Physically I feel like my game's there,' he said. 'It's just mentally getting myself in the right frame of mind to get the best out of myself.' That's been a theme for McIlroy lately when he has talked. Winning the Masters and completing the career Grand Slam was a seismic moment in his career, and returning to those heights has been a struggle. 'Look, I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you've got to make your way back down, and you've got to look for another mountain to climb,' he said. 'An Open at Portrush is certainly one of those.' First, McIlroy has the Travelers Championship in Connecticut next week. And the Scottish Open is a week before Royal Portrush. In addition to finding motivation, McIlroy has needed to work out some issues on the tee after his driver was deemed nonconforming before the PGA Championship. In that respect, Oakmont was a step forward — even if at times this week he seemed eager to leave this course behind. 'I feel like I've driven the ball well all week,' McIlroy said. 'Really encouraged with the driver and how I drove it as well. It's not necessarily the driver, it's more me and sort of where my swing was. I feel like I got a really good feeling in my swing with the driver, which was great. Hopefully I can continue that on into next week.' After the Travelers, a return to the other side of the Atlantic looms, and McIlroy is looking forward to it. "If I can't get motivated to get up for an Open Championship at home, then I don't know what can motivate me," he said. 'I just need to get myself in the right frame of mind. I probably haven't been there the last few weeks.' ___ AP golf: recommended in this topic

Milos Kerkez's brother shares biggest Liverpool transfer hint yet before critical date

The brother of Liverpool transfer target Milos Kerkez has shared a social media post that states the left-back is 'soon to be' a new player for the club. The Reds are closing in on agreement with Bournemouth ahead of the summer window reopening on Monday morning. Advertisement The ECHO has reported that Liverpool remain confident of striking an agreement for the £45m-rated defender having agreed a £116m fee with Bayer Leverkusen for midfielder Florian Wirtz. It has been a top priority to sign a long-term successor to Andy Robertson, especially now so the 31-year-old Scotland international has emerged as a surprise target for Atletico Madrid. Kerkez has flirted with the idea of a summer transfer to join the Reds through social media, though it is his brother Marko's latest activity that has kicked up a new online storm. Milos Kerkez's brother Marko made a post to Instagram -Credit:Instagram: @kerkez_marko The image shows Bournemouth's Kerkez steering a boat, as he is known to currently be away on his summer holidays. Marko, 24, is a full-back for Greek Super League side Aris Thessaloniki and his account is followed by the Cherries defender. As the Reds will be officially able to register new players again when the window reopens on Monday, it remains to be seen how quickly this process plays out. Advertisement Negotiations are being pushed by sporting director Richard Hughes, who has a strong direct relationship with the South Coast club having previously been in the same role with them. Another man close to Kerkez is Liverpool's very own Dominik Szoboszlai, who remained tight-lipped when asked about the possible deal for his Hungary teammate. "I don't know about him... for now," he teased speaking to Nemzeti Sport when pressed for an update. Robertson has also talked on the subject of being replaced, saying: "I think at any big club you always have to keep moving, the club always moves forward and I think you've also seen other big clubs like Manchester City have been very active early doors in the window. Advertisement "The club have identified certain positions where they want to get new blood in, it looks like players we're linked to are all younger players and they are all exciting players as well. "So when you play for a big club like Liverpool you expect challenges, you expect competition and I have always faced that, everyone here has faced that in their own positions and I expect nothing less."
