Romania names interim premier as turmoil intensifies

BUCHAREST : Romania's liberal interior minister Catalin Predoiu became interim premier today, the presidency announced, a day after the prime minister's resignation deepened political tumult in the EU nation.
Romania's pro-EU prime minister Marcel Ciolacu stepped down yesterday after a far-right candidate topped the first round of a tense presidential vote rerun.
Far-right EU critic George Simion topped Sunday's election first round, while the ruling coalition's candidate narrowly lost out to Bucharest's mayor for the second spot.
Ciolacu's resignation comes just two weeks ahead of the presidential vote runoff on May 18 in the EU and Nato member, which has gained in strategic importance since Russia invaded Ukraine, neighbouring Romania.
Ciolacu said his Social Democrats (PSD) party would leave the ruling coalition but they are expected to remain in the government on an interim basis until after the election run-off.
Predoiu, 56, is a former justice minister who already served as interim premier in 2012.
Predoiu, who practiced as a lawyer in the past, is also the current interim president of the liberals (PNL).
He told reporters yesterday that the liberals have 'sworn-in ministers in the government, they will carry out their duties'.
'As long as these mandates are in office, the PNL does its duty,' he said.
Closely watched rerun
In Sunday's first round, Simion, who leads the nationalist AUR party, gained almost 41% of votes, double the score of the pro-EU mayor Nicusor Dan, an independent.
A far-right victory in the second round – closely watched by Brussels and Washington – could mark a shift in the country's foreign policy.
The president represents Romania at EU and Nato summits and can veto EU votes.
He also appoints the premier and other government posts.
Campaigning on a vow to put Romania first, Simion, a fan of US President Donald Trump, has criticised 'Brussels' unelected bureaucrats', accusing them of having meddled in the Romanian elections.
In December, Romania's constitutional court in a shock move scrapped the presidential ballot after far-right politician Calin Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round.
The annulment followed allegations of Russian interference and a massive TikTok campaign that emerged in favour of Georgescu.
Simion has called the annulment 'a coup d'etat'.
Georgescu was barred from the rerun but two major far-right parties decided to back Simion instead.

Sabah CM hints at possible state polls announcement after late July party meet
KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said today that a date has yet to be set for the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, amid speculation that it could take place by late July or early August. However, he signalled that an announcement may follow Parti Gagasan Rakyat's general assembly at the end of July. 'Not yet. We'll hold the general assembly meeting at the end of July first,' he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian after officiating the Sulaman Gagasan Rakyat Division's annual conference in Tuaran today. Hajiji, who is also Gagasan Rakyat president and Sulaman division chief, was responding to questions about whether the assembly would be dissolved to pave the way for the 17th Sabah state election. The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman said the ruling coalition is prepared to face any challengers in the polls. 'GRS is ready to face anyone in the upcoming election. That is our stance, but any decision on political cooperation must be made by the GRS supreme council,' he reportedly said. Hajiji also backed GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali's recent comments supporting a straight fight between GRS and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state polls. 'I support his view, but no final decision has been made. This is not coming from us — BN has stated they're not interested. We shouldn't force anyone if they're unwilling,' he added. Armizan had earlier said he personally agreed with Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin that GRS and BN should contest separately. Hajiji said this year's Gagasan Rakyat general assembly would be significant as it comes ahead of the state election, expected soon. In his speech, he urged party members to take lessons from the current political climate and counter opposition misinformation on social media. He expressed confidence that his Sulaman seat, which he has held since 1990, would remain under GRS, along with the other three state seats in the Tuaran parliamentary constituency — Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli and Kiulu.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Pakatan Harapan Youth has mocked PAS Youth for turning a planned protest against the Urban Renewal Act (URA) into one calling for the prime minister's resignation. PH Youth chief Woo Kah Leong said such a protest was 'laughable' when Perikatan Nasional (PN) cannot even agree on who's their own candidate for the top job. He added that the Islamic party and its coalition partners, Bersatu and Gerakan, remain divided on who should succeed Anwar, should PN win the next general election (GE16). 'Has PN officially decided on whether (PAS president) Abdul Hadi Awang, (Bersatu president) Muhyiddin Yassin, or (Bersatu deputy president) Hamzah Zainudin is their pick for prime minister?' he asked in a statement today. Woo claimed the rebranded July 27 rally – initially announced as a protest against the URA – is nothing more than political theatre by PAS to demonstrate its dominance within PN while keeping Bersatu in check. 'In reality, PN is fragmented and lacks comprehensive administrative policies, be it at the federal level or in the four states it governs,' he said, referring to Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis, where all the menteris besar are from PAS. 'It can't even decide on a prime minister candidate. Instead of chanting 'Turun Anwar', PN should focus on having an internal meeting to make that decision.' PAS Youth first announced the rally in February, warning that the proposed URA could lead to the displacement of certain communities. The bill is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next month. However, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden yesterday announced that the wing decided to 'rebrand' the rally to one demanding that Anwar step down, called 'Turun Anwar'. The issue of PN's prime ministerial candidate is still subject to ongoing discussions within the coalition. PAS has not officially acknowledged Muhyiddin as the candidate, suggesting that it might prefer one of its leaders, as the party is the largest bloc in PN with 43 parliamentary seats. However, Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu was reported to have said Muhyiddin remains PN's sole candidate for the prime minister's position at GE16.
