"Hopefully not relegated" – Anwar teases Man United
KUALA LUMPUR: "Hopefully you won't get relegated to the Championship," Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim quipped, reacting to Manchester United's latest embarrassment — a 1-0 defeat to the Asean All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur.
Anwar, a long-time fan of the struggling Premier League giants, didn't hold back his disappointment after the post-season friendly.
"Oh dear! Manchester United have failed to win a trophy again," he said in a Facebook post today.
"You're going to have a headache next season too."
The Asean All-Stars stunned fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium with a composed performance, netting the only goal of the match. They played with discipline and composure, securing a well-deserved victory.
Lamphun Warriors Burmese winger Maung Maung Lwin netted the winner in the 71st minute for the Asean All-Stars. He beat the offside trap before firing into the top corner past Tom Heaton.
The result adds further pressure on United, who have already faced criticism for an underwhelming Premier League campaign.
Still, Anwar had praise for the victors. "Congratulations to the Asean All Stars, you lot really are the best," he said, applauding the regional squad's spirited display.
His remarks, though partly in jest, reflect growing unease among Manchester United fans worldwide as the club looks to rebuild ahead of next season.

Soccer-West Ham fined for homophobic chanting during Chelsea game
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - West Ham United v Leicester City - London Stadium, London, Britain - February 27, 2025 General view of corner flags inside the stadium before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo (Reuters) -West Ham United have been handed a fine of 120,000 pounds ($161,700) for homophobic chanting by their fans during their 2-1 Premier League loss at Chelsea on February 3, the Football Association said on Friday. An independent Regulatory Commission has also imposed an action plan on West Ham, the FA said. "It was alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters) did not behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent or insulting way with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation," the FA said in a statement. The club admitted the charge of misconduct, in relation to abusive, offensive, discriminatory, homophobic chanting by supporters. "The club has a zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory, abusive and insulting behaviour, and those identified will, in addition to any criminal charges they face, be issued with club bans," the East London club said. West Ham finished 14th with 43 points in the Premier League. ($1 = 0.7421 pounds) (Reporting by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Bengaluru;Editing by Christian Radnedge)

'No regrets': Man United winger Amad explains obscene gesture to Malaysian fans during friendly match in Bukit Jalil
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP): Manchester United winger Amad says he doesn't regret making what appeared to be an obscene gesture toward some fans in Malaysia because his mother allegedly had been insulted. Footage shared widely on social media appeared to show the 22-year-old Ivory Coast international raising his middle finger while outside a hotel with his teammates in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week. "I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mom,' Amad wrote on X. "I shouldn't have reacted like that but I don't regret what I did. We had a great time in Malaysia with good people.' United did not respond to a request for comment. The team's postseason Asia tour had already got off to a bad start when United lost its friendly against a South-East Asian (Asean) All-Star team 1-0 in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. Some fans booed in response. Even Malaysian Prime Minister datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was disappointed, suggesting United could be relegated after watching the team lose, despite the fact it was probably affected by jet lag. "Ouch. Man United failed to win another trophy,' said Anwar, one of 72,500 fans at Bukit Jalil Stadium in the Malaysian capital, wrote on social media in a post translated from Malay. "Looks like you're in for another tough season, hope you don't drop to the Championship,' he added, referring to England's second tier. United then travelled to Hong Kong for another friendly. "We were not really focused in the last game, and everybody can feel it,' United manager Ruben Amorim said Thursday. "We just want to turn the page and improve in the next season.' On Sunday, United finished 15th in the Premier League, its lowest-ever ranking in the competition, just four days after a loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur meant its European season ended without a trophy. - AP
