Sabrina Ionescu converted seven free throws in the final two minutes and made a key steal with 26 seconds left. Breanna Stewart had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and the New York Liberty held off the Golden State Valkyries 81–78 on Wednesday night.

The Liberty (11–3) had lost three out of four after winning their first nine games–including the first two meetings against the expansion Valkyries on May 27 and 29 in Brooklyn. In the first two matchups, Stewart had 51 points on 16-for-26 shooting while converting 18 of 25 free throws, her highest output against any opponent New York has faced more than once.
Martin finished with 21 points for the Valkyries, who had won two straight and five of six and sold out their eighth straight game at Chase Center, where they are 5–3. Golden State welcomed back center Temi Fágbénlé after her absence to play for Great Britain in the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, but she was held out of action to rest after the long travel. Valkyries guard Carla Leite missed the game because of a back injury.

Inzaghi looks for more Hilal firepower in must-win FIFA Club World Cup clash
NASHVILLE: In Nashville, the US' self-proclaimed Music City, Al-Hilal's new coach Simone Inzaghi is hoping to fine-tune an Al-Hilal forward line that has performed worryingly off-key so far at this month's FIFA Club World Cup. With only a Ruben Neves penalty to show for almost 200 minutes of football in the US, the Riyadh side face Mexico's CF Pachuca tonight knowing only a win will do if they are to progress to the round of 16. The Blues will need to find their rhythm. For all the praise received following the statement 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in Miami, it is Sunday's dull stalemate with Red Bull Salzburg that is freshest in mind. The statistics do not make for pleasant reading: across the two matches, Hilal managed 31 shots, but only six hit the target. Mbappe Absent from Real Madrid Squad for Salzburg Club World Cup Clash
Kylian Mbappe has been left out of the Real Madrid squad for Thursday's final Club World Cup group game against Red Bull Salzburg, despite returning to training following illness. The French superstar did not feature in the list of 23 players named by coach Xabi Alonso and published by the club for the match in Philadelphia, in which the two teams are targeting a place in the last 16. Mbappe had returned to training on Wednesday after missing Real's first two matches at the tournament in the United States due to illness. He was taken to hospital last Thursday for tests and treatment after suffering gastroenteritis, before later being released. He played no part in Real's opening game, a 1-1 draw with Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami, or the 3-1 defeat of Mexico's Pachuca at the weekend. Alonso did indicate after the latter game that Mbappe was on the mend, saying: "He is doing better, he is recovering." Real posted images of Mbappe in training on Wednesday on their website, as the squad worked out at their Florida base before travelling north in the afternoon to Philadelphia. It is there, at Lincoln Financial Field, where Madrid will take on the Austrians in their final Group H match and will be looking for a victory which will confirm their progress to the last 16 in first place in the section. A draw can also take them through to the next round, with Manchester City and Juventus the possible opponents in the last 16. Mbappe has scored 43 goals in 56 appearances since joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain last year. His last game was for France in a 2-0 win away to Germany in the UEFA Nations League on June 8.
