The story, by the paper's Glen Owen and Mark Hookham, claimed that 'before meeting his wife, Victoria, Sir Keir spent 'years' in a relationship with Maya Sikand KC, a high-flying barrister who now works as a part-time Crown Court judge'. It added: 'Six years ago, Ms Sikand, 55, was at the centre of a legal row at the chambers where she worked, with a colleague claiming in court papers that she was part of a group that 'explicitly endorsed the trans rights agenda''.

While the rest of Fleet Street was distracted by the pope's funeral, the MoS bravely bucked the trend and splashed on an 'exclusive' that… a woman who Starmer dated the best part of three decades ago has since espoused pro-trans views.
In Mail world, this is incontrovertible evidence that Starmer is at best a hypocrite and at worst a liar after he last week endorsed the Supreme Court's ruling that sex in the Equality Act refers to biological sex. In reality, however, the relationship between Starmer and Sikand appears to date back to the late 1990s. Starmer married Victoria in 2007. And the Supreme Court itself wasn't established until 2009. Sikand, meanwhile, is such a formative influence in the PM's life that she warrants not a single mention in Tom Baldwin's acclaimed biography.
(The Mail on Sunday did argue that 'both later contributed to a legal textbook, Blackstone's Criminal Practice, published in 2008'. Which they did – along with a sizable number of other contributors, in a book weighing in at 3,492 pages).
The scoop came via an updated version of the biography Red Flag by former Tory deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft, whose previous dodgy claims include the story of David Cameron putting his right honourable member in the mouth of a dead pig. Owen's journalistic hits, meanwhile, include Angela Rayner distracting Boris Johnson in the House of Commons by uncrossing her legs.

Keir Starmer urged 'all parties to step back' after Israeli strikes targeted Iran on Friday Iran quickly sent a wave of drones toward Israel in response. The PM called for tensions to be 'urgently' reduced after the significant escalation in hostilities in the Middle East. Mr Starmer convened a Cobra meeting this afternoon to discuss the situation. He also held a phone call with Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking about their conversation, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'The Prime Minister was clear that Israel has a right to self-defence and set out the UK's grave concerns about Iran's nuclear programme. He reiterated the need for de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution, in the interests of stability in the region.' 'But I'm very concerned about the escalation of this situation, which is why, along with Germany and France, we're really clear that de-escalation is what is needed here.' The PM confirmed the UK did not take part in the strikes but declined to say whether Britain would help Israel if Iran attacks again, as it has before. Now, schools in Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Scottish Borders and Shetland will create separate bathrooms for boys and girls. It comes after the Scottish government said that local authorities have a statutory responsibility for the school estate, including the provision of toilets. The majority of schools in Scotland offer both single-sex and gender-neutral toilets. But data obtained by BBC Scotland News revealed that 52 schools across 11 council areas have only gender-neutral toilets. Ten of these are located in Shetland, which now plans to add separate provisions. Scottish Borders, Aberdeenshire and Argyll and Bute councils are also following suit. The rules around gender provision in school toilets have not been updated since the School Premises (General Requirements and Standards) (Scotland) Regulations 1967 came into force. Seven councils are yet to confirm whether their schools will comply with the ruling. Dumfries and Galloway Council's legal team is reviewing its position. They did not confirm whether changes would be made. South Ayrshire, Moray, Stirling and South Lanarkshire councils said none of their schools had any gender-neutral toilets.
