How can Starmer survive the Mail on Sunday's stunning scoop?
The story, by the paper's Glen Owen and Mark Hookham, claimed that 'before meeting his wife, Victoria, Sir Keir spent 'years' in a relationship with Maya Sikand KC, a high-flying barrister who now works as a part-time Crown Court judge'. It added: 'Six years ago, Ms Sikand, 55, was at the centre of a legal row at the chambers where she worked, with a colleague claiming in court papers that she was part of a group that 'explicitly endorsed the trans rights agenda''.
Could Keir Starmer's time as prime minister be running out, following an incredible scoop from the Mail on Sunday? While the rest of Fleet Street was distracted by the pope's funeral, the MoS bravely bucked the trend and splashed on an 'exclusive' that… a woman who Starmer dated the best part of three decades ago has since espoused pro-trans views.
In Mail world, this is incontrovertible evidence that Starmer is at best a hypocrite and at worst a liar after he last week endorsed the Supreme Court's ruling that sex in the Equality Act refers to biological sex. In reality, however, the relationship between Starmer and Sikand appears to date back to the late 1990s. Starmer married Victoria in 2007. And the Supreme Court itself wasn't established until 2009. Sikand, meanwhile, is such a formative influence in the PM's life that she warrants not a single mention in Tom Baldwin's acclaimed biography.
(The Mail on Sunday did argue that 'both later contributed to a legal textbook, Blackstone's Criminal Practice, published in 2008'. Which they did – along with a sizable number of other contributors, in a book weighing in at 3,492 pages).
The scoop came via an updated version of the biography Red Flag by former Tory deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft, whose previous dodgy claims include the story of David Cameron putting his right honourable member in the mouth of a dead pig. Owen's journalistic hits, meanwhile, include Angela Rayner distracting Boris Johnson in the House of Commons by uncrossing her legs.

Will ministers EVER understand the harm being caused by them taking the public for fools?
Truth and lies WILL those ministers and officials running our public bodies ever understand the harm which is being caused by them taking the public for fools? Left-wing ideology has infected the civil service so much that anyone questioning the wisdom of allowing millions to arrive from overseas is automatically considered a 'far right' threat by the Prevent programme. 1 Meanwhile, police still fail to properly record crimes committed by foreign nationals, or have to be forced to come clean by brave opposition politicians. The latest example of trying to warp reality concerns the ongoing chaos at Britain's borders. Appearing on BBC Question Time, Treasury minister Darren Jones made the totally false claim that small boat migrants are mainly 'women, children and babies'. Yet — far from correcting the record — Downing Street tried to shut up shop. The reality? Some 70 per cent of those illegally arriving here by dinghy are men, many of them economic migrants. The overwhelming majority of Brits are decent, tolerant and warmly welcoming people. Those in charge would do well to treat them as such. Not seek to suppress debate or massage away uncomfortable truths. Starmer 'loses control' as over 1,000 migrants cross Channel in biggest daily total of 2025 – as French cops watch on A just mission ISRAEL was entirely justified in launching its surgical strikes on rogue terror-state Iran. The mad mullahs in Tehran are hell-bent on developing nukes and then wiping out Israel. Iran — bank-rolling both Hamas and Hezbollah — has repeatedly failed to comply with the UN on its uranium enrichment programme. And ignored Donald Trump's ultimatums to stop. How else was Israel supposed to react to this intolerable situation? Our Government should recognise another breathtaking Mossad operation has done well to take out the leader of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Ordinary Iranians will be silently giving thanks, too. Britain and America now have a duty to stand by Israel. The destruction of Iran's nuclear ambitions would do the world a great favour. Gongs & arrows The King's Birthday Honours this year celebrate Britain's finest achievers — from the youngest to the oldest. Luke Littler, just 18, deservedly gets an MBE for his darting heroics. There's a gong, too, for 99-year-old war hero Geoff Roberts, a veteran of the Arnhem campaign.

Urgent Cobra meeting called over Iran-Israel as PM voices 'grave concerns'
The Prime Minister has said he has 'grave concerns' about Iran's nuclear programme (Image: PA) The Prime Minister has said he has 'grave concerns' about Iran's nuclear programme as he backed Israel 's right to self defence. Keir Starmer urged 'all parties to step back' after Israeli strikes targeted Iran on Friday Iran quickly sent a wave of drones toward Israel in response. The PM called for tensions to be 'urgently' reduced after the significant escalation in hostilities in the Middle East. Mr Starmer convened a Cobra meeting this afternoon to discuss the situation. He also held a phone call with Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking about their conversation, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'The Prime Minister was clear that Israel has a right to self-defence and set out the UK's grave concerns about Iran's nuclear programme. He reiterated the need for de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution, in the interests of stability in the region.' 'We've long held concerns, grave concerns, about Iran's nuclear programme, and we absolutely recognise Israel's right to self defence,' Mr Starmer told Bloomberg News after the call. 'But I'm very concerned about the escalation of this situation, which is why, along with Germany and France, we're really clear that de-escalation is what is needed here.' The PM confirmed the UK did not take part in the strikes but declined to say whether Britain would help Israel if Iran attacks again, as it has before. In a separate statement, the PM described the strikes as 'concerning', adding: 'We urge all parties to step back and reduce tensions urgently. Escalation serves no one in the region. Stability in the Middle East must be the priority and we are engaging partners to de-escalate.' Downing Street said, in their phone call, Mr Starmer and his French and German counterparts discussed 'the long-held grave concerns about Iran's nuclear programme, and called on all sides to refrain from further escalation that could further destabilize the region'. They agreed that 'a diplomatic resolution, rather than military action, was the way forward', No10 added. In a post on X, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said "we are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region". Mr Trump said he "gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal" and warned that Israel has "a lot of" US military equipment, and they "know how to use it". "Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left ... JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE," he posted on Truth Social. David Lammy said 'this is a dangerous moment' as he voiced his concern over the strikes. "Stability in the Middle East is vital for global security. I'm concerned to see reports of strikes overnight,' the Foreign Secretary said. 'Further escalation is a serious threat to peace & stability in the region and in no one's interest. This is a dangerous moment and I urge all parties to show restraint." BLUESKY: Follow our Mirror Politics account on Bluesky here. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said 'Iran is an enemy of the UK' and warned "warm words" would not stop the country. "If Israel sees Iran getting nuclear weapons, I don't think it should sit back and put its feet up and say 'Well, we're de-escalating'', she said. "Because the person, the country, that will escalate is Iran, and that would be absolutely disastrous for the entire world." Relations with Israel have been strained in recent weeks as the UK Government takes a stronger stance against its condemned military action in Gaza. On Tuesday, the UK slapped sanctions on two Israeli government ministers for inciting violence against Palestinians. Security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and finance minister Bezalel Smotrich will both face a travel ban and see their assets frozen. But it emerged earlier this week that the UK is involved in training the country's military, the Israel Defense Forces, which is involved in the action in Gaza and also carried out the strikes on Iran. In response to a written parliamentary question, armed forces minister Luke Pollard said: 'As part of routine Defence engagement with Israel, the UK is currently training a limited number of Israel Defense Forces personnel on UK-based training courses.' Around 18 schools in Scotland will reintroduce single-sex facilities in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling in April that a woman is defined by biological sex. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Schools across Scotland will reintroduce single-sex facilities following April's Supreme Court ruling Credit: PA This then meant that guidance around toilets, changing rooms and other facilities had to be reviewed to exclude trans people where single-sex services are provided. Now, schools in Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Scottish Borders and Shetland will create separate bathrooms for boys and girls. It comes after the Scottish government said that local authorities have a statutory responsibility for the school estate, including the provision of toilets. The majority of schools in Scotland offer both single-sex and gender-neutral toilets. But data obtained by BBC Scotland News revealed that 52 schools across 11 council areas have only gender-neutral toilets. Ten of these are located in Shetland, which now plans to add separate provisions. Scottish Borders, Aberdeenshire and Argyll and Bute councils are also following suit. The rules around gender provision in school toilets have not been updated since the School Premises (General Requirements and Standards) (Scotland) Regulations 1967 came into force. Seven councils are yet to confirm whether their schools will comply with the ruling. Dumfries and Galloway Council's legal team is reviewing its position. Five other councils - Clackmannanshire, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, Midlothian and Perth and Kinross - all confirmed that they had at least one school in which offered no single-sex facilities. They did not confirm whether changes would be made. South Ayrshire, Moray, Stirling and South Lanarkshire councils said none of their schools had any gender-neutral toilets.
