The Welshman, who had a 16-year tenure at Craven Cottage, was renowned for helping to nurture young talent, including Gareth Bale and Trent Alexander-Arnold, throughout his career. Elias was born in 1953 and was crucial in the development of his compatriot Bale at Southampton's academy. During his illustrious career, Bale would go on to win 111 Wales caps and lift five Champions League titles with Real Madrid. Alexander-Arnold, who Elias helped develop during his time at Anfield, won eight major trophies with boyhood club Liverpool before joining Real Madrid earlier this month. Having started his career with nine years at Oxford United, Elias then worked as Swansea City's academy manager between 1995 and 1999 before his spells with Southampton, Liverpool and Fulham. In 2009, Elias left Liverpool to relocate to west London, where he remained until his death. His sharp eye for spotting talent led him to discover and aid the development of Harvey Elliott, who made his debut as the Premier League's youngest ever player before transferring to Liverpool. Article continues below As well as Bale, Elias also helped cultivate the likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Luke Shaw at Southampton before they moved on to greater things. He spoke fondly of Bale back in 2020, describing him as a late developer with a brilliant attitude. It was Elias who broke the news to Bale's parents he had made it as a scholar at the club. He told the Athletic: 'I remember saying to his mum and dad — Frank and Debbie — when he started getting in the Welsh teams, 'One thing Gareth needs to do is to learn the national anthem because he will be the top player, and he'll be fantastic for the Welsh Language Society'. Because if they see someone like Gareth Bale signing the anthem, which is something he does with gusto now… you can see his pride. 'He's got unbelievable support from his family who have been there since day one. Gareth has still got the same friends from when he was just an ordinary academy player and his mum and dad are just the same. They're just down to earth people.' The club released a statement saying: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and dear friend, Malcolm Elias, after a short illness." The statement continued: "A proud Welshman, Malcolm was approaching his 16th anniversary at Craven Cottage this summer, having joined us from Liverpool in July 2009, while he also previously enjoyed a highly successful spell at Southampton alongside future Fulham colleagues Huw Jennings and Steve Wigley. "The influence that Malcolm had on the modern game cannot be understated, having worked with and developed the likes of Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliott, Luke Harris and Jay Stansfield, to name but a few. Article continues below "A hugely popular figure around the training ground, Malcolm will be sorely missed by all who knew him. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Paula - Malcolm's ever devoted and endlessly supportive wife of nearly 50 years - his sons Andrew and Daniel, his six beloved grandchildren, as well as his additional family and friends." Southampton added: "We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Malcolm Elias, one of the influential figures in the club's youth development history."
