In big US visa scam, Indian admits to staging robberies across US
As the Trump administration acts to plug the holes that allowed illegal immigrants to stay back in the US, more cases of armed robberies staged to obtain U-visas are coming forward. A New York-based Indian national, Rambhal Patel, has pleaded guilty to staging armed robberies at retail stores across the US to help illegal immigrants exploit the U-visa programme, which offers deportation relief to victims of certain crimes. Since March 2023, Patel and his accomplices staged at least nine robberies across American states.advertisementPatel, 37, entered a guilty plea on Tuesday before US District Judge Myong J Joun in Boston to one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud. His sentencing has been scheduled for August 20. In December 2023, Patel was charged along with a co-conspirator.The fake robbery was caught on surveillance cameras. The footage showed a burglar waving a weapon, taking cash, and escaping the scene. The "victims" paid Patel to participate in the scheme. Usha Vance recalls meeting with Modi, says children put him in ‘grandfather category'
United States Second Lady Usha Vance talked about her experience of visiting India and meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She shared this at the US-India Strategic Partnership forum in Washington DC. Vance recalled that meeting with PM Modi was a 'very special moment' and said that her children put him in the grandfather category. Stating that the children loved PM Modi, she said that her kids were sleep deprived, and when "they saw an Indian man with a white beard and white hair, they just put him in the grandfather category immediately.' Vance also termed her visit to India as a 'trip of lifetime,' and added that it was her children's first visit to India. She said that her kids met PM Modi in Paris and hugged him. Also PM cemented his status by giving her five year old son a birthday present. Talking about the Prime Minister, she said that he was 'very kind and generous' to the kids and that the talks between him and Vice President JD Vance were very 'productive'. Vance also noted that though her children grew up knowing so much about India's food, relationship with grandparents and friends, they never had the chance to see it. So it was 'just mind blowing from their perspective,' she added. Further, when they were at the Prime Minister's residence, her son Ewan was just taken by the entire cart of mangoes that was available for him to eat, and he announced to the Prime Minister that he thought he could maybe live there and started making his plans. Vance shared that her eldest son, Ewan, was particularly captivated by the temple sculptures, while her middle child, Vivek, was thrilled to see elephants, camels, and peacocks. Her daughter's favourite moment was a ride in an auto-rickshaw. During the visit, the children had several playful moments with PM, from exploring the lawns to seeing bird feeders at PM's residence. PM Modi also presented the three children with peacock feathers. (With ANI Inputs)

MUMBAI: Former police officer Ranjeet Kasle, who had earlier claimed that he was offered a contract to kill Massajog sarpanch murder accused Walmik Karad, was on Monday produced at the Esplanade court and remanded in judicial custody. Kasle is accused of spreading communal hatred, defaming public officials and sharing objectionable content on social media. The NM Joshi police station had registered a first information report (FIR) against Kasle last week, based on a complaint by a Bhandup-based social activist. He was accused of posting defamatory and objectionable messages against a woman politician, and booked for publishing or circulating false information, defamation and criminal actions intended to insult the modesty of a woman under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with the IT Act, said police. On Friday, Kasle was arrested from Delhi and brought to Mumbai. He was produced before the court on Saturday and remanded in police custody for two days. On Monday, he was produced before the court again and remanded in judicial custody. Police officers who interrogated Kasle said he wanted to increase his followers on social media by putting up controversial posts. Kasle's viewership on social media was around 80,000 and he would start getting money once the figure crossed the 100,000-mark, he told the police. 'During interrogation, he said that does not care about police cases and will continue to put up controversial posts once he is released from judicial custody,' a police officer aware of the matter said. Kalse was suspended when he claimed that he was offered a contract to kill the main accused in the Santosh Deshmukh murder case while he was posted in Beed district. Donald Trump Likely To Speak With Xi Jinping This Week Amid US-China Tariff Tensions
Last Updated: Donald Trump is likely to speak with Xi Jinping "very soon" amid the ongoing tariff war between the US and China, the White House said. US President Donald Trump is likely to speak with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday. This comes days after Trump accused the rival country of breaking a deal to reduce tariffs and trade limits. The agenda of the call is likely to sort out disagreements over last month's tariff deal made in Geneva, besides other major trade issues between the two countries. However, it was not entirely clear when Trump and Jinping would speak. Leavitt is the third top US official to confirm Trump's possible call with Jinping, after the President himself and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Bessent told CBS News on Sunday that Trump and Jinping would talk to each other 'very soon" to discuss the trade differences, which also include a dispute over critical minerals and Beijing's restrictions on exports of certain minerals. Trump said last week on Friday that he was sure he would speak with his Chinese counterpart. Bessent led the trade talks with China in Geneva last month, which resulted in a temporary pause in the trade war between the two economic giants, however, the progress has been slow since then, the US Treasury chief said in an interview with Fox News last week. The announcement of the US-China deal to put on hold the retaliatory high tariffs on each other for 90 days sparked a big rally in global stock markets. However, it didn't solve the main reasons behind Trump's tariffs on Chinese products — especially U.S. concerns about China's state-controlled, export-focused economy. Such issues are yet to be discussed in future conversations between the two leaders. Last week, a US trade court ruled that Trump went beyond his legal powers when he imposed most of his tariffs on imports from China and other countries, including India, using emergency law on April 2. However, a federal appeals court put that decision on hold and brought the tariffs back, stating that it needed time to review the government's appeal. The appeals court gave the challengers until June 5 to respond, and the Trump administration until June 9. First Published: June 03, 2025, 07:05 IST
