"Congress suggested Karnataka govt to re-enumerate caste census data": KC Venugopal

India Gazette2 days ago

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): After Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar met the Congress top leadership in New Delhi on Tuesday, Congress MP KC Venugopal said that the meeting discussed two to three crucial issues, including the caste census and the Bengaluru stampede.
Speaking to the media, Venugopal said that as some people have 'apprehensions' about the caste census data, the Congress top leadership has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate the data.
'Rahul ji, CM of Karnataka, PCC chief of Karnataka and state in-charge met today. Basically, 2-3 issues were discussed. First was the caste census, which the Karnataka government will be going to discuss on June 12 in a special cabinet meeting. The Congress party thinks that whatever the Karnataka Government has done on the Caste Census, it has to be agreed upon in principle. However, there are some apprehensions from some community sections and people about the data. The Congress party has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate within a stipulated time.'
Speaking on the Bengaluru stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that killed 11 people and left over 50 injured, KC Venugopal said that CM Siddaramaiah briefed the Congress leadership about the action taken by the government.
'We also discussed the current political situation, including the tragic incident that happened in Bengaluru. CM and PCC President briefed the leadership about the incident and the action taken by the government afterwards. We are concerned about every single life. We didn't want to get involved already, a judicial probe has been ordered, but we want the probe to be completed in a fixed tenure,' the Congress leader said.
'The Central government's attitude was one of the most important things discussed. They are completely neglecting the state of Karnataka. The Central Plan Allocation to Karnataka is totally unacceptable. They are marginalising Karnataka into a corner. This is an injustice to the people of the state,' Venugopal added.
The Karnataka CM and Deputy CM met the Congress top leadership today at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi.
Bihar, Karnataka and Telangana have already conducted a caste census in their respective state. Telangana has also implemented a 42 per cent backwards class reservation for people in the state.
The Karnataka State Commission for Backwards Classes has also submitted the caste census (socio, economic and educational survey) report to the Siddaramaiah-led cabinet. The caste census report, if released, will be the second by a Congress-ruled state, after Telangana. (ANI)

Siddaramaiah asks Andhra CM to revoke ban on Karnataka's Totapuri mangoes

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has urged his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Chandrababu Naidu to withdraw the ban on entry of 'Totapuri' Mangoes from Karnataka into Chittoor district. In a letter dated June 11, the CM said such unilateral actions, taken without prior consultation or coordination, run contrary to the spirit of cooperative federalism. He also expressed concerns that the move could lead to avoidable tension and retaliatory measures, and disruption of the inter-state movement of commodities. Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh had on June 10 written to her counterpart in Andhra Pradesh K Vijayanand requesting him to revoke the ban. Farmers in Srinivasapura, a major mango growing belt in Kolar district, bordering Andhra Pradesh, held protests and observed a taluk-level bandh on Wednesday, demanding a support price for mangoes and withdrawal of ban imposed by the neighbouring state. 'I am writing to convey my deep concern over an order reportedly issued by the District Collector of Chittoor on June 7, imposing a ban on the entry of Totapuri mangoes from other States into the district. I understand that multidisciplinary enforcement teams comprising officials from the Revenue, Police, Forest, and Marketing Departments have been deployed at the inter-State check-posts adjoining Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to implement this directive,' Siddaramaiah said. Noting the considerable hardship caused to mango growers in Karnataka, particularly those in the border regions cultivating Totapuri mangoes in substantial quantities, he said these farmers have long relied on the robust linkages with Chittoor-based processing and pulp extraction units to sell their produce. 'The current restriction has disrupted this well-established supply chain and threatens significant post-harvest losses, directly impacting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers,' he said. 'I am also concerned that this may lead to avoidable tension and retaliatory measures, with stakeholders already expressing discontent that could potentially disrupt the inter-State movement of vegetables and other agricultural commodities.' Seeking Naidu's intervention into the matter, the CM urged him to issue necessary directions to the authorities in Chittoor district for the immediate revocation of the said order. 'I trust that you will treat this issue with the seriousness it warrants, and take swift steps to restore the seamless movement of agricultural produce in the interest of farmer welfare,' he added.

Colombia prez bypasses lawmakers, issues decree for vote on labour reform

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday bypassed legislative opposition and signed a decree summoning voters to the polls in August to decide changes to the country's labour laws, including whether work days should be limited to eight hours. The decree fulfilled Petro's threat to Congress to put his labour system overhaul before voters should senators not approve the 12-question referendum themselves. He issued the measure in a tense political climate following the Saturday shooting of opposition senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay during a public event. The referendum has become the crux of long-running tensions between the executive and legislative branches. After Congress rejected Petro's labour reform twice, most recently in March, he sent lawmakers a 12-question referendum proposal on May 1 as Colombian law requires that the Senate rule on the advisability of referendums. The legislative body two weeks later voted 49-47 against the measure, prompting Petro to accuse lawmakers of fraud. Petro, Colombia's first leftist president, has accused Congress of working against the interest of workers and has asked them to demonstrate across the country. The referendum's questions include whether workers should receive double pay if they work during holidays; whether daytime workdays should end at 6 pm; and whether open-ended contracts should be offered to workers to prioritise job stability. The disagreements between Petro and Congress date back to the start of his term in 2022, but they have heightened as he seeks to consolidate his legacy ahead of next year's legislative and presidential elections. Uribe remained in critical condition on Wednesday following his shooting in broad daylight Saturday during a political rally in the capital, Bogota. Authorities investigating the motive have not ruled out the possibility that it was a targeted attack on the opposition. They are also considering whether it was an attempt to destabilise the current government, or retaliation by illegal armed groups. In anticipation of court challenges, Petro on Wednesday said his government will send the decree to Colombia's Constitutional Court for review. At the same time, the Council of State is considering a lawsuit seeking to annul the Senate's vote.
