‘He's always been a hitter': Chicago Cubs call up Moisés Ballesteros for MLB debut with Ian Happ on injured list

Chicago Tribune14-05-2025

Moisés Ballesteros fittingly was playing the video game 'MLB: The Show' when the call came.
Triple-A Iowa manager Marty Pevey phoned Ballesteros on Monday to share the news that his big-league dream was coming true. Ballesteros threw his video game controller in excitement.
'I was in shock for like 5 or 10 minutes,' a grinning Ballesteros said Tuesday in the home dugout at Wrigley Field.
The Chicago Cubs made the move official Tuesday afternoon, calling up Ballesteros, their No. 4-rated prospect according to MLB Pipeline, with left fielder Ian Happ going on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Right-hander Tyson Miller was transferred to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man spot for Ballesteros, who started against the Miami Marlins in the seven spot as the designated hitter.
'My nerves, the first time in the big leagues — nothing,' Ballesteros said. 'It's the same game. It's the same goals for me.'
He said his goals ultimately come down to one thing: 'Stay here in the Show.'
In a twist of happenstance, Ballesteros' parents, Harry and Andry, were able to make it to Wrigley for his debut. They had arrived in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday from Venezuela on a pre-planned trip to watch him play at Triple A. He was able to share the news of his big-league call-up with them in person.
Only 21 years old, the lefty-hitting Ballesteros has raked at every level the Cubs have challenged him with since he signed with the organization for $1.2 million in 2021. And in the process, Ballesteros has put up his standout offensive numbers by facing older pitchers for nearly the entirety of his professional career. For only 41 of his 1,578 plate appearances at all levels, Ballesteros has hit against a younger pitcher.
In 34 games with Iowa this season, Ballesteros hit .368 with seven doubles, one triple, four home runs, 18 RBIs and a .942 OPS. He leads all qualified Triple-A hitters in batting average while being seventh in OPS, 11th in on-base percentage (.420) and 14th in slugging percentage (.522). Ballesteros had a 19-game hitting streak from April 11 to May 3, during which he posted a .500 OBP and 1.171 OPS.
'He's always been a hitter,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'He's been the youngest player on his team, still, for his whole career. And he's always been one of the better hitters, and that's impressive.
'He's got a gift to hit, that's what his real skill is, what his real talent is, what his gift is. And that's impressive. Every year you look up and you're saying he's doing that at this age, at that level, and you can't help but take notice. It's not easy to do, and you don't see guys do it.'
Ballesteros is expected to predominantly DH for the Cubs, though Counsell didn't rule out he might get a look at catcher before adding, 'I don't think that wasn't the intent of calling him up, we have two catchers playing well.'
The Cubs are optimistic Happ will only miss the minimum 10 days on the IL, a move that was retroactive to Saturday, because of the oblique strain. But Counsell conceded he had initially thought Happ was only day-to-day, so 'I was wrong already on this one.' Oblique injuries are notoriously tough to predict a recovery time. Seiya Suzuki will take over regular playing time duties in left field during Happ's absence.
'There was a debate whether to kind of stretch this out, to go to kind of come, have him come in every day and see how we're doing,' Counsell said of the IL decision. 'Ultimately, time of year (we) said, 'Let's not go through that process and give it four or five days where you don't have to worry about getting yourself ready to play in a game and have it behind you when you get activated.' So that's what we're going to make sure we do.'

Cubs to 'Aggressively' Pursue Starting Pitching and Bullpen at Trade Deadline

Cubs to 'Aggressively' Pursue Starting Pitching and Bullpen at Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a strong start to the 2025 season, the Chicago Cubs are sitting atop the National League Central. The reason for such early-season success has been the incredible offense the Cubs have put together. But, there is still a need to improve the pitching staff, both in the rotation and the bullpen. Advertisement According to a new report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cubs are expected to be one of the most aggressive teams at the MLB trade deadline. Nighengale writes, "The Cubs are seeking a front-line starter and relievers," as the teams trade targets. With Justin Steele done for the year, Javier Assad dealing with a setback in his recovery, and Shota Imanaga also banged up, the Cubs have a clear need in the starting rotation. There may not be a lot of options on the table at starting pitcher, but the Cubs have the Minor League prospects to beat out the competition for a top-of-the-line starter available on the market. Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele (35) looks on after throwing a pitch against the Athletics during the second inning at Sutter Health Szczepanski-Imagn Images After Corbin Burnes suffered a season-ending injury, the Arizona Diamondbacks could move Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly at the trade deadline. If the Boston Red Sox fall out of it, they could move Walker Buehler. There will be options available, but the Cubs will have competition for those arms. Advertisement The same goes for the Cubs' desire to aggressively pursue bullpen help. This comes after the Cubs' bullpen had the best ERA in baseball among bullpens in May, with an impressive 2.37 ERA. Even more impressive, the Cubs' bullpen since April 19th has been the best in baseball, allowing the lowest ERA (2.46), the fewest home runs allowed (7), the lowest batting average (.191), and the lowest WHIP (1.04). Despite the Cubs' bullpen putting together such a strong stretch, there is still concern over the long-term viability of the bullpen. Adding an arm, especially a top-end talent like Mason Miller or Pete Fairbanks, would elevate the Cubs' bullpen ever further. After a great start to the year, the Cubs are expected to be aggressive at the MLB trade deadline. With a stacked offense, the Cubs will look to improve their bullpen and add one of the top starting pitchers available on the market. Cubs' Justin Steele Gets Into It on Social Media With Chicago Fans

Cubs' Justin Steele Gets Into It on Social Media With Chicago Fans originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele has not had the start to the Major League Baseball season that he wanted. In fact, his 2025 season ended on April 7, when he left a game because of an elbow injury. Steele had surgery to repair the flexor tendon and UCL in his left elbow and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. Advertisement But that has not prevented him from getting into a social media spat with a fan. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele (35) pitches during the first inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Gorski-Imagn Images Since he is not able to support the team with his on-field performance on the diamond, he instead made a social media post raving about how his team was performing. That post came with some backlash from another X user. "Is this Cubs team the best base running team baseball has ever seen?" Steele wrote on X. One Chicago fan took issue with the support Steele was giving his teammates. "Best base running team??? Fries in the bag bro," said user @GeorgeJenn1ngs. The pitcher swung back with a bit more of a personal insult, "George; with all due respect. Your X account is about as cool as your turtle neck. Here's your fries," Steele said. Advertisement Steele has been described in the past as "soft spoken" with an "aw-shucks personality" by writer Jordan Bastian, making the dispute a little bit surprising. Still, in a world where athletes are exposed to more criticism than ever because of social media, this exchange has become increasingly common. It is a long MLB season and things like this are going to happen. Cubs Trade Idea Lands Diamondbacks Zac Gallen Amid Corbin Burnes Injury

Cubs Trade Idea Lands Diamondbacks Zac Gallen Amid Corbin Burnes Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs have a clear need to address by the time the trade deadline comes around. They need more starting pitching. With Justin Steele done for the year, Javier Assad a ways away from returning, and Shota Imanaga banged up, the Cubs need to add a new starting pitcher. Advertisement For this trade idea, the Cubs call up the Arizona Diamondbacks for starting pitcher Zac Gallen. After staff ace Corbin Burnes suffered a season-ending injury that will result in Tommy John surgery, according to Jeff Passan, the Diamondbacks will be open to moving their assets. Gallen is in the final year of his current deal, and will be a free agent for the 2026 season. The return for Gallen in this trade idea costs the Cubs top-ten prospects right-handed pitchers Brandon Birdsell and Jaxon Wiggins. Birdsell is the Cubs seventh ranked prospect, while Wiggins is the team's ninth ranked prospect. Sending both pitchers to Arizona should be more than enough for a rental of Gallen. It even might be too much, as Gallen has struggled in 2025. Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (23) throws against the Atlanta Braves in the third inning at Truist Davis-Imagn Images Gallen, in his seventh season in the big leagues, is having a down year. Through the first 13 games of the season for Gallen, he has a 5.13 ERA and a 4-7 record. In 73.2 innings, Gallen has allowed 65 hits, 42 earned runs, and 11 home runs. He's struck out 70 batters, and walked a National League leading 33 batters. Advertisement His 2025 season so far is a far-cry from the previous three years of work in Arizona. From 2022 to 2024, Gallen has a 3.20 ERA in 93 games with 43 wins and 19 losses. He struck out 568 batters, walked 148, and has an ERA+ of 131. In that time-span, Gallen was an All-Star in 2023, and earned Cy Young votes, ranking fifth in 2022 and third in 2023. Gallen's production in 2025 hasn't matched his past three seasons, but he should still have that capacity in him. Gallen turns 30 in August, and becomes a free agent after the season. The veteran right-hander is in the final year of his current deal, and is making $13.5 million. This trade idea adds Gallen to the Cubs rotation, plugging a hole that was left wide-open following Steeles season-ending injury early in the year.
