Miami Grand Prix Prediction: Norris to Get Back on Track in Florida

Independent02-05-2025

Formula 1 returns to the USA this weekend with the fourth edition of the always star-studded Miami Grand Prix, and the first US race of the season promises to continue the drama fans witnessed in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Oscar Piastri climbed to the top of the Drivers' Championship last week with a win in Jeddah, replacing team mate Lando Norris, who could only manage fourth place, leaving him 10 points behind the Aussie.
While McLaren have made an excellent start to 2025, a threat looms large in the rearview mirror in the form of world champion Max Verstappen.
Red Bull's pace is closer to McLaren's than had previously been thought, and though a time penalty ruined his attempt to win in Jeddah, he's just 12 points behind Piastri in the Drivers' standings at this early point in the season.
As has been the case ahead of most races this season, the McLaren duo are the two favourites for the race in Miami, with both offered at odds of 11/8, while Verstappen is a 5/1 shot with betting sites.
Miami Grand Prix Betting Preview: McLaren at Home in Miami
Piastri and Norris go into the sixth race of the 2025 season as the top two in the Drivers' Championship and they look tough to oppose at the narrow Miami International Autodrome, where overtaking is tough, but not impossible.
The duo have been pre-race favourites on F1 betting sites ahead of pretty much every weekend so far this season, and it's the same scenario again in Miami, where Norris won his first race in Formula 1 last year.
It's clear that everyone else will struggle to keep up with the pace of the McLaren cars this season, though it looks like Verstappen will put up the closest fight.
However, with the Red Bull cars expected to perform worse than in Jeddah due to the heat in Florida, the Dutchman will need right at the top of his game if he's to add to the two wins he's already achieved in Miami.
At the same time, it has been in the warmer temperatures where McLaren has excelled so far in 2025.
To that end, it may be best to avoid a wager on Verstappen springing a surprise – instead, opt for a double of Piastri and Norris to finish in the top two, which is even-money with Bet365.
Miami Grand Prix Tips: Russell to Land Another Podium Finish?
While Verstappen remains the main challenger to a potential McLaren duopoly this season, Mercedes' George Russell isn't too far off the pace.
The Briton sits just 14 points behind Verstappen in the Drivers' Championship and has managed three podium finishes from five races so far in 2025 (having finished fifth in the other two).
Russell's best finish this season was second in Bahrain, and he's proven that he can compete with the McLarens on any given race weekend, finishing ahead of Norris in Bahrain.
And with both Russell and team boss Toto Wolff acknowledging that the car has performed better than expected in warmer conditions so far, if Mercedes can learn from the mistakes in Jeddah, the Brit could be in line for another top-three finish.
Elsewhere on the grid, Charles Leclerc is the other driver who'll hope to rival those at the top this season, but with the Ferrari man priced is a 7/4 shot this weekend to finish on the podium for only the second time in 2025.
Ferrari have been off the pace in qualifying and that means Russell could sneak in ahead of the Red Bulls and Ferraris to clinch that last podium place.

Liverpool star has honest response to transfer as Reds chase Florian Wirtz

Liverpool are entering the final stages of negotiations to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and the arrival of the playmaker could spark the exits of others Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has claimed he is unaware of any interest from Bayern Munich. The Reds' pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has sparked rumours that their other forwards could be sold to help fund the move. Liverpool remain in talks with Leverkusen over a deal for Wirtz, with their latest bid of £100million plus £13m in add-ons rejected. But they are expected to return with a fourth and final offer, worth £118m, to get a Premier League record move across the line. ‌ With a new star potentially arriving on Merseyside, there are doubts surrounding the futures of Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. While Nunez has been linked with Atletico Madrid and Diaz with Barcelona, it is Bayern who are reportedly eyeing Gakpo, having missed out on signing Wirtz. ‌ Mirror Football understands that Liverpool boss Arne Slot has little interest in parting ways with Gakpo this summer after the Dutchman played a role in the club winning the Premier League title. And it seems that Gakpo is of the same opinion, having addressed the reports while on international duty. 'I haven't heard anything about it myself. I'm closing myself off from it,' he said ahead of the Netherlands' 2-0 victory over Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. 'Maybe my agent has heard something, but I'm focusing on myself.' Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven for £40m in January 2023 and still has three years left on his contract. He has 41 goals and 17 assists in 128 games for the club so far and, at 26, looks set to be a key player going forward. Bayern's interest has surfaced due to the expected departure of Leroy Sane, who will leave the German giants with a gap to fill on the left wing. Bayern had believed they were at the front of the queue to sign Wirtz from Leverkusen, only for the 22-year-old to communicate his desire to join Liverpool instead. HAVE YOUR SAY! Which players should Liverpool consider selling this summer to fund the Florian Wirtz deal? Comment below. ‌ Gakpo would appear to be a difficult target for Bayern, given his enjoyment of playing under Slot in the 2024/25 campaign. 'I think he offered me a lot. The first thing he did was change my position slightly, so back to the left,' he said recently. 'That was maybe a small change on paper but for me it was a big change. Then I had to come into the team as well and he gave me the chance to show myself. 'Obviously he's trying to help me to develop myself in moments in the game, how to be smarter, how to be better, how to get yourself more in scoring positions and giving the decisive pass and everything like this. 'He's helping me a lot. The manager and the staff, they try to help everybody, and I think everybody can see a lot of players are developing well.' Tottenham face Thomas Frank dilemma thanks to unusual Brenford clause

Thomas Frank has quickly emerged as Tottenham's top target to replace Ange Postecoglou, but their pursuit of the Brentford boss could be more difficult than anticipated Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will have to pay the full £10m to land top managerial target Thomas Frank. It remains unusual for a club to have to pay a player-style transfer fee but Brentford inserted the buy-out clause which starts at £10m for their highly-rated manager. Chelsea set a Premier League record when they paid £21m compensation to land Graham Potter from Brighton in 2022. But, despite clubs routinely spending big on players, they are always reluctant to land arguably the most important employee of all: the manager. ‌ Brentford have no reason to compromise on the figure while Frank also shook hands on staying for another year but that agreement would disappear if the fee is met in full. Levy has a reputation for driving a hard bargain but is unlikely to get any wriggle room this time. ‌ Tottenham have had a major clear out after sacking Ange Postecoglou on Friday, including the Aussie's backroom staff while there has been a cull on members of the club hierarchy. Technical director Johan Lange has been a notable survivor - and that is because he has strong links and a good relationship to fellow Dane Frank. It is now on Lange to land Frank as he has championed the Brentford boss to Levy and other members of the Tottenham board. Tottenham have yet to make a formal approach for Frank and other options remain a possibility, including Fulham boss Marco Silva whose buy-out is less - around £6m - and he also only has one year left on his deal at Craven Cottage. But Frank is their No1 and, while nothing is imminent, Tottenham are likely to step up their pursuit in the coming days. They see him as an ideal candidate for his style of football, he builds and improves players and will also have to scope to improve the squad ahead of a return to the Champions League. Frank is clearly interested in the potential switch having done a superb job at Brentford but his current club also want to keep him and would love him to stay. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has already ruled himself out of the running, stressing his commitment to current job with the United States. ‌ Pochettino remains a huge fan favourite but there is no chance of him coming back to the club which he led to the Champions League final in 2019. Pochettino said: 'Today it's not realistic. Look where I am. Look where we (his backroom staff) are. The answer is so clear. I think, since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumours]. "I've seen the rumours, we are 100 coaches on the list. Don't be worried about that. If something happens [in the future], you for sure will see, but I am so happy in this moment and we cannot talk about this type of thing.' ‌ Meanwhile, Tottenham have exercised the option to extend veteran defender Ben Davies' contract by another 12 months. Davies, who is 32 and is Spurs' longest-serving player after joining from Swansea City in 2014, will stay at Spurs until at least 2026 and is hoping to reach the World Cup with Wales. Versatile defender Davies has made 358 appearances in all competitions for Spurs, scoring nine goals and captaining the team 13 times. He is currently with the Wales squad preparing for Monday's World Cup qualifier in Belgium. Davies has regularly worn the captain's armband for his country in the absence of injured midfielder Aaron Ramsey and led Wales to a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein on Friday.
