After impressing with Flames, could playoffs be Adam Klapka's last stint in AHL?

Adam Klapka is re-joining the Calgary Wranglers for the rest of the playoffs.
Article content
The question, though, is really whether this will be the last time we see the towering Czech winger in the minors.
Article content
Is his time in the AHL coming to an end? After impressing down the stretch with the Calgary Flames to the point where he earned himself first-line minutes alongside Nazem Kadri in pivotal, must-win games, it sort of feels like he has established himself as a full-time NHLer.
Article content
'I had that expectation before this season, too,' Klapka said on exit day. 'When I signed the contract (last August), I wanted to be in the NHL. Of course, it takes some time, but for me, next year being full-time in the NHL is my goal and I'm going to do everything I can to be here all year.'
Article content
There's every reason to expect Klapka to be with the Flames from the start of the regular season in 2025-26. His play down the stretch removed any suspense about whether he'd be in the lineup on a night-to-night basis this season and saw him upgraded from a fourth-liner to playing top-trio minutes.

And after playing in only six games in 2023-24, he appeared in 31 contests this past season, scoring six times and adding four assists. Those numbers aren't exactly staggering, but the way he improved as the season went on was notable.

In the Flames final eight games, Klapka stepped up his offensive production, scoring three times and adding three assists while continuing to use his enormous 6-foot-8, 235-pound frame to win puck battles and throw hits.
Article content
That, as much as the points, was what impressed Flames management.
Article content
'It shows me he can do it,' Flames GM Craig Conroy said. 'There's more to Adam. The one thing I was worried about when he got onto that top-line was 'Oh, is he going to want to finish checks and do the little things that got him to move up there?' because he does have skill and he's got a nice shot.
Article content
'It's a nice thing to have, when you don't have to go find that in free agency and you've kind of home-grown it.'
Article content
That definitely sounds like the Flames are anticipating Klapka being a roster regular next season, right? An undrafted free-agent who signed with the Flames in 2022, Klapka has improved every season with the Wranglers and now looks like he's set to graduate.

'All hell breaks loose, it's a UFC fight' but Oilers are better for it

The graduation ceremony was understated to say the least. Article content There were a few curse words, some stuff got slammed, there was anger and regret, some soul-searching and a unanimous vow that they would never be taken to school like that again. Article content Article content It hurt, it was embarrassing and it was ugly to watch, but the Edmonton Oilers just earned their Masters Degree in How Not To Play The Florida Panthers. Article content They got hooked like a fat salmon in Game 3's 6-1 defeat, but at least they have a pretty good idea where it all went horribly wrong. Article content 'We have a better understanding of what needs to be done out there,' said Oilers defenceman Mattias Ekholm. 'We can't let emotions, outside effects or referees or whatever affect us. We have to stick to the process and play our game and I think good things will happen.' Article content The Oilers have been good, in the wake of humbling defeats, at looking back, learning from their mistakes and being better for it. It's a process that's already started and, from the sound of it, is soaking in quickly. Article content 'Our team is really good at reacting and answering performances like Monday night,' said Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl. 'We've always been a good team at coming back out with a strong effort. Article content 'It wasn't our best showing, not our game, but we have a great chance in two days to show what our team is all about, what we worked for all year and bring our best game.' Article content Article content What was supposed to be a day off for the Oilers on Tuesday turned into a practice, instead, which is pretty understandable after a 6-1 loss. The common theme afterward was making sure they don't fall into the same trap in Game 4 that Florida lured them into in Game 3. Article content 'That's their brand, that's what they do really well,' Ekholm said of Florida's ability to work the referees and ignite the opposition. 'But, at the same time, we've won four games against them in the finals the last two years. Article content 'You look at those games, we were a very focused group, we played our game, we didn't let that even creep in a little bit. Maybe we lost that a little last game but we know what to do.' Article content Ignore it. Be first on the aggression. Make them pay on the man advantage. Master those three things and the Oilers chop one of Florida's legs out.

Calgary Flames sign Adam Klapka to two-year contract extension

In just 37 NHL games, Adam Klapka has established himself as one of the most intriguing young players in the Calgary Flames system. Article content On Tuesday, the organization ensured they'll get to see what exactly he can become when they signed him to a two-year contract extension that will pay him US$1.25 million annually. Article content Article content It's a move that could provide excellent value. Article content The 6-foot-8, 235 lb. winger is still only scratching the surface of his potential as an NHLer — or that's the hope, at least. While he's spent most of his time since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2022 with the Calgary Wranglers in the AHL, he established himself as a regular with the Flames in the back-half of the 2024-25 season. Article content Article content In that stretch, the 24-year-old was moved from the fourth line to the Flames' top trio, playing alongside Nazem Kadri and scoring four goals while adding four assists in the team's final 10 games as they fought desperately to book a place in the NHL's post-season dance. Article content That stretch showed that Klapka could translate his AHL success — he's put up 97 points in 158 games with the Wranglers — to the NHL. As a right-shot winger, he fills a need, too, and as a self-described late bloomer, his best should be ahead of him. Article content 'There's more to Adam.
