Edisi Siasat blocked on Telegram, returns as 'Edisi Siasat 2.0' within hours
KUALA LUMPUR: The Telegram channel Edisi Siasat, which has been publishing crime-related content, was blocked in Malaysia last night.
The channel, with 1.8 million followers, was blocked after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it had obtained an interim injunction to prevent the republication of content from it and another channel, Edisi Khas.
However, another channel, Edisi Siasat 2.0, was created last night, producing content similar to Edisi Siasat.
The New Straits Times has reached out to MCMC for comment.
Yesterday, MCMC said the two channels had published content in breach of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
It said the injunction was a last resort to stop the spread of harmful content and to prevent the republication of similar material.
The commission added that this is the first action of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, specifically because Telegram holds a Class Application Service Provider (ASP(C)) licence.
The move follows Telegram's repeated failure to address content that has been reported to the platform numerous times, despite various negotiation efforts and cooperation extended by MCMC.

KUANTAN, June 20 — The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) added 59 names to its Investor Alert List in the first quarter (1Q) of this year, said chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi. He said this move is part of ongoing efforts to combat the increasingly rampant scams, alongside blocking fraudulent websites and social media pages. 'In 2024, we added 273 names to the Alert List, and in the 1Q this year, we added another 59,' he said during his opening remarks at the launch of the Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 programme. The event was officiated by Pahang Investment, Industrial Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib. Mohammad Faiz added that the SC also collaborates closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block these deceptive sites. 'Last year, we blocked 153 websites and 261 social media pages. In the 1Q, we blocked 29 websites and 91 social media pages. These numbers show how much illicit activity we are fighting daily,' he said. As of May 2025, he said, the SC had received 1,218 complaints and enquiries about scams. Mohammad Faiz also reminded the public to be cautious of scams that claim to be Shariah compliant, using religious sentiment to gain trust. Mohd Khalid Ismail appointed new IGP

The handover-of-duties ceremony took place at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol), witnessed by the Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and attended by the Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil as well as senior officers of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Advertisement Mohd Khalid, 60, has held various important positions in the PDRM Special Branch, including Chief of the Pahang Special Branch from May 25, 2018, before being appointed as the Bukit Aman Special Branch chief assistant director on Sept 6, 2021. Saifuddin Nasution in a statement today said Mohd Khalid's appointment received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia in accordance with Clauses (4) and (5) Article 140 of the Federal Constitution, upon the advice of the Prime Minister and the recommendation of the Police Force Commission. According to him, the contract appointment is for two years, starting from June 23 this year until June 22, 2027. He said Mohd Khalid was a highly experienced officer in the field of intelligence and security since he began serving in the force on April 5, 1987, when he was assigned to the Special Branch at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, after completing the General Police Training in the same year. Philippine Navy seizes US$175 million meth haul at sea

(Philippine Navy pic) MANILA: The Philippine Navy seized an illegal drug shipment worth 10 billion pesos (US$175 million) on Friday in one of the country's biggest narcotics hauls on record, officials said. A pair of naval gunboats intercepted a fishing vessel carrying 1.5 tonnes of methamphetamine hydrochloride off the coast of main island Luzon just before dawn, Commodore Edward de Sagon told a press conference. Advertisement Four people, including one foreigner, were arrested in the joint operation with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, according to de Sagon. 'We still don't have the details of where (the drugs originated),' he said, saying they believed the haul had been transferred from a larger vessel to the fishing ship. 'That was when it was intercepted. There was information and (manoeuvres) that made us suspicious,' de Sagon said. Meth, known locally as shabu, is the most prevalent illegal drug in the Philippines.
