
Rite Aids could be closing down as company eyes second bankruptcy in two years
Rite Aid stores across the country could soon be closing down as the company reportedly considers filing for its second bankruptcy in two years.
The troubled drugstore chain previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, which resulted in more than 800 store closures. Rite Aid still operates more than 1,200 stores in the U.S.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy is a form of bankruptcy under the US Bankruptcy Code that allows a debtor, typically a business or individual, to reorganize their finances and debts, rather than liquidate their assets.
According to Bloomberg, Rite Aid Corp. is now running low on cash and preparing once again to sell itself as a second bankruptcy looms. The company intends to sell individual stores and close the rest, sources told the outlet.
The Independent has reached out to Rite Aid Corp. for confirmation and comment on the reports.
Bloomberg reported in March that Rite Aid entered into talks with its creditors to access cash, following concerns over its liquidity. At that time the company agreed to meet certain financial and operational targets in addition to closing some locations.
In September 2024 Rite Aid announced that it was exiting its first bankruptcy, after closing hundreds of stores – cutting around $2 billion.
The company had been taken over by creditors and received about $2.5 billion in exit financing to support future operations, according to Bloomberg.
Local reports of closures have been ongoing for the past two years across the country, with stores shutting their doors in California, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Oregon, Washington, among others.
It comes after two other major national drugstores – Walgreens and CVS – have also come under financial pressure.
Walgreens also reportedly plans to close some 1,200 stores in the next three years and in March was acquired by private equity firm Sycamore Partners in a deal worth $23.7 billion.
CVS has said it plans to close 270 more stores in 2025, as part of a stream-lining process at the company, aiming to optimize its business model and address changing consumer needs.

'It'd been a pretty traumatic time for lots of people and she was looking for a new start,' he said. Today, the island remains every bit as magical, a captivating mix of rugged coastline, secluded bays, scenic woodland and ancient landmarks. At its heart are the atmospheric ruins of Shuna Castle, a striking early 20th-century building with panoramic coastal views. Though partially collapsed, the site holds significant redevelopment potential, subject to planning. In total, Shuna boasts eight residential properties, each with their own unique setting. The Shuna Farmhouse, a Category B listed building dating from the 1740s, later replaced Castle Shuna as the island's principal residence. To the north, the Boat House and Pier House overlook tranquil Loch Shuna, offering an idyllic welcome point for guests arriving by boat. Scattered further inland are Birchwood, The Garden House, Oakwood Cottage and The Forge, all spaced to ensure privacy and positioned to maximise the stunning natural views. At the southern tip lies the picture-perfect South End House, nestled into the hillside above a private bay. Touted as one of Scotland's most scenic holiday homes, it offers a secluded retreat with sweeping sea vistas. Anne Wojcicki to buy back 23andMe and its data for $305 million
Anne Wojcicki, the co-founder and former CEO of 23andMe, has regained control over the embattled genetic testing company after her new nonprofit, TTAM Research Institute, outbid Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, the company announced Friday. TTAM will acquire substantially all of 23andMe's assets for $305 million, including its Personal Genome Service and Research Services business lines as well as telehealth subsidiary Lemonaid Health. It's a big win for Wojcicki, who stepped down from her role as CEO when 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March. Last month, Regeneron announced it would purchase most of 23andMe's assets for $256 million after it came out on top during a bankruptcy auction. But Wojcicki submitted a separate $305 million bid through TTAM and pushed to reopen the auction. TTAM is an acronym for the first letters of 23andMe, according to The Wall Street Journal. 'I am thrilled that TTAM Research Institute will be able to continue the mission of 23andMe to help people access, understand and benefit from the human genome,' Wojcicki said in a statement. 23andMe gained popularity because of its at-home DNA testing kits that gave customers insight into their family histories and genetic profiles. The five-time CNBC Disruptor 50 company went public in 2021 via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company. At its peak, 23andMe was valued at around $6 billion. The company struggled to generate recurring revenue and stand up viable research and therapeutics businesses after going public, and it has been plagued by privacy concerns since hackers accessed the information of nearly seven million customers in 2023.

ICE preparing $45bn expansion of immigration detention facilities to meet arrest quota
Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing for a $45 billion expansion of detention facilities to meet high arrest quotas, according to a new report. The Trump administration recently ramped up ICE quotas to 3,000 arrests per day, from 1,000. The increase in ICE raids across the country and the new places agents are targeting to find and detain immigrants in the country illegally have sparked mass protests in Los Angeles and other major cities. With the increase in arrests comes the issue of housing immigrants and, according to a Bloomberg report published Friday, Trump officials are looking to tent companies, private prison operators and disaster-relief providers for a 'massive expansion' of immigration detention facilities. Last month, ICE found 41 firms to bid for business under its planned expansion, Bloomberg reports. Of those firms, at least nine have advertised 'soft-sided' facilities, which are temporary structures previously used to help ICE process immigrants along the southern border. The $45 billion ICE would use to fund the facilities is included in Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' which has passed the House but still needs to be approved by the Senate and signed by the president. It's been a week since anti-ICE protests erupted in LA following immigration raids at multiple locations. At the heart of the raids is White House aide and anti-immigration hardliner Stephen Miller, according to multiple reports. In late May, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, that the ICE arrest quota increase was delivered at a meeting led by Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Miller reportedly told federal agents to 'just go out there and arrest illegal aliens,' according to people familiar with the meeting who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. Instead of creating a list of immigrants suspected of being in the U.S. illegally, Miller said agents would target Home Depots and 7-Eleven convenience stores, the Journal reported in an article published Monday. LA has been a flashpoint in the fight between the Trump administration and Americans against his mass deportation efforts. In response to the growing protests, which have mostly been peaceful, the president deployed thousands of National Guard troops and 700 Marines in the city. The move was unprecedented and sparked backlash from California officials. California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration to stop the military deployment, and a judge ordered Trump to return control of the National Guard to Newsom. But Trump officials appealed, leading an appeals court to pause the order and set a hearing on the matter for Tuesday.
