Crash on East Coast Expressway kills two Chinese nationals, injures seven
KUANTAN, May 24 — Two Chinese nationals were killed, while another Chinese national and a local family of five were injured in an accident involving two vehicles at Kilometre 234.7 of the East Coast Expressway (LPT) heading towards Kuantan yesterday afternoon.
Kuantan police chief ACP Wan Zahari Wan Busu stated that the accident, which occurred around 2pm, involved a Mercedes-Benz and a Nissan X-Trail.
'The accident is believed to have happened when the Nissan X-Trail, travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan, suddenly lost control and crashed into the right divider before stopping in the left lane. A Mercedes-Benz coming from the same direction failed to avoid it and rear-ended the vehicle,' he said in a statement yesterday.
He said two Chinese passengers in the Mercedes-Benz died at the scene, while the car's driver hurt his right hand and suffered cuts.
Wan Zahari added that the driver of the Nissan X-Trail suffered hip injuries and was being treated in the Red Zone (critical) of Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan.
'Four other passengers, consisting of three adults and a child, were also hurt and are receiving treatment at HTAA. Two of them were admitted to Red Zone, while the other two are in Yellow Zone,' he said.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and both vehicles will undergo further inspection by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom). — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized another RM16 million worth of luxury items linked to the misuse of sukuk funds for the construction of a highway in Klang Valley believed to be owned by a concession holder with the title of Tan Sri yesterday. The MACC said the seizure at the individual's residence in Bandar Tasik Selatan, Cheras included 84 luxury bags worth about RM3 million, 11 branded watches (about RM1 million), gold bars, coins and statues (about RM3 million), diamonds and jewellery (about RM4 million). 'A luxury casino equipment set estimated to be worth RM150,000 was also seized,' the commission said in a statement, adding that a secret vault that stored weapons and ammunition was discovered but the weapons were not seized as they were registered under the security company the individual owned. An Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS) conducted the search of the individual's residence as he was suspected to be keeping weapons in the vault. 'The MACC received information that there was a vault storing valuables, including weapons, linked to the case in his residence. 'The presence of the ACTS team was to ensure safety and to escort officers and seized items back to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya,' the commission added. Meanwhile, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the search and seizure and did not deny the possibility that there would be other seizures linked to the case. He said that the process of taking the individual's statement had to be postponed to a later date due to health factors. Teacher claims trial to sexually abusing 14-year-old girl in car

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A secondary school teacher in Tampin, Negeri Sembilan, has claimed trial to a charge of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl in a car last month. Asyraf Ahmad, 36, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before Seremban sessions court judge Surita Budin. According to the charge, framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, Asyraf is accused of sexually abusing the teenager physically, Sinar Harian reported. The offence was allegedly committed inside a car at KM242.1 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) between 9am and 9.20am on May 17. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in jail and whipping. Deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni proposed bail of RM20,000 in one surety, along with additional conditions; for the accused to report to the police monthly and not to contact the victim or prosecution witnesses. Asyraf, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail amount, citing financial responsibilities, including caring for his two children and elderly parents who are in poor health, as well as other commitments. The court allowed him bail of RM12,000 in one surety and set July 15 for mention.

Comms minister: Facebook raked in RM85b Asean ad revenue but still behind on scams, gambling controls
PUTRAJAYA, June 13 — Social media platform Facebook is estimated to have generated between US$15 billion (RM63.68 billion) and US$20 billion (RM84.91 billion) in online advertising revenue in the Asean region last year, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the figure included advertisements suspected of promoting scams and online gambling to about 670 million users of the platform in the region. In Malaysia alone, Fahmi said Facebook generated an estimated RM2.5 billion in revenue last year. 'This is the problem we face — many of the ads they (Facebook) display are scam ads promoting fake investments or so-called 'magical' products that can be bought at very low prices. There's no control over this. 'In fact, just a few weeks ago, my team identified drug and vape (electronic cigarette) sales activities within Facebook groups,' he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly yesterday. Fahmi said that to date, Facebook had yet to cooperate with the government's social media platform licensing initiative enforced earlier this year. 'They (Facebook) still refuse to be licensed under the licensing system we announced. They are unwilling to cooperate in several areas,' he said. On January 1, the government officially enforced licensing under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), aimed at enhancing online safety, protecting users, and strengthening regulatory oversight of internet messaging service providers and social media platforms. The government's efforts did not stop there, as Parliament passed the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 last December, which will be enforced soon. 'With the enforcement of OnSA, social media platforms like Facebook will be required to comply. 'Issues such as paedophile groups and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) must be eliminated from these platforms, and those involved must be brought to justice,' he said. — Bernama
