Southeast Asian masterpieces up for auction in Bangsar this Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR: A collection of significant works by some of Southeast Asia's most prominent modern and contemporary artists will go under the hammer this Saturday at KL Lifestyle Art Space (Klas), Bangsar.
In a statement, Klas said the auction, scheduled for June 14 at 1pm, will feature a curated selection of paintings that trace the artistic evolution of the region, from figurative modernism to abstraction and conceptual forms.
Among the highlights is Green Landscape II (2019) by renowned Malaysian artist Abdul Latiff Mohidin, with an estimated price range of RM600,000 to RM900,000.
The piece, characterised by lush greens and earth tones, is from the artist's later period and reflects his signature blend of landscape and spiritual abstraction. It was previously exhibited at Latiff Mohidin: Modern Figurations and the Landscape Within in 2021.
Also featured is Aqueous Waves (1984) by Singaporean modernist Anthony Poon, known for his optical and geometric compositions. This particular work, valued between RM350,000 and RM450,000, was formerly part of Duke University's permanent art collection. A similar piece is held by Singapore's National Heritage Board.
The auction also includes Nightwalkers II (2005) from Yusof Ghani's Segerak series (RM60,000 – RM110,000), known for its expressive portrayal of movement and identity, and Memories V by Khalil Ibrahim (RM75,000 – RM150,000), a batik work reflecting the tranquil rhythm of Malaysia's East Coast.
Other noteworthy pieces include Fishes on the Rack (1962) by Long Thien Shih, a reflection of rural life through the lens of social realism, and Arca Merah (2024) by Awang Damit Ahmad, regarded as a continuation of his celebrated Essence of Culture (EOC) series.
The auction offers art collectors a rare opportunity to acquire museum-quality works seldom seen on the market, many of which represent pivotal moments in the artists' careers.

[Watch] Malaysian Influencer Hits Rock Bottom, Becomes Lalamove Driver To Get Back On Track

Subscribe to our FREE A Malaysian influencer, Tommy Kuan from ' And he's not ashamed about it. The popular food vlogger, known for his humorous and engaging style, hit a brutal low in late 2024. Nothing was working. Pitches got ignored. Creative ideas fell flat. He stopped filming entirely and spent days rotting at home, watching his bank account drain. Kuan said in a recent video that he was doing everything wrong. I realized if I kept this up, I'd run out of money and my mental health would tank. Getting Back Behind the Wheel So, he did something practical: he applied to drive for the delivery app Lalamove. He likes driving anyway, and it beats sitting around being useless. The gig worked – spending hours alone in his car, delivering stuff around town, helped clear his head. The routine got him out of the house, while the small but steady income kept him afloat, but most importantly, it gave him time to think. Some things started making sense again. Inspiration came back. Now work is trickling back in. Kuan, who has a background in acting, only delivers a couple of days a week because other projects are picking up. From Viral to Vindicated The video about his delivery stint blew up online, with fans cheering him on. Some cynics accused him of making a sponsored ad for Lalamove, but Kuan shut that down quickly. I'm a small-time guy. Lalamove wouldn't come to me for advertising. He stressed he wasn't looking for pity—just sharing how he climbed out of a hole. The lesson? Sometimes the best way forward is to take any job that pays while you figure out what's next. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . Lim gained international recognition and became a familiar face on British and Malaysian television for her role as Chung Su-Lee in Mind Your Language, a popular British comedy that aired in the late 1970s. Born in Penang in 1944, Lim's birth name was romanised as Lim Phaik-Seng, but she later changed her given name to Pik-Sen after noticing that her British friends frequently mispronounced 'Phaik' as 'fake.' She starred in Doctor Who, playing Chin Lee in The Mind of Evil (1971), and appeared in British series such as military drama Spearhead, Coronation Street, Casualty, Holby City and The Bill. Her film credits include Johnny English Reborn (2011), in which she played the Killer Cleaner. More recently, she was the narrator in the Dark Souls video game series and appeared in American TV series Vampire Academy (2022) and The Nevers (2023). The British Film Institute described Lim as 'the most recognisable Chinese actor on British television throughout the 1970s and 80s'. She was fondly remembered by fellow actor Daniel Y Loh in a heartfelt tribute on Facebook. 'I acted on stage in two plays with her as well as numerous readings, workshops, audio etc as well,' Loh wrote. 'A joyous person, full of love and laughter and mischief, she was so much fun to be around and her gift for comedy was such that you always felt safe in front of an audience with her, that absolutely unique voice and vivacious energy carrying us all with her.' Loh recalled their time working together on several productions, including Citizens of Nowhere?, which they performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival the summer before the Covid-19 pandemic. They also shared the stage in a production of Romeo & Juliet, where he played Mercutio opposite Lim's Nurse. 'We've shared the same agent for the last 25 odd years and she'll be hugely missed there as well,' he wrote. – Malay Mail actress died Malaysian Mind Your Language passed away Pik-Sen Lim
