Two hurt as part of Fatehnagar flyover staircase collapses
HYDERABAD: Two people sustained minor injuries after a portion of the over-three-decade-old pedestrian staircase attached to the Fatehnagar flyover collapsed in Sanathnagar on Monday. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.
According to local authorities, the staircase, already in a bad condition, suddenly collapsed, causing panic among passersby. The two pedestrians on the staircase at the time sustained injuries.
Upon learning of the incident, Sanathnagar police rushed to the spot. They suspect that absorption of rainwater may have weakened the structure, leading to the collapse. HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected the site on Tuesday morning.
Locals informed the commissioner that a fair is held in Sanathnagar every Sunday, drawing hundreds of visitors who use the stairs.
Ranganath noted that it was unsafe to continue using such a dilapidated structure and ordered its immediate removal. Following this, HYDRAA personnel used a JCB to demolish the stairs.
The commissioner also directed HYDRAA officials to get all such structures across the city assessed by experts from the Civil Engineering department and remove any deemed unsafe.

3 loan recovery agents held for ‘illegally giving farmer's JCB to dowry death accused Shashank Hagawane'
The Pimpri Chinchwad police on Thursday arrested three loan recovery agents in connection with the offence lodged against Vaishnavi Hagawane's husband, Shashank, and mother-in-law, Lata, for allegedly cheating and threatening a farmer at gunpoint. The Hagawane family hit the headlines last month after Vaishnavi, the daughter-in-law of expelled Nationalist Congress Party leader Rajendra Hagawane, allegedly died by suicide following harassment over dowry. Shashank and Lata were arrested after Prashant Yelwande, a farmer from Nigoje village in Khed taluka of Pune district, lodged a First Information Report at the Mahalunge MIDC police station in Pimpri Chinchwad on May 29. The duo were remanded to police custody till June 6 for further investigation. The police identified the accused arrested on Thursday as Yogesh Rajendra Raskar, 25, Ganesh Potle, 30, and Vaibhav Pingle, 27, of Talegaon Dhamdhere. According to the police, Yelwande had purchased a JCB from Shashank and Lata for Rs 24 lakh in March 2022. There was a bank loan of about Rs 19 lakh on the said machine, and Yelwande paid Rs 5 lakh and took possession of it, the police added. It was allegedly decided that he should further pay Rs 50,000 per month to the Hagawanes for repaying the loan. The police said Yelwande paid Rs 6.7 lakh to Shashank and Lata, but they did not deposit the money in the bank for loan repayment. Shivaji Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pimpri Chinchwad, said that the legal manager of the bank had not given any instructions to the recovery agency for taking away the JCB from Yelwande. 'But still, the accused Raskar, Potle and Pingle, working for the private recovery agency, illegally took the JCB from Yelwande and gave it to Shashank Hagawane around August 2024. So we have placed the three persons under arrest,' he added. According to the police, after the JCB was taken away from him, Yelwande demanded his money, around Rs 11.7 lakh, from the Hagawane family. But Shashank allegedly threatened him at gunpoint. The police had earlier arrested Shashank, Lata and others from the Hagawane family for the alleged dowry death of his wife Vaishnavi at their residence in Bhukum. Vaishnavi's father Anil Kaspate had lodged an FIR in this case at the Bavdhan police station in Pimpri Chinchwad on May 17, alleging that Vaishnavi's in-laws had been abusing her, mentally and physically, demanding Rs 2 crore to purchase a property. Kaspate also said in the FIR that there were injury marks on Vaishnavi's body, alleging that this suggested physical abuse, adding that he feared that his daughter had been murdered.

Garbage buried in Kasol forest after viral video of waste triggers outrage
The waste management crisis near the wildlife sanctuary area of Kasol in Himachal Pradesh sparked heated debate recently after a video of widespread litter went viral. Authorities responded by deploying JCBs and other machinery to clear the garbage. However, the waste was hastily buried by digging pits nearly 2 km inside the forest, an act that blatantly violates environmental laws and video showed garbage and waste from the past eight months -- originating from Kullu, Kasol, and nearby villages, including from hotels and residential areas -- lying openly dumped in the middle of the Parvati Valley forest, a popular international tourist response to the public outcry, the Special Area Development Authority (SADA), led by local Congress MLA Sunder Thakur, deployed tippers and JCB machines to the site. However, instead of treating the waste, it was removed from its original location and dumped deep within a demarcated wildlife sanctuary zone. India Today's ground report revealed a significant disconnect between official claims of cleanliness and the reality on the ground. The truck and JCB operators were seen fleeing the scene upon the arrival of camera crews, with one driver admitting to dumping waste on the instructions of 'Pradhan Tehal Singh' and covering it with Sood, a local activist and hotel owner, criticised the government's negligence, stating that despite SADA collecting Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per month from every hotel owner for waste management, they have failed to provide a viable pointed out that dumping began even before an official site was established, and authorities waited for months for the waste to accumulate to this extent before resorting to burying it. "This is clear negligence by the government. There are 400-500 hotels in Kasol itself waste in nature, but treatment and a way out of it is what is required. Dumping started even before the official dumping site was established. This area falls under SADA, which collects Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per month from every hotel owner for waste management. Despite collecting funds, they're only spreading pollution instead of managing it responsibly," Aman Sood leader Nirotam Thakur threatened to file a complaint with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), noting the irony of city waste being dumped in the forest, unlike the usual practice of bringing forest waste into urban areas."We will file a complaint with the NGT (National Green Tribunal). Locals had earlier approached the DC (District Commissioner), but they were dismissed. Usually, people bring forest waste into the city, here in Kasol, it's the opposite: city waste is being dumped in the heart of the forest," Thakur added. However, the Development Authority Chairman and local MLA Thakur, when contacted, attributed the delay to waiting for permission for a dumping site and claimed to have exchanged land with the Rural Development Department for this purpose."We got delayed because we were waiting for permission for a dumping site. We have exchanged land with the Rural Development Department, and now we will develop a dumping site there. We've also received MRF (Material Recovery Facility) approval to store the waste temporarily in the jungle," he said, also asking, 'Where else could we take our waste?"Despite SADA's responsibility for waste treatment and management, funded by a "green/SADA tax" of Rs 300 per vehicle entering Kasol and monthly fees from hotels and shops, it has failed to establish a proper dumping pointed out that the practice of openly accumulating waste for months and then burying it inside a wildlife sanctuary under public scrutiny is a clear violation of wildlife conservation, environmental protection, and waste management Watch
