
Prehistoric puke reveals hunting (and hurling) habits of ancient ocean predators
What is 66-million-year-old vomit like? A lot more pleasant than the fresh stuff, says paleontologist Jesper Milan.
"It doesn't smell anymore," he told told As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal. "It doesn't look disgusting at all."
That's good news for the patrons of Denmark's East Zealand Museum, where Milan is a curator, and where the preserved puke of a prehistoric ocean predator will soon be displayed.
Discovered by a private fossil hunter on a historic coastal cliff in Denmark, Milan says it offers a rare glimpse into the hunting habits of sea creatures in the Cretaceous period.
'Oh, this could be vomit'
When Milan first laid eyes on the fossil, which is about 3.5 centimetres in diametre, he says it didn't look like much at all.
But as museum staff dusted it off and cleaned it up, they revealed the skeletal remains of two crinoids — small, tentacled marine invertebrates, better known as sea lilies — coiled together in a pellet.
"That's when we started to think … oh, this could be vomit," Milan said.
That's great news to a paleontologist, because vomit offers clues about ancient ecosystems — namely who was eating what and when.
But it's also hard to come by.
"Normally, vomit is mostly soft things that don't get fossilized," Milan said. "It must have got buried in the seafloor quite fast."
The scientific name for fossilized vomit is regurgitalite.
"They're really rare, and they're really important," Russell Bicknell, a paleobiologist at the American Museum of Natural History who was not involved in the Danish discovery, told CBC.

Regurgitalites, Bicknell says, are a sub-category of bromalites, which are fossilized digestive materials.
There are also colonites, food preserved in intestines, and perhaps the most popular of them all, coprolites, a.k.a. fossilized feces.
Bicknell also studies ancient ocean predators, but with a focus on the Cambrian period, between 538 and 485 million years ago, which had excellent geological conditions for fossil preservation.
For the Cretaceous period, he says, bromalites are more rare. And this one dates to a period just before the mass extinction event that killed off the dinosaurs.
"It's from the period just before the meteorite hit the Earth," he said. "That's really exciting."
What did the puking?
So far, scientists don't know what actually did the puking. It may have been a fish, or a marine reptile, gobbling up sea lillies along the bottom of the ocean.
Sea lilies, which predate dinosaurs and still live on the ocean's floors today, have skeletons are made of mineral calcite, which explains why they were so well-preserved in the regurgitalite.
Their skeletons consist of hundreds of individual plates of different shapes and sizes, which could explain why they didn't go down very well.
"There's not many animals that like to eat things that are particularly spiky or shelly," Bicknell said. "Either this particular animal really enjoyed this kind of food, which is interesting, or maybe there was kind of a limitation on what could have been eaten at the time in that environment, so it was kind of limited to the more, you know, crunchier."
Milan has some theories.
"You have a few possibilities, but my main suspect is one of the small bottom dwelling-sharks that are still alive today," he said.
"Bullhead sharks, or the Port Jackson Shark, they feed on the sea starfish and sea urchins and mussels and crayfish and a lot of things with hard shells. And you find the fossilized teeth from that kind of shark in the same deposit as as the vomit."
Whatever barfed out the sea lilies, Milan says he's grateful for the international attention they're receiving, and for Peter Bennicke, the 79-year-old fossil hunter who found the prehistoric puke.
He says roughly two thirds of fossils on the record in his country come from amateur fossil hunters, and he encourages them to keep doing what they're doing.
"They are doing a great job in Denmark," he said.

2 new species of crayfish identified in Pacific Northwest — and they're already at risk
Social Sharing Two new species of crayfish have been identified in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, and researchers say both species are vulnerable to extinction. One of those crayfish is called the "misfortunate crayfish," found primarily in central Oregon, according to biologist Eric Larson. The other, the Okanagan crayfish, is found in, well, B.C.'s Okanagan Lake. Both were previously mistaken for the signal crayfish, the most common species of crayfish on the West Coast, Larson said. "They are brand new species. It's the first time anyone has called this animal the Okanagan crayfish," Larson told CBC's Daybreak South host Chris Walker. The easiest way to differentiate the signal variety from the other two is a distinctive white mark on the signal crayfish's claw. "If you find that absent or really reduced, that might suggest you're looking at the Okanagan crayfish," Larson said. Eric Taylor, a professor of zoology at the University of British Columbia, said it's important to identify different species, even if they appear very similar, for several reasons. "There's sort of an inherent value in knowing," he said. "Humans like to know about the world around us, which includes the natural world, so it's important for an accurate understanding of the level of biodiversity we have." Additionally, it helps researchers better understand the ecosystem in which these species live. Thirdly, identifying individual species gives conservationists an idea of how widespread the species is. For example, Taylor said, there could be a stronger effort to protect a species if it's only found in one small area, as opposed to across a region. At risk of extinction Okanagan and misfortunate crayfish are already considered at risk of extinction, according to Larson. Taylor said this is no surprise, given that these are smaller groups of what was once thought to be a larger population. "The smaller an area an animal or plant lives in, the greater the chance that if something bad happens, it's going to go extinct," he said. The Okanagan crayfish is of particular concern, Taylor said, because it's located in Okanagan Lake — an area of "high human impact." Larson hopes the situation will inspire conservation action. "Crayfish don't get along that well," he said. "We have moved crayfish around for centuries," Larson added, pointing to stocking lakes with crayfish, using them as bait and even classrooms releasing them into the wild. They can also catch a ride to a new location on boats, similar to invasive mussels. Larson said that, in particular, scientists worry Okanagan crayfish will be displaced by invasive virile crayfish, while misfortunate crayfish could disappear due to invasive rusty crayfish. That's a much bigger risk for the misfortunate crayfish in Oregon that has the rusty crayfish from eastern North America spreading really rapidly in its native range. But for the Okanagan crayfish, we kind of wanted to discourage movement of other crayfish into its populations. Not only can invasive species be harmful to those native to the Pacific Northwest, they also feed on fish eggs and destroy aquatic plants, Larson said, as well as damage infrastructure like irrigation canals and dams. Invasive crayfish can also carry disease, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Antarctic treaty under stress as member countries gather in Italy
Social Sharing For 65 years, an international treaty forged at the height of the Cold War has governed Antarctica. But with rising geopolitical tensions, consensus is increasingly hard to find. "Up until just a few years ago, we talked about the Antarctic Treaty as a framework for peace and stability in the Antarctic region, and the Arctic as a place of relative stability," said David Hik, chief scientist at Polar Knowledge Canada, an agency focused on strengthening polar science and technology in Canada. "Now, both of those assumptions are being challenged." Fifty-eight countries, including Canada, are signatories to the Antarctic Treaty, which preserves the continent for scientific exploration and peace, and bans military and mining activity. But only half the signatories can vote on treaty business. Canada wants to secure voting rights as a so-called consultative party, and will make its case again at the Antarctic Treaty meeting in Milan, Italy, later this month. But there have been barriers to this. "Canada's claim to be a consultative party has been blocked, first and foremost, by Russia," said Klaus Dodds, a political biographer and Antarctic expert at Royal Holloway, University of London. Antarctica's ancient glaciers are receding and sea ice reached near-record lows this year, both of which contribute to rising global sea levels. "The Antarctic ice sheet contains enormous amounts of fresh water, and as the ice sheet thins and melts in places, calves at faster rates, that's going to affect global sea level change," said Thomas James, chief scientist on the CARE 2025 mission. As an Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV), it is designed to break through new ice up to a metre thick. But with rapidly changing weather patterns, the ice moves and shifts, so that an open channel one day can be clogged with ice the next. An ice specialist from the Canadian Coast Guard, Donavan Tremblay, and an officer with the Chilean Navy, Javier Idiaquez, travelled with the Margaret Brooke crew to help chart a safe path. Even so, there were unexpected blockages, and navigating at night presented even more challenges. En route to Rothera Point beyond the Antarctic Circle, as the weather deteriorated and the ice encroached, Cmdr. Teri Share had to make a decision about whether to proceed. "It was a heightened level, absolutely," Share told CBC News from the captain's quarters on the Margaret Brooke. "We can take all the precautions that we can take. We can use all of the information that is provided to us. But still, there comes a point that it's on me as the commanding officer to say yes or no." In the end, Share made the call to push further south, with the crew threading the vessel through icebergs and sheet ice to reach Rothera Point, the ship's final destination, and the most southerly point the Canadian Navy had ever travelled. "It feels like just yesterday you and I were on the bridge, and you were asking me what [is the Navy] going to be doing down there, and what was I excited about," Share told the CBC's Susan Ormiston. "It's gone by really quickly," Share said, reflecting on the historic mission.
