Edmunds: The best SUVs for under $30,000, ranked
Just about every automaker these days offers an entry-level SUV. Though they are smaller than the most popular SUVs, such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, their appeal is obvious. They are affordable, good on gas, and are easy to drive and park. They also provide many of the attributes shoppers love about SUVs, such as a more commanding view of the road than a sedan offers and available all-wheel drive for extra traction on icy or snowy roads.
But which one should you get? Edmunds' team of automotive experts have undertaken thousands of miles of testing in order to provide a ranked list of the five best SUVs under $30,000. They're ordered below based on Edmunds' testing and rankings. All of the following prices include destination charges.
Nissan Kicks
Redesigned for the 2025 model year, the Nissan Kicks has gone from being a forgettable wallflower to a small SUV extrovert. Based on design alone, the new Kicks is a major step forward from its predecessor. For the first time, all-wheel drive is optional on Nissan's smallest and least expensive SUV. All three available trims — S, SV, SR — easily fall under Edmunds' budget cap of $30,000. The top SR trim is a particularly impressive value thanks to its big display screens and many standard driver assist features. Edmunds discovered a few downsides in the newly stylish Kick, such as tepid acceleration and disappointing real-world fuel economy. But overall the Kicks is a great way to spend a little and get a lot.
2025 Nissan Kicks starting price: $23,220
Honda HR-V
Honda knows a thing or two about building easy-to-drive and comfortable SUVs. The compact CR-V is hugely popular, and its smaller sibling, the HR-V, is similarly appealing. This choice is especially appealing if space is a priority for you. The HR-V has a big cargo area for this size of SUV, and headroom and legroom for rear passengers are generous. We also like the HR-V's upscale interior design and competitive value for what you're paying. The main downside to the HR-V is its lack of power. You'll need some patience for passing and getting up to speed on the highway.

Buick Envista
The sleek and stylish Envista could get fashion-conscious SUV shoppers into a Buick dealership for the first time. It's one of the more head-turning shapes among small SUVs, yet Edmunds' testers found the Envista is much more than a pretty face. The Envista is longer than most of its rivals, and that contributes to adult-friendly legroom in either row. A sizable and intuitive-to-use 11-inch touchscreen is standard. But be aware that the Envista's tapering roofline does take a bite out of cargo volume. Also, all-wheel drive isn't available.

Chevrolet Trax
Edmunds found the small size and light weight of the Trax make it genuinely entertaining to drive. The handling is precise and, while it's no road rocket, acceleration is above par among subcompact SUVs. It's also fuel-efficient. Just keep in mind, like the Envista, all-wheel drive is not available. The Trax delivers big on passenger space, cargo volume and value. The trunk is roomy, and even the base trim comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, automatic high beams, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

2025 Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona sits at the top of Edmunds' rankings for extra-small SUVs. Edmunds singled out the Kona's roomy and modern-looking interior for praise, especially when it is optioned with the available 12.3-inch digital instrument panel mounted alongside the standard 12.3-inch touchscreen. Every Kona also comes standard with many driver assist features such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning. One negative: The Kona's upper trims, though impressively equipped, nudge against or exceed our $30,000 pricing barrier. Also, Edmunds noted the soft and springy suspension takes some fun out of piloting the otherwise overachieving Kona.

When it comes to how they drive and the features they offer, small SUVs have grown up a lot in the past few years. Some stand taller than others thanks to their blend of pricing, driving dynamics, interior space and efficiency. In this instance, the versatile Hyundai Kona emerges as the winner.

NHTSA closes engineering analysis on more than 2 million Nissan vehicles
June 18 (Reuters) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Wednesday it had closed an engineering analysis on 2,038,307 Nissan Motor (7201.T), opens new tab vehicles over issues related to rear suspension control arm failure. The investigation, which covered 2013-2018 Nissan Altima and 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima vehicles, looked into whether the lower control arm of the rear suspension system may separate from the chassis due to corrosion, NHTSA said. "Nissan acknowledges that a crack can develop in affected control arms due to stress loading from normal use and that salts commonly used for roadway snow and ice treatment may result in corrosion that exacerbates the progression of the crack," the agency added. The U.S. auto safety regulator said Nissan implemented a design change in January 2018 to improve the durability of the lower control arm. Some affected vehicles have been repaired with the countermeasure part under a customer satisfaction campaign, while some were provided a warranty extension to 10 years or unlimited mileage from three years or 36,000 miles. "With a declining trend of reports and Nissan's actions to implement a countermeasure and extended warranty coverage, further investigation of the issue does not appear to be warranted at this time," NHTSA said.

'America's worst road' has pot holes that are a FOOT deep, with mail carriers now refusing to drive down it
Residents on a Louisiana road are being plagued by 'dangerous' potholes so deep postal workers are refusing to deliver their mail. Locals in St. Landry Parish say they are having to swerve to avoid the massive potholes, which measure up to three feet wide and one foot deep. Matthew and Jessica Roberts, who live on Copper Road, have been complaining about the bumpy stretch of roadway 'since before COVID.' 'This is dangerous,' Jessica told KATC. 'Frustrated is the biggest word for us because we have tried all avenues when it comes to getting it fixed.' The couple are afraid for the safety of their two teenage children, who are new drivers and they have had to spend money repairing their vehicles because of the road's sorry state. 'When you drive on it, you have to weave back and forth,' Matthew added. The family said that Copper Road is in such poor condition that postal workers have stopped delivering mail to their home. 'The road is so bad, we were told that it's damaging the mail trucks, so our mail doesn't get delivered,' Matthew said. Jessie Bellard, the president of St. Landry Parish, told KATC he wasn't aware that residents living on Copper Road weren't getting their mail. Bellard, who has been parish president since August 2020, explained that in situations like this, the post office usually notifies his office. He claimed he did not receive a call. The US Postal Service confirmed that its drivers had been instructed not to drive down Copper Road to not risk their safety. However, service was resumed on Tuesday after temporary fixes were made to the road. The couple said that crews poured fresh asphalt into potholes that day, but argued that wasn't enough. Matthew pointed out one of the temporary patches and demonstrated how inadequate it was by putting his foot into it. The asphalt gave way immediately. 'If I step on it, it moves. A car just pushes that right out. That's what they fixed this morning,' he said. Even before this quick fix from the parish, Matthew said local officials have repeatedly claimed they'd get the road back to working order, only to do nothing. 'Honestly, the worst thing for us is that they say they fix it or they say they're gonna come out and fix it, they don't, and they put on a work order online that they've surveyed it and fixed it. They haven't done anything,' he said. In an interview, Bellard acknowledged that Copper Road, 'has been like this for a while.'. Bellard said this project will take two days to complete and cost roughly $89,000 'We patched it, and of course, it don't hold. It's an old road,' he said. Bellard said he is aware of the complaints from residents and plans to take permanent action - as soon as the rain stops. 'Last month in this area, we had 6.8 inches of rain,' he said, claiming the delay to fixing Copper Road was due to weather. 'And I am not going to do any overlay in the rain, nor with the threat of more rain,' he said. He said this project will take two days to complete and cost roughly $89,000. Matthew and Jessica are so sick of waiting that they now plan to move away, pointing out that they pay their taxes to the parish and their road hasn't been fixed for years. 'We have been just getting the full runaround, and we are appreciative but it's the length of time we had to wait for this,' Jessica said. The Daily Mail has contacted the Public Works Department of St Landry Parish for comment.
