‘Extinction crisis' could see 500 bird species vanish within a century

More than 500 bird species could vanish within the next century, researchers have found, calling for urgent 'special recovery programmes' such as captive breeding and habitat restoration to rescue unique species.
Birds such as the puffin, European turtle dove and great bustard will be among those to disappear from our skies if trends continue, according to the paper. Their loss threatens to unravel ecosystems across the globe.
'We face a bird extinction crisis unprecedented in modern times,' said Kerry Stewart, lead author of the research from the University of Reading, who described the headline finding of the paper as a 'shocking statistic'. It is triple the number of birds that went extinct in the previous 500 years.
The paper, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, examined data from nearly 10,000 birds (almost all of those known to exist) and used IUCN data to predict extinction risk. Habitat loss – driven mainly by the expansion and intensification of agriculture – emerged as the most significant driver of species extinction.
But even if habitat loss, hunting and climate breakdown stopped today, about 250 species could still die out, as they are already teetering on the brink of extinction. Local conservation efforts may feel small but they are essential to save a species from going extinct, the researchers found. 'Many birds are already so threatened that reducing human impacts alone won't save them. These species need special recovery programmes, like breeding projects and habitat restoration, to survive,' said Stewart.
Conservation success stories show it is possible to bring species back from the brink of extinction.
By 1987, the California condor – North America's largest bird – had gone extinct in the wild. There were about 22 birds in captivity, which were then bred and released; now there is a population of 350 in the wild.
In the UK, the bittern – a shy-reed-dwelling bird – went extinct as a breeding bird in the 1870s because its wetland habitat had been drained for farming. Now, thanks to habitat restoration, their population is at its highest in more than 200 years, with more than 280 booming male bitterns recorded last year.
Prof Manuela González-Suárez, senior author of the study at the University of Reading, said: 'Stopping threats is not enough. As many as 250-350 species will require complementary conservation measures … to survive the next century.'
The latest State of the World's Birds report found nearly half of the planet's bird species are in decline. Habitat loss, logging, invasive species, exploitation of natural resources and climate breakdown were highlighted as the main threats.
'There is no magic bullet for solving the extinction crisis,' said Stuart Butchart, chief scientist at BirdLife International, who was not involved in the research. 'Protected areas can play a key role, while abating threats from agriculture, logging, fisheries, hunting and other sources is essential. However, some species require targeted recovery efforts, involving interventions like captive breeding and release, translocation, or supplementary feeding, to overcome barriers to recovery.
'This paper adds to a growing body of evidence showing that actions across the whole framework will be necessary to stop human actions from driving species extinct.'

An archaeological dig has uncovered an ancient burial ground underneath popular playing fields in Cardiff. Volunteers at a heritage project excavation said they found a number of pits at Trelai Park near Caerau Hillfort, with at least three holding a small amount of cremated human remains. The remains, which date back to the Bronze Age, were found next to a roundhouse previously discovered by the project which was said to potentially be the earliest house found in Oliver Davis, Caerau and Ely Rediscovering (CAER) Heritage Project co-director, said the discovery was "hugely exciting" and provided a window into the lives of Cardiff residents from over 3,000 years ago. "The fact that the cremations have been buried so close to the roundhouse suggests they may have been laid there to remember cherished family members," he said."It could also mean the site held a ceremonial significance to people at the time." The fourth phase of the project's archaeological investigation also discovered a new structure next to the roundhouse previously found. It was next to the foundations of this smaller building where the pits were located, along with evidence of a timber circle further down which experts believe may date to the Early Bronze Age around 2000-1600 are now working to piece together the significance of the latest finds, which suggest the site could be more expansive than previously Davis said: "The smaller structure we have found sits very near to the original roundhouses we discovered in 2023, these structures were luxurious and spacious."He added the smaller structure could be an additional house for another family, or maybe an ancillary building used for preparing food and craft-working. Trelai Park is a well-used location for sports teams and dog walkers and is half a mile from Caerau Hillfort, a heritage site of national significance. Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman and medieval finds have all previously been discovered by archaeologists at the site. Dr Davis said the area, which was only 650 ft (200m) away from a Roman Villa, had been an important place over thousands of years. "It's providing us with a window onto some of the very earliest Cardiff residents who were living here in Caerau and Ely over three millennia ago," he said. "The work now begins to carefully dig through each layer, sifting through the materials we are finding here on an hourly basis. It's a real team effort." Volunteer Hannah Secker, 19, from Grangetown, has finished her A Levels and wants to study archaeology and ancient history at degree said: "It's unbelievable finding artefacts that could be 3,000 years old and thinking about the people that have walked on this ground before us."Dan Queally is due to graduate from Cardiff University with a BA in archaeology and chose to do his dissertation on the CAER project. "It's not just about the archaeology that I've learned about, it's about seeing the difference a project like this can make to people here and now," he said. "It's been a big perspective shift for me." According to Dr David Wyatt, CAER co-director, the finds from Trelai Park "just keep coming". "It's not difficult to argue that Trelai could be one of the most important parks for heritage in south Wales," he said. "It really has all the potential to be a popular and thriving tourist attraction which could hugely benefit the local communities."Mike Tate, headteacher of Cardiff West Community High School metres away from the site, said the school saw real value in its links to the project. "Our pupils learn about the history of the area in which they live and they, literally, get their hands on the past."

Children suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) – a rare but debilitating genetic condition – are being denied a simple test at birth which could give them the chance of a normal life. Every month in the UK, four babies are born with SMA. If left undiagnosed and untreated, many children with the most common form of SMA, type 1, do not live beyond their second birthday. Yet a test for the condition is not included in the newborn national screening programme – unlike in many other countries, including Ukraine, which introduced the test during the war against Russia. And having that test early on can be vital, as there are now treatments, including a gene therapy, which can halt the disease progression. Professor Giovanni Baranello, Professor of Paediatric Neuromuscular Disorders at Great Ormond Street Hospital, told us that with the treatment, babies will go on to have a normal life: 'They will not develop symptoms, he said. 'So we can basically revert, you know, the progression and natural course of the condition.' SMA causes muscle weakness, breathing and swallowing. Sebastian Stezaly was diagnosed at four months, simply because his mother suspected something was wrong and insisted he was tested, which they had done privately. He began treatment at five months but he had already lost muscle use in his legs and his speech was affected. All for the lack of the newborn test, which could be included in the heel prick test given to all babies at five days old. In 2018 the UK National Screening Committee decided not to recommend to the government that it should add SMA to the national screening programme. Two years ago, they said they would launch an in-service evaluation to gather further evidence. A call for people to take part in the research is underway and the Department of Health says it's working closely with families and campaigners – but it wouldn't say why there has been a delay nor why this evaluation which was once UK-wide, has now been scaled back to just 60 percent of England alone. Working to lose weight in your 40s and 50s may help to reduce your risk of developing a chronic disease, a new study reveals. Researchers based in the U.K. and Finland say they found health benefits in people who lost an average of 6.5 percent of their body weight in early middle age and maintained that weight loss throughout a period of 12 to 35 years. Those benefits especially include a lessened risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as an overall lower risk of death from chronic disease. 'The benefits of lifestyle-based weight management are widely discussed even though studies have found it surprisingly difficult to demonstrate health benefits beyond the prevention of diabetes,' University of Helsinki professor Dr. Timo Strandberg said in a statement. Strandberg was the lead author of the study which was published recently in the journal JAMA Network Open, the open-access journal of the American Medical Association. To reach these conclusions, the study tracked and analyzed the health of 23,000 white Europeans who were between the ages of 30 and 50 years old using data from three studies, conducted from 1985 to 1988, from 1964 to 1973, and between 2000 and 2013. They sorted the participants into four groups: people with persistent healthy weight, people who were overweight but became a healthy weight, people who were healthy and became overweight, and people who were overweight the entire time. 'Measurement of weight and height was conducted at a time when surgical and pharmacological weight-loss interventions were nearly nonexistent,' the authors noted. The cause of weight loss was not assessed, but given the age of the participants and lack of diagnosed disease, it was more likely intentional than caused by severe chronic conditions or frailty.' In one study, a reduction in body mass from overweight to normal weight over six years in mid-life was tied to a lower risk of developing chronic diseases. There was also a 48 percent lower risk for chronic illness compared to those who remained overweight, which largely held even after excluding participants who developed diabetes during follow-up. Another study showed a 57 percent risk for chronic illness. A third study, with the longest follow-up period, showed that weight loss in mid-life was associated with a 19 percent reduction in overall mortality. 'I'm certain that overall prevention of overweight and obesity starting in early life is absolutely the best thing to do,' Stranberg told The Independent. 'Our study indirectly proves this by showing that persistent healthy weight over the life-course is best.' He said that he hopes the findings will inspire people to see that lifestyle changes can lead to a longer life. 'This is particularly important today as more people are overweight than when the collection of our research data began 35 years ago,' he said in the statement.
