Judge detains Streamwood man charged in slaying of his sisters
Just before 7 p.m. May 28, Janiya Jenkins returned from work to her Streamwood home where her 10-year-old sister played a video game and her 7-year-old brother rode a scooter around in the parking lot.
Shortly after, the placid family evening was interrupted when, prosecutors alleged, Jenkins' brother, Jalonie, stabbed her so brutally that her trachea was split in half.
Jalonie Jenkins, 25, is charged with two counts of murder, accused of killing his sisters, Janiya Jenkins, 21, and Eyani Jones, 10, in their home in the 1600 block of McKool Avenue of the northwest suburb. A judge ordered him detained Friday after he appeared in court in Rolling Meadows.
The judge also ordered that Jenkins be evaluated by a health care professional because he reported he is hearing voices and having dissociative feelings.
In arguing to keep Jenkins in jail while awaiting trial, Cook County prosecutors in a proffer to the court offered new details about the bloody attack that was witnessed by Janiya Jenkins' 3-year-old daughter and her 7-year-old brother. It was also overheard by a friend of Eyani's who was on a call on the social media app Snapchat while the two played the video game together.
Through the app, Eyani's friend heard screaming, along with Jenkins' 3-year-old 'telling her mom to get up and asking why she was on the floor,' according to the proffer.
She also heard Janiya Jenkins begging the defendant to not kill the kids, prosecutors said.
The call abruptly cut off after Eyani screamed for her to call 911, the proffer said. She asked her mother to check on the family.
The 7-year-old who was scootering outside came in and saw blood coming down the stairs, the proffer said. Janiya Jenkins told him to grab her daughter and leave.
Jalonie Jenkins then pushed the boy down the stairs, the proffer alleged, and put him and the 3-year-old in a bathroom.
A surveillance camera captured Jalonie Jenkins grabbing bags and the family dog and leaving the house, according to the proffer.
After about 20 minutes, the proffer said, the boy left the bathroom and tried to perform CPR on his sisters. He dressed his niece in pants and shoes and went to knock on a neighbor's door for help.
Through license plate cameras, police saw that Jalonie Jenkins drove to a Bensenville park. He tried to sell his car to people who declined, the proffer said.
Later, he was arrested by Downers Grove police and admitted to killing his sisters, the proffer said.
His next court date is June 26.

Both were found dead in their townhome on McKool Avenue. Timeline According to a court document, the stabbings happened around 6:40 p.m. on the second floor of the home. Eyani was on a Snapchat video call with her best friend, a 10-year-old girl in another state, while playing an online video game. That friend told police she heard screaming, a baby's voice asking her mom why she was on the floor and to get up, and Janiya pleading with Jalonie to not kill the kids, before the call abruptly ended. Moments later, the 7-year-old brother of the victims and the suspect walked into the house and saw blood coming down the stairs. When he reached the second floor, he found Janiya covered in blood. She told him to grab her 3-year-old daughter and leave. The 7-year-old told police Jalonie then called him a disparaging name before pushing him back down the stairs and taking him to the bathroom on the first floor. Jalonie returned moments later with Janiya's daughter and closed the bathroom door on both the young children. While in the bathroom, the 7-year-old said he heard loud thumping noises and 10-year-old Eyani crying out to call 911. Around 7 p.m., Ring security video captured Jalonie leaving the home with multiple bags. He loaded them into his Lexus, retrieved the family dog, and drove away. Roughly 10 minutes later, the 7-year-old emerged from the bathroom and discovered both his sisters unresponsive and covered in blood. He tried to perform CPR before dressing the 3-year-old and running to the home of a neighbor, who is the mother of Eyani's friend from the Snapchat call. The 7-year-old asked the neighbor to call his mom and said his sister was dead. The neighbor, along with the children, then went to the Jenkins home where she witnessed the bloody crime scene. At that point, she contacted the children's mother and called 911. Responding officers found the victims dead at the scene. A bloodied Blue Diamond kitchen knife was later recovered, hidden between a dryer and a wall on the first floor. A Florida man claiming to be a boat captain was arrested Thursday after admitting he repeatedly stabbed a shark in the head in a Snapchat video that went viral late last month. Zane Garrett, 26, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after gruesomely knifing a bull shark near a wreck site off Key West on May 22 in a video titled 'Bud broke my rod,' Local 10 reported. As the man accused of stabbing and killing his two sisters last month in Streamwood was fleeing the scene and trying to avoid capture, the victims' 7-year-old brother tried to save their lives by performing CPR, prosecutors said on Friday. Jalonie Jenkins, 25, was arrested last Sunday night in Downers Grove following a manhunt, after the bodies of his sisters, Janiya Jenkins, 21, and Eyani Jones, 10, were found inside a home in the 1600 block of McKool Avenue on May 28. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Jenkins appeared in court for the first time after Wednesday's hearing was postponed due to him being in the hospital following his arrest. His attorney made the case that he was suffering from a mental health episode. He admitted the facts of the case are horrendous, but said Jenkins is being supported by his mother and other family members.
