Judge detains Streamwood man charged in slaying of his sisters
Just before 7 p.m. May 28, Janiya Jenkins returned from work to her Streamwood home where her 10-year-old sister played a video game and her 7-year-old brother rode a scooter around in the parking lot.
Shortly after, the placid family evening was interrupted when, prosecutors alleged, Jenkins' brother, Jalonie, stabbed her so brutally that her trachea was split in half.
Jalonie Jenkins, 25, is charged with two counts of murder, accused of killing his sisters, Janiya Jenkins, 21, and Eyani Jones, 10, in their home in the 1600 block of McKool Avenue of the northwest suburb. A judge ordered him detained Friday after he appeared in court in Rolling Meadows.
The judge also ordered that Jenkins be evaluated by a health care professional because he reported he is hearing voices and having dissociative feelings.
In arguing to keep Jenkins in jail while awaiting trial, Cook County prosecutors in a proffer to the court offered new details about the bloody attack that was witnessed by Janiya Jenkins' 3-year-old daughter and her 7-year-old brother. It was also overheard by a friend of Eyani's who was on a call on the social media app Snapchat while the two played the video game together.
Through the app, Eyani's friend heard screaming, along with Jenkins' 3-year-old 'telling her mom to get up and asking why she was on the floor,' according to the proffer.
She also heard Janiya Jenkins begging the defendant to not kill the kids, prosecutors said.
The call abruptly cut off after Eyani screamed for her to call 911, the proffer said. She asked her mother to check on the family.
The 7-year-old who was scootering outside came in and saw blood coming down the stairs, the proffer said. Janiya Jenkins told him to grab her daughter and leave.
Jalonie Jenkins then pushed the boy down the stairs, the proffer alleged, and put him and the 3-year-old in a bathroom.
A surveillance camera captured Jalonie Jenkins grabbing bags and the family dog and leaving the house, according to the proffer.
After about 20 minutes, the proffer said, the boy left the bathroom and tried to perform CPR on his sisters. He dressed his niece in pants and shoes and went to knock on a neighbor's door for help.
Through license plate cameras, police saw that Jalonie Jenkins drove to a Bensenville park. He tried to sell his car to people who declined, the proffer said.
Later, he was arrested by Downers Grove police and admitted to killing his sisters, the proffer said.
His next court date is June 26.

Court document reveals graphic details in Streamwood double homicide
The Brief A newly released court document outlines what allegedly happened inside a Streamwood home when two sisters were fatally stabbed. Jalonie Jenkins is accused of killing 21-year-old Janiya Jenkins and 10-year-old Eyani Jones. A younger brother and a 3-year-old niece witnessed parts of the attack, and a friend on a video call heard the violence unfold. COOK COUNTY - A man accused of fatally stabbing his two sisters inside their Streamwood home appeared in court Friday, as prosecutors presented a chilling account of what they say happened during the May 28 attack. What we know Jalonie Jenkins, 24, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 21-year-old sister Janiya Jenkins and his 10-year-old sister Eyani Jones. Both were found dead in their townhome on McKool Avenue. Timeline According to a court document, the stabbings happened around 6:40 p.m. on the second floor of the home. Eyani was on a Snapchat video call with her best friend, a 10-year-old girl in another state, while playing an online video game. That friend told police she heard screaming, a baby's voice asking her mom why she was on the floor and to get up, and Janiya pleading with Jalonie to not kill the kids, before the call abruptly ended. Moments later, the 7-year-old brother of the victims and the suspect walked into the house and saw blood coming down the stairs. When he reached the second floor, he found Janiya covered in blood. She told him to grab her 3-year-old daughter and leave. The 7-year-old told police Jalonie then called him a disparaging name before pushing him back down the stairs and taking him to the bathroom on the first floor. Jalonie returned moments later with Janiya's daughter and closed the bathroom door on both the young children. While in the bathroom, the 7-year-old said he heard loud thumping noises and 10-year-old Eyani crying out to call 911. Around 7 p.m., Ring security video captured Jalonie leaving the home with multiple bags. He loaded them into his Lexus, retrieved the family dog, and drove away. Roughly 10 minutes later, the 7-year-old emerged from the bathroom and discovered both his sisters unresponsive and covered in blood. He tried to perform CPR before dressing the 3-year-old and running to the home of a neighbor, who is the mother of Eyani's friend from the Snapchat call. The 7-year-old asked the neighbor to call his mom and said his sister was dead. The neighbor, along with the children, then went to the Jenkins home where she witnessed the bloody crime scene. At that point, she contacted the children's mother and called 911. Responding officers found the victims dead at the scene. A bloodied Blue Diamond kitchen knife was later recovered, hidden between a dryer and a wall on the first floor. The Cook County medical examiner found that Eyani had been stabbed 10 times in the neck, chest, and hands, while Janiya had at least 12 stab wounds, mainly to the neck. One stab wound had split her trachea in half. Their deaths were ruled homicides. Finding the suspect After Jalonie drove away from the crime scene, police say he was tracked through license plate readers to Redmond Park in Bensenville, where he tried to sell his car to a stranger. Jalonie was also texting with his girlfriend, and they spoke on the phone. He admitted to her that he fought with his sisters, according to prosecutors. Around 10 p.m., his phone was no longer pinging with cell towers in the area. Prosecutors say this means he either turned off his phone or destroyed it. Late that night, police located Jalonie's vehicle at Redmond Park. Officers executed a search warrant and recovered the suspect's blood throughout the interior of the driver's side. They also found clothing containing his blood in a wooded area of the park. Four days later, on June 1, Jalonie was arrested in Downers Grove. He allegedly admitted to stabbing both his sisters. What we don't know The motive for the attack is unclear. What's next In court on Friday, Jalonie's attorney said he has no prior criminal history, is a father of two, and is receiving treatment for psychosis. A mental health evaluation was requested. He was ordered held without bond and is due back in court on June 26. The judge also barred him from contacting witnesses, including his family. The Source The information in this story was obtained from a court document and the Streamwood Police Department, as well as previous FOX 32 reporting.

Florida man arrested for repeatedly stabbing shark in head as ‘revenge' for stealing fish after gory video goes viral
A Florida man claiming to be a boat captain was arrested Thursday after admitting he repeatedly stabbed a shark in the head in a Snapchat video that went viral late last month. Zane Garrett, 26, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after gruesomely knifing a bull shark near a wreck site off Key West on May 22 in a video titled 'Bud broke my rod,' Local 10 reported. Garrett, who is identified as a captain on Second Nature Charters' website, was turned over by an anonymous tipster who saw the horrifying video and reported it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, citing 'safety concerns,' according to the outlet. Garrett was recently 'investigated for false representation' because he does not have the required license to be a captain, it added. 3 Zane Garrett, 26, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty. Monroe County Sheriffs Office Key West 3 'Bro broke my rod,' Garret said in the gory viral Snapchat. Local 10 Officials interviewed the man who originally posted the video and pointed them straight to Garrett. 'Yes, to weapons for the 9-11 inch filet knife, yes to violent behavior for stabbing a shark repeatedly, yes to being concerned over them being dumb enough to post themselves committing a crime,' the tipster said in their report. 'Yah, that's me,' Garrett admitted when authorities presented him with the gory footage. Garrett claimed that his actions fell in line with the typical method used to deter sharks from stealing catches, and that stabbing one would ward others off. 3 Garrett confirmed to authorities that he was the person captured in the video. Local 10 He later confessed to stabbing the shark numerous times in an act of 'revenge' because the predator 'had stolen his fish and was a nuisance,' according to the warrant cited by Local 10. 'I asked Mr. Garrett if he thought that the repeated blows would eventually kill the shark, to which he replied, 'No. It takes a lot more to kill a shark than stabbing it in the head,'' the document stated. He also confessed that he 'did a lot more killing' of sharks with firearms and 'has stabbed sharks and/or killed sharks without harvesting them onto his boat many times in the past.' Authorities condemned the 'egregious' slaying for causing unnecessary harm to the shark. Garrett is being held in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Key West jail facility on a $10,000 bond. His arrangement is set for June 26.

7-year-old tried to save sisters with CPR after fatal stabbing in Streamwood, Illinois, prosecutors say; accused killer hid weapon, tried to sell car
As the man accused of stabbing and killing his two sisters last month in Streamwood was fleeing the scene and trying to avoid capture, the victims' 7-year-old brother tried to save their lives by performing CPR, prosecutors said on Friday. Jalonie Jenkins, 25, was arrested last Sunday night in Downers Grove following a manhunt, after the bodies of his sisters, Janiya Jenkins, 21, and Eyani Jones, 10, were found inside a home in the 1600 block of McKool Avenue on May 28. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Jenkins appeared in court for the first time after Wednesday's hearing was postponed due to him being in the hospital following his arrest. His attorney made the case that he was suffering from a mental health episode. He admitted the facts of the case are horrendous, but said Jenkins is being supported by his mother and other family members. Prosecutors said Jenkins lived in his childhood home with his mother and siblings. They said Eyani was on a Snapchat call with a friend when the stabbing attack occurred. Jenkins stabbed her at least 10 times and Janiya at least 12 times, all while two other young family members, 7 and 3, were playing outside. After the stabbings, the state's attorney said Jenkins locked the two younger children in a bathroom, hid the weapon, a kitchen knife, in the home, and left with a bag of bloody clothes in a Lexus registered to him. They said he tried to sell his car and turned off his phone to evade police. He admitted to stabbing his sisters. Meantime, Eyani's and Janiya's 7-year-old brother left the bathroom about 20 minutes after Jenkins locked him in, and found Janiya and Eyani covered in blood. He tried to perform CPR on them, but couldn't save them. He went back to the bathroom to get his niece, and ran to a nearby home, brought a neighbor back to the bloody crime scene, and then called their mother and 911, according to prosecutors. Jenkins' defense attorney said the accused killer is now on medication for psychosis and asked for a mental health evaluation, which the judge agreed to. Jenkins is due back in court on June 26 at 9 a.m. in Rolling Meadows.
