‘Scared to death': Man says his family life changed, business paused after hit-and-run
A man in Gaston was riding his bike to a friend's house on Valentine's Day when a car hit him and then kept driving.
Hugh Stone II was riding along Highway 74 near Crowder's Mountain. Police said the driver who hit Stone should have known what happened, but she kept going.
'I see mailboxes flying up behind me and I hear tires screeching,' Stone said.

He said another car behind him nearly ran him over. A witness called the police.
'I still don't see how somebody could not have a heart, to not stop,' his wife, Delores Blalock, said.
Stone told Channel 9′s Ken Lemon that he spent a week in an induced coma with a brain injury and fractured back.
'It was touch and go,' Blalock said. 'It's altered our lives forever.'
Stone said the pain in his back and head is intense. But what hurts the most is the moments he loses with his daughter.
'I can't pick up my little girl,' he said. 'I can't pick her up and hold her. I'm scared to death I'm going to fall with her.'

The injuries have kept Stone from his job as a construction worker, he said. And doctors still aren't sure of the extent of his brain injury.
'I don't know if I will ever get my full memory back. Or my full abilities back,' Stone said.
A grand jury indicted Kathryn Benton for felony hit and run and causing serious injuries.
It won't heal the injuries, but Stone said it meant someone would answer for the hurt he feels.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Tristan Kern de Gonzales fights back tears as he recalls the final words he told Joss just before he died at the age of 59. 'Everything happened very quickly,' Kern de Gonzales, 32, says of the fatal shooting at their San Antonio, Texas, home on Sunday, June 1, that allegedly resulted from a dispute with one of their neighbors. 'Everything was very close range and due to the severity and the trauma of the various head wounds, I knew that there was no hope of saving Jonathan's physical form, and he was struggling so hard, trying to stay alive,' he notes. 'It was just really, really close range,' Kern de Gonzales remembers. 'I held my husband's face together as best I could, and I told him how much I loved him, and that none of this was his fault. I told him he needed to cross over easy. He didn't need to keep fighting.' Kern de Gonzales continues, 'I told him that no matter what, and in some way, shape, or form, we'll always be together, and he'll always be my husband.' He claims that while his husband lay dying, 'the [alleged] gunman was still in [his] car' and 'still had the gun pointed over me.' 'He was laughing,' Kern de Gonzales alleges. 'He mocked me for telling my husband that I loved him and used the same homophobic slurs' that the gunman allegedly used before shooting Joss. 'I was just really looking down at my husband, focused on him, making sure that he had completely crossed over,' Kern de Gonzales says. San Antonio Police arrested one of Joss' neighbors, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, shortly after the actor was fatally shot and charged him with first-degree murder. Police have said Alvarez, 56, admitted to shooting and killing the Parks and Recreation actor. He was released on Monday, June 2, on a $200,000 bond. The shooting has left Kern de Gonzales in a state of 'shock.' 'The flashbacks are very, very intense, and they affect my whole body,' he tells PEOPLE. Kern de Gonzales, who previously wrote on Facebook that Joss pushed him out of the way and saved his life, says his late husband's final act of self-sacrifice has given him strength as he grieves. 'I know that I have to keep going and not let go of this because he saved my life, and I can't just let that go,' he explains. 'I have to use the gift that he gave me wisely.' Kern de Gonzales adds of Joss, who he met in 2023 and married on Valentine's Day 2025: 'He will always be my husband and the love of my life. He really gave me a lifetime's worth of love in the short time that we got together.' Kern de Gonzales has maintained that Joss was the victim of a hate crime and that they suffered repeated harassment and homophobic abuse from their neighbors prior to his husband's murder. 'It does hurt whenever people try to say that it wasn't a hate crime,' he says. The day after Joss died, the San Antonio Police Department said their investigation had 'found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation." However, at a Thursday press conference, SAPD police chief William McManus walked back that statement. Union County family escapes house fire; community rallies to help rebuild
A Union County family is safe but lost everything in a house fire investigators say started with an air compressor and now, neighbors are stepping in to support them as they start over. The Union County Fire Marshal ruled it an accident. Investigators believe an air compressor was plugged into one car, pumping air into a tire on a pickup truck, which started the fire. Everything the Robinsons own is gone. 'Material things can be replaced but someone's life can't,' said Veronica Robinson. Robinson sees beyond the damage. 'All I can think about is my mom,' she said. 'All I can think about is her. What if I lost her?' Robinson said she was in her bathroom Monday morning when she heard a visiting family member banging on the door. 'I saw that the flames were starting to jump onto the house,' Robinson said. 'And when I [had] seen that, I immediately ran back in the house, ran to that room right there, and got my mom out.' Robinson said her daughter-in-law helped her oxygen-dependent father escape. He's recovering in a hospital as her family works to figure out what's next. 'I'd be completely lost if it wasn't for the community coming together and just helping any way they can anyway,' Robinson said. She credits her neighbor, Kristen Marcum, for calling 911 and coordinating donations through a GoFundMe account. Robinson said she was reminded of what she does have. Alleged thefts of over $2K in Legos lead to felony charge
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A woman is facing a charge of felony theft after reports state she stole thousands of dollars worth of products from a store — namely, Legos. Police were called to the Target at 417 Boardman Poland Road in The Shops at Boardman Park on May 29 for reports that a woman had loaded a cart for of Lego sets and then left the store without paying for them — something employees claimed she had reportedly done in the past. When police arrived at the store, reports state they observed a woman matching the suspect's description near the entrance of the store, with an employee yelling at officers that she was the woman involved in the theft. The woman, identified as Anna Stone, was then detained while police investigated. An employee told police Stone is known to them for stealing from the store four times prior, with the loss from all of her accused thefts totaling $2,855.73, according to reports. On May 29, an employee said they saw Stone walk past all registers with the unpaid merchandise and ordered her to stop, at which point she ran — leaving the cart behind — and was met outside and apprehended by police. Reports state the cart was filled with 25 Lego sets and three clothing items, worth a total of $1,541.24. Stone was also listed in reports as stealing from the store on the following dates: April 6, taking four Lego sets worth $539.96 April 9, taking eight Lego sets worth $822.92 May 20, taking 20 Lego sets worth $1,121.90 Employees also provided police with security footage of the alleged thefts. Those alleged thefts, added to the most recent attempt, total $4,026.01. Reports state Stone was served with a fifth-degree felony theft charge while she was in court on a previous theft charge.
