Global cinema attendance drops in 2024

CANNES, France: Cinema ticket sales fell 8.8 percent worldwide in 2024 from the previous year, marking the first annual drop since the Covid pandemic, the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) said in Cannes on Friday.
The decline comes after years of recovery for the industry since the collapse triggered by pandemic restrictions in 2020.
"In 2024, a total of 4.8 billion cinema tickets were sold worldwide, generating estimated revenues of 28 billion euros," Martin Kanzler, a film analyst at the EAO, said in a press conference on the sidelines of annual film festival.
"That is 500 million fewer tickets than in 2023."
Since 2020 -- a disastrous year for cinemas due to health restrictions -- cinema attendance worldwide had been rising.
"Perhaps we have reached a new plateau," Kanzler said.
Cinema attendance is now at 68 percent of 2019 levels, the last year before the pandemic, compared with more than 70 percent in 2023.
In this sluggish environment, Europe is faring better than other regions of the world, with cinema attendance at 75 percent of 2019 levels, and the decline in ticket sales was just 1.7 percent in 2024.
By contrast, in China -- the world's largest market with a 21 percent share -- attendance plunged by 22 percent.
In Europe, two countries stand out for their density of cinemas per capita and a high average attendance rate -- France and Ireland.
Regarding productions, 81 percent are linked to films produced in three countries -- the United States, China and India, said Manuel Fioroni, an analyst at the EAO.
Unlike Chinese and Indian productions, which are sold almost exclusively to their domestic markets, American films are exported and "cross borders easily thanks to their distribution network but also their international audience".
"Transnational distribution across macro regions remain difficult for theatrical films, with the exception of Hollywood movies, that can travel easily across borders through their distribution network, but also to international audiences," Fioroni said.
In Europe, 63 percent of cinemagoers saw an American film in 2024.
However, European productions are catching up and recorded a 33 percent market share.
"And this is the best result in four years, even 10 if we exclude somehow the typical year that was 2020 in the middle of the pandemic," Fioroni said.
Of the 20 biggest box office hits in Europe, 18 are American films.
"Inside Out 2", "Despicable Me 4" and "Deadpool & Wolverine" took the top three spots.

Isabella Leong, who once dated a HK billionaire, reportedly in new relationship

Actress Isabella Leong is believed to be dating Chinese actor and director Marc Ma. Photos: Isabella Leong/Instagram, Sin Chew Daily Macau-born actress Isabella Leong, the ex-girlfriend of Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li, has apparently found love again, Sin Chew Daily reported. The 36-year-old recently sparked dating rumours after she was photographed attending an event with Chinese actor and director Marc Ma, who's nine years her senior. The pair were later seen holding hands as they left the venue, appearing happy and relaxed as they chatted and laughed. It's reported that the two had dinner together later in the day. According to Hong Kong media reports, speculation about Leong and Ma's budding romance first surfaced in late 2024, when they were spotted leaving a cafe in Beijing hand-in-hand. The rumours intensified when netizens noted that Leong has been spending much of her time in Beijing in recent years, suggesting it may be because she wants to be closer to Ma, 45. Leong met Li on the set of The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor through Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh in 2008. Both Yeoh and Leong starred in that Hollywood movie. Although she was initially interested in marrying Li – with whom she shares three children – Leong decided to call it quits in February 2011 as she 'couldn't accept' how 'popular' the billionaire was with women. 'I needed more security in my life,' she said in a talk show last year. Meanwhile, Ma began his career as a child actor in the 1991 film Fazike but initially struggled to find a foothold in the industry. After graduating from high school, he left his hometown of Lanzhou and travelled to Beijing to sit for the entrance exam at the Central Academy of Drama which he unfortunately failed. In 2000, Ma found work as a production assistant at a drama production company and later starred in the 2003 series Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils – a role that opened more doors for casting opportunities. He gained fame for his performance in the 2013 film The White Storm , which earned him the Best Newcomer prize at the Hundred Flower Awards.

'Thug Life' title inspired by Tupac Shakur, says Kamal Haasan

The 70-year-old who stars in and produces the film said it will explore deep questions of ethics, power and consequence rather than glorifying violence or crime. 04 Jun 2025 10:05am Speaking about his long-pending magnum opus 'Marudhanayagam', Kamal said only about 30 minutes of the film's footage had been completed and reviving the film would demand a fresh creative approach. - DMY photo KUALA LUMPUR - The title of the Tamil film 'Thug Life', slated for release tomorrow, is inspired by the late American rapper Tupac Shakur's redefinition of the term, says Indian actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan. The 70-year-old who stars in and produces the film said it will explore deep questions of ethics, power and consequence rather than glorifying violence or crime. Kamal said his new film will explore two interpretations - the literal lives of thugs and a broader analysis of their choices and the systems surrounding them. - DMY photo "Tupac redefined the term 'Thug Life'. What was once used to humiliate others (has evolved into something else)... people now say - 'That's so thug' - when someone does something smart,' he said at a press conference here on Saturday during the film's promotional event. Tupac, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time, was a best-selling artiste with over 75 million records sold globally. He was known for lyrics that tackled social injustice and political issues. Kamal Haasan said his new film will explore two interpretations - the literal lives of thugs and a broader analysis of their choices and the systems surrounding them. "It will question whether their work is ethical, what consequences come from it and whether it's right to feel proud of that as the film explores different aspects of that life,' said the three-time Indian National Film Award winner. Originally conceived as a bilingual project titled 'Amar Hai', with the script penned by Kamal Haasan, the film was later taken up by acclaimed Indian director Mani Ratnam, who brought his own interpretation to the project. 'Thug Life' marks Kamal Hassan and Mani Ratnam's first collaboration in 38 years since the iconic 1987 Tamil film 'Nayakan'. When asked if any of his past unrealised film projects might still be revived, Kamal Haasan said such decisions must be made with careful consideration. "As the film industry, which I consider my family, is large, I must take into account the advice of those I respect as brothers, especially when they invest (in my projects) as producers. "Their financial safety matters, and that is why I cannot attempt to materialise every vision or dream I have,' he said, referring to the substantial investment required for such large-scale productions. Speaking about his long-pending magnum opus 'Marudhanayagam', he said only about 30 minutes of the film's footage had been completed, and reviving the film would demand a fresh creative approach. "Even if we take the Hollywood route, we still need at least one and a half hours more. "But you can't compress a film like that as it's a big one, so we have to shoot it again and make sure it fits with current trends,' he said. 'Marudhanayagam', a historical epic set during the British colonial era, was launched in 1997 with much fanfare but production work ceased soon after due to various problems. Kamal Haasan, meanwhile, recalled fond memories of his past shoots in Malaysia. "We shot here years ago when my friend (legendary Indian actor) Rajinikanth and I came and filmed a song, with half of it shot in Singapore and the other half in Malaysia. I've been here (Malaysia) so many times that, as much as I have fans, I also have many friends in both Malaysia and Singapore,' he said. 'Thug Life', which also stars Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan and Joju George, will be distributed in Malaysia by DMY Creations. - BERNAMA More Like This

#SHOWBIZ: Penang-born actress Pik-Sen Lim of 'Mind Your Language' fame dies at 80

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang-born actress Lim Pik-Sen, best known for her role as Chung Su-Lee in the popular British sitcom Mind Your Language, has passed away. She was 80. Pik-Sen rose to prominence in the late 1970s as the Chinese student character which became one of the most familiar faces on British television, and was well-known in both the UK and Malaysia. Pik-Sen, the daughter of businessman Lim Cheng Teik, died on Monday, as confirmed by tributes shared by friends and colleagues. Actor Daniel York, who collaborated with her on stage and in audio dramas, fondly remembered her on Facebook: "She was a joy – full of love, laughter, and mischief. Her gift for comedy made you feel safe on stage. That unique voice and bold energy carried us all." He added, "We've shared the same agent for over 25 years. She'll be deeply missed." Fans of Mind Your Language also paid their respects on a dedicated Facebook group boasting more than 675,000 members. "She was the greatest follower of Chairman Mao," joked actor Rafsan Tahmid, referencing one of Su-Lee's iconic lines from the show. The British Film Institute once described Pik-Sen as "the most recognisable Chinese actor on British television throughout the 1970s and 1980s." Before her sitcom fame, Pik-Sen had already made significant inroads on British television. In the 1960s, she played Nurse Kwei in Emergency Ward 10, one of Britain's earliest medical dramas. Her role as a fluent English-speaking Chinese nurse who falls in love with a doctor was considered pioneering at the time. Her other credits include an appearance in Doctor Who as Chin Lee in "The Mind of Evil" (1971), the military drama Spearhead, and popular shows like Coronation Street, Casualty, Holby City, and The Bill. On the big screen, she showcased her versatility in the 2011 film Johnny English Reborn, where she portrayed the formidable Killer Cleaner. In more recent years, Lim's distinctive voice graced the Dark Souls video game series as narrator. She also appeared in American TV productions such as Vampire Academy (2022) and The Nevers (2023).
