Tommy Smith – Battling ALS one day at a time
COLUMBUS, Ga (WRBL) – When Tommy Smith was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis back in 2012, his family reacted like any family would. Rallying together around Smith, and that gracious support from his community has benefited Smith in more ways than he can express.
ALS robs the body of the ability to walk, talk, eat, work, and in the worst cases the ability to breathe. Relatively, Tommy Smith has been lucky. Where most cases of ALS have a 2-5 year life expectancy, Smith is on year thirteen.
For Tommy – ALS has so far robbed him of being a little league umpire, playing with his grandkids without a wheelchair, and speaking normally.
That said – it has not been easy.
Luckily for Tommy Smith, there's Vickie Smith. The couple met when Tommy was nine years old, and Vickie was seven as next door neighbors. They have been together just short of 46 years.
Vickie has been Tommy's caregiver ever since his diagnosis, and has done everything in her power to provide for Tommy. Over the past couple of years, Vickie has had her own health problems. Recently being declared cancer-free, after her second fight with Breast Cancer.
Obviously with a disease like ALS, the medical bills pile up quickly. The average cost to care for a person with ALS is $250,000.
Major League Baseball has stepped up to the plate in recent years, recognizing those that suffer from the same disease as Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig. Gehrig's name is forever intertwined with the disease, as many refer to it as 'Lou Gehrig's disease'.

The five-story, 129,000-square-foot facility will be located at the corner of César Chávez and Valencia streets (3555 César Chavez Street) in San Francisco and is expected to open in 2028. Designed as a regional destination for brain health, the complex will unite care delivery, advanced diagnostics and research in one location. High-Tech Hub for Brain Health This $442 million investment underscores Sutter Health's long-term commitment to expanding access to specialized, high-acuity care in San Francisco and the broader Bay Area. When complete, the Sutter Advanced Neuroscience Complex at Mission Bernal will bring together approximately 80 physicians and clinicians across range of neurological specialties – including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, ALS, headache, neurosurgery, neurology, epilepsy, neuro-oncology and movement disorders – to deliver seamless, integrated care in one location. The new complex will house a full spectrum of services, including neurology, neurosurgery, imaging, lab, infusion, rehabilitation and an on-site ambulatory surgery center. Patients will also benefit from direct access to leading research and clinical trials, further supporting advancements in diagnosis and treatment. Two of Sutter's nationally recognized programs – the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center – will relocate to the new complex, enabling greater capacity and deeper collaboration among specialists. The site will also include underground parking to improve convenience for patients and visitors. In a related investment, Sutter plans to add two neurological intervention suites to the adjacent CPMC Mission Bernal campus hospital by 2027. These suites will offer advanced imaging and enable rapid detection and minimally invasive treatment of life-threatening neurological conditions. 'Our goal is to provide coordinated, comprehensive access to integrated care that merges the expertise of neurologists and neurosurgeons,' said Dr. Lewis Leng, a neurosurgeon with Sutter West Bay Medical Group. The Colorado Rockies are having a historically bad season and when they dropped to 9-50, they set the mark for worst start to a Major League Baseball season in the modern era (1901-present). They were also the third fastest to 50 losses. When Scottie Scheffler won the Memorial for his third win in his last four starts, the memes were flying. Former MLB star calls out AOC's 'virtue signaling' after antisemitic attack in Colorado
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is striking out with a Jewish former Major League Baseball player over her response to a recent antisemitic attack in Colorado. "We're just at a point now where the Jewish people are just tired. We're tired of having to deal with so much hatred," said Kevin Youkilis, a World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox, during an appearance on "Fox & Friends," Wednesday. His comments come after Ocasio-Cortez posted on social media about the attack, which targeted a pro-Israel group gathered to call for the return of Israeli hostages held in captivity by Hamas. Multiple people were injured when the suspect allegedly used homemade incendiary devices to attack attendees. Suspect Mohamed Sabry Soliman is now facing hate crime, attempted murder, assault and other charges.
