Review into plans to make Jersey waters safer
A review has been launched into proposals to introduce penalties for people found to have harmed others in Jersey waters
The change to the Harbours (Inshore Safety) Regulations would introduce new offences for the dangerous or careless operation of a ship and for causing serious injury or death.
It is also proposed to introduce aggravated offences for those who cause death or serious injury while under the influence while in charge of a vessel.
The review was launched by the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel, which said it wanted to see if the proposals go far enough to "make Jersey's water safer for everyone."

Deputy Montfort Tadier, panel chairman, said: "Many locals and visitors to Jersey enjoy spending time in or on the water, whether it is for sailing, swimming or because they run a business that is based around what the sea has to offer.
"Therefore, it's important that the laws which govern our territorial waters enable the authorities to properly deal with any incidents that might occur, especially in cases where external factors such as drugs or alcohol may be an issue.
"This review will investigate whether what has been proposed goes far enough or if more could be done to ensure it meets the aim, which is to make Jersey's water safer for everyone."
The panel said it would present its findings to the assembly ahead of a debate due to take place in July.

RCMP arrest individual for exporting banned technology to Russia
NEWMARKET, ON, June 6, 2025 /CNW/ - The Ontario RCMP have arrested a Canadian businessman for violating Canadian sanctions that prohibit technology trade and exports to Russia. Following a three-year investigation, the Ontario RCMP's Sanctions Unit has obtained Attorney General of Canada consent to commence a criminal prosecution under the Special Economic Measures Act, S.C. 1992, c. 17, and the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations, SOR/2014-58. Anton Trofimov (43) of Toronto, Ontario, is facing the following charges for sanctions evasion: Export, sell, supply or ship a good referred to in Column 1 of Schedule 7 to Russia, contrary to section 3.9 (1) of the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations (SOR/2014-58), thereby committing an offence contrary to section 8 of the Special Economic Measures Act, S.C. 1992, c.17; Export, sell, supply or ship a good referred to in the Restricted Goods and Technologies List to Russia, contrary to section 3.6 (1) of the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations (SOR/2014-58), thereby committing an offence contrary to section 8 of the Special Economic Measures Act, S.C. 1992, c.17; Possess proceeds of property obtained by crime, contrary to section 354(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. Trofimov made a first appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice at Toronto on May 22, 2025. "Canada's sanctions are a critical component to our economic security, and these types of violations pose serious risks in maintaining international peace and global security. Individuals and businesses are responsible for ensuring the end destination of all exports do not fall under these sanctions. Glass attack on women prompts police appeal
Police have launched an appeal to find two men that attacked two women at a bar in Nottingham city centre. Officers said the men threw pint glasses at the women's faces just before 02:30 BST at Billy Bootleggers, in High Pavement, on 28 May. Both of the women, who are aged in their 20s, required hospital treatment, including stitches. Nottinghamshire Police said the attack happened after the men had approached the women's table and attempted to engage them in conversation. Boy and girl sentenced for killing dog walker, 80
A 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl have been sentenced for killing an 80-year-old man out walking his dog in a park. Bhim Kohli died the day after he was assaulted in Franklin Park, yards from his home in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, on 1 September last year. The boy, who racially abused Mr Kohli before slapping him in the face with a slider shoe, was sentenced to seven years in custody at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday. The girl, who encouraged the assault and laughed as she filmed it on her phone, was given a youth rehabilitation order of three years and made subject to a six month curfew.
