Navy ramps up unmanned systems weapons tests, calls for industry push
The Navy this month undertook two groundbreaking weapons systems tests, which were followed by an announcement for a planned Future Unmanned Surface Vessel Industry Day in June to 'to accelerate the development and procurement of future USVs.'
The Navy's Strategic Systems Programs on May 2 conducted the first sea-based cold-gas launch approach of its Conventional Prompt Strike, or CPS, hypersonic missile.
Unlike in hot launch methods, in which the projectile motor ignites in the launch silo before flying towards its target, the cold-gas technique sees the missile launch first before the first stage of ignition.
This method, according to the Navy, will become the standard for launching hypersonic missiles from ships at sea.
'The cold-gas approach allows the Navy to eject the missile from the platform and achieve a safe distance above the ship prior to first stage ignition,' said Vice Adm. Johnny Wolfe, director of Strategic Systems Programs.
The test of the CPS missile was followed by the first-ever launch of a Solid Fuel Integral Rocket Ramjet (SFIRR) from an unmanned aerial vehicle operated by the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division.
The unmanned vehicle launch test also tested live firing control on a BQM-34 target vehicle, demonstrating maneuverability, control and long-range accuracy.
'This successful integration validates key aspects of our design and moves us closer to delivering an advanced propulsion system that will provide warfighters with greater range and speed,' said Abbey Horning, product director of NAWCWD's Advanced Concepts, Prototyping and Experimentation office, in a release. 'We're not just revisiting an old idea; we're refining and modernizing it to fit today's mission,'
With the Navy seeking to strengthen its existing fleet with the inclusion of unmanned vessels, it is scheduled to host an industry day in Washington on June 17 for the Future Unmanned Surface Vessel Program.
The craft showcased will be 'an open ocean, 25+ knot, high endurance, non-exquisite, autonomous vessel,' which will also be 'built to commercial standards,' according to a special notice.

108-year-old submarine wreck seen in stunning detail in new footage
In 1917, two US submarines collided off the coast of San Diego and submarine USS F-1 sank to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, along with 19 crew members aboard. The horrible accident, whose wreckage was discovered in 1975, represents the US Naval Submarine Force's first wartime submarine loss. Now, researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have captured new footage of the 1,300 feet-deep underwater archaeological site. 'They were technical dives requiring specialized expertise and equipment,' Anna Michel, a co-lead of the expedition and chief scientist at the National Deep Submergence Facility, said in a statement. 'We were careful and methodical in surveying these historical sites so that we could share these stunning images, while also maintaining the reverence these sites deserve.' The high-definition imagining and mapping of the USS F-1 took place during a deep-sea training and engineering mission in February and March. The missions aimed to train future submersible pilots and test the human-occupied vehicle Alvin and autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry. The team captured never-seen-before images and videos and conducted a sonar survey, which essentially consists of mapping a region by shooting sound waves at it and registering the echo. Imaging specialists combined the 2D images into a 3D model of the wreck—a technique called photogrammetry. Using photogrammetry reveals measurements not just of the submarine but of the marine life that over the past century has claimed the vessel as its own. 'As a Navy veteran, making this dive—together with another Navy veteran and a Navy historian—was a solemn privilege,' said Office of Naval Research Program Officer Rob Sparrock, who was in Alvin when it went down to the wreck. 'There was time to contemplate the risks that all mariners, past and present, face. It also reminded me of the importance of these training dives, which leverage the knowledge from past dives, lessons learned and sound engineering.' After the dives, they held a remembrance ceremony aboard the research vessel Atlantis during which a bell rang once for each of the crew members lost in 1917. 'History and archaeology are all about people and we felt it was important to read their names aloud,' said Naval History and Heritage Command Underwater Archaeologist Brad Krueger, who also dove in Alvin. 'The Navy has a solemn responsibility to ensure the legacies of its lost Sailors are remembered.'

Five Navy ships now outfitted with augmented reality maintenance tech
Five U.S. Navy ships now have working Augmented Reality Maintenance Systems that allow technicians to remotely troubleshoot problems from a sailor's point of view. Within less than a week, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division installed the systems, also known as ARMS, on the aircraft carrier Nimitz and the guided missile destroyers Curtis Wilbur, Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee, Gridley and Fitzgerald. The new systems are designed to circumvent the costly need for subject matter experts, who are often based ashore, to physically travel to ships to provide tech support. The Augmented Reality Maintenance Systems use mixed reality technology, such as smart glasses, to allow sailors to show subject matter experts shipboard system issues in real-time. At the same time, sailors are able to access manuals, blueprints, 3D models and other tools while experts provide remote guidance. The ARMS team is reported to be looking at other options for mixed reality headsets. 'The biggest win in this case is that the sailor fixed the problem, not the external SME,' Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division Commanding Officer Capt. Tony Holmes said in a release. 'ARMS capability goes to the heart of enabling sailor self-sufficiency, and keeping our warships in the fight.' The milestone marks the first time the systems have been installed for operational use. The move towards remote maintenance technology comes as the Pentagon continues its drive to cut spending and increasingly integrate digital systems into the Navy. This month, the Navy tested a missile launch from an unmanned aerial vehicle, and has also announced a planned Future Unmanned Vehicle Industry Day to encourage private industry's involvement in developing new unmanned surface vehicle technology.

Here's a look at some of the historical figures whose work inspired Nvidia's chip names. Nvidia takes some inspiration from history when it comes to naming its AI chips. There are chips named for Grace Hopper, David Blackwell, Vera Rubin. While their nomenclature may be overshadowed by other features like their computing power or speed as Big Tech giants and AI startups alike clamor for these chips, their names are a nod to scientific pioneers. Here are some of the historical figures Nvidia has paid homage to for their groundbreaking work: Grace Hopper Hopper was a computer scientist and mathematician who worked on the Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC I), one of the first all-electronic digital computers. She received a degree in mathematics from Vassar College, where she also taught, and her master's and doctorate degrees in mathematics from Yale University. In 1943, she enlisted in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service and eventually rose to become a rear admiral in the Navy. Hopper invented the first computer compiler, which turned programming instructions into code computers could read, and worked on the development of COBOL, a widely used computer language. Richard Feynman Feynman got his undergraduate degree at MIT and his Ph.D. at Princeton University.
