Chelsea kick-off their Club World Cup campaign with painful introductions in front of a half-empty stadium as fans cringe on social media
Chelsea kicked off their Club World Cup campaign to all the glitz and glamour you would expect of an tournament in America... but very few fans were there to see it.
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia seemed determined to ramp up the occasion as the Blues took on Los Angeles on Monday.
Each Chelsea player was given a lengthy introduction, the sound of bells blared over the speakers. An enthusiastic announcer then gave a ten-second countdown to kick-off, apparently undeterred by the fact there were huge sections of empty seats in the 71,000 capacity stadium.
Tickets for general admission were on sale for £38 and early estimates had the attendance at around 26,000 with the entire top tier of the stadium closed.
FIFA have been concerned about attendances for the tournament and had reduced tickets after poor take-up. However, before Chelsea's game, attendances had been healthy.
Inter Miami's opening match of the tournament, with Lionel Messi the star attraction, drew 60,927 for their game with Al Ahly.
More than 80,000 were in the Rose Bowl on Sunday to watch Paris-Saint Germain's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid. But the game in Atlanta evidently failed to have the same attraction.
That is despite the fact Atlanta is one of the States' footballing hotbeds.
This city is home to both the MLS's best supported football team, Atlanta United, which averages 44,037 fans per match, along with the new home to the US Soccer various teams, including Mauricio Pochettino's men's team and Emma Hayes's women's team.
Chelsea almost sold out this stadium two years ago with over 70,000 fans watching them face Newcastle in a friendly tournament named the Premier League Summer Series.
One explanation for the low attendance may be the kick-off time of 3pm on a workday - a timing which seems to have European TV audiences more in mind than locals..
Fans were left cringing on social media at the lack of support for Enzo Maresca's side. One wrote on X: 'Chelsea fans told me for years they are big in America and North America, look at those empty seats.'
While another added: 'What nonsense is this announcing Chelsea and lafc players individually at #FIFAClubWorldCup2025 , americans must stop trying to americanize things that work perfectly. If It Ain't Broke ... stadium is painfully empty yet a team from america is playing.'

Fire release renderings for $650M downtown Chicago stadium
June 17 - The Chicago Fire FC released renderings on Monday for the club's privately financed $650 million soccer-specific stadium in downtown Chicago that is expected to open in 2028. The project was first announced earlier this month and is part of the first phase of a 62-acre master plan known as The 78, after Related Midwest's vision of creating Chicago's 78th neighborhood. Construction is slated to begin early in 2026, with the approximately 22,000-seat stadium planned as the anchor of The 78. The stadium will be entirely financed by Fire FC owner and chairman, Joe Mansueto, and will include riverfront views along with open public plazas. "I love this city and its architecture," Mansueto said in a statement. "This stadium is adding to Chicago's iconic skyline, so I want it to look timeless. It will look like it's always belonged here, but with the modern innovations required for a world-class soccer club." Stadium plans call for 50 suites and a purpose-built supporter section with room for approximately 2,000 fans in bleacher seating. "We are creating a fortress for our team and a home for our fans," said Dave Baldwin, Chicago Fire FC president of business pperations. "The open-air stadium with grass playing surface and intimate environment is intentional to give our team an edge and bring our supporters even closer to the team they love." --Field Level Media

Boca Juniors turn up the heat in Miami with Benfica draw
MIAMI, June 16 (Reuters) - After Lionel Messi lit up the Club World Cup opener, Miami's Hard Rock Stadium was awash in Argentine passion again as Boca Juniors fans turned it into a little Buenos Aires for their team's 2-2 draw with Benfica on Monday. A day after draping the shores of Miami Beach in blue and gold on the eve of their team's debut, the Boca fans chanted their way into the arena and through the game, which put them in second place in Group C behind Bayern Munich after the German champions demolished Auckland City 10-0 on Sunday. Both teams finished with 10 men after Benfica's Andrea Bellotti and Boca's Nicolas Figal picked up straight red cards in a heated contest that saw the Portuguese team cancel out a two-goal deficit. Boca next face Bayern on Friday in Miami while Benfica will face Auckland City in Orlando, FL. After a scrappy opening 20 minutes, the stands trembled when Boca went ahead in the 21st as Lautaro Blanco's low cross was met by Miguel Merentiel, triggering wild celebrations. Six minutes later, the Argentine side doubled the tally with a Rodrigo Battaglia header, stunning Benfica, who had been dominating from the onset. Nicolas Otamendi was then brought down in the box and Benfica earned a penalty following a VAR review and Di Maria coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to cut the goal deficit down to one at the stroke of halftime. Benfica were down to 10 in the 70th after Bellotti was shown a straight red card for a high kick in the back of the head of Ayrton Costa. The Portuguese side, however, levelled six minutes from time when Otamendi found the back of the net with a powerful header. The result kept the six-time Copa Libertadores champions' hopes alive to advance into the knockout phase, which would be a boost for the tournament as South American fans are expected to bring the biggest amount of passion into the stadiums.
