Minnesota's winter snow total lags more than 20 inches below average

CBS News07-02-2025

MINNEAPOLIS — Despite the frigid temperatures so far this winter, the amount of snowfall in Minnesota is still significantly below average.
Through the first week of February, the state usually sees about 32 inches of snow. As of Friday afternoon, a measly 10.9 inches have been recorded.
A storm system Friday night into Saturday could bring between 2 and 6.5 inches of accumulation to the metro, according to the WCCO NEXT Weather Team, but even the high end keeps this winter's total well below average through early February.
Aside from a snowstorm on Dec. 19 that dropped 5.5 inches at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, officials have reported less than 1 inch of accumulation every day this winter.
This winter's snow totals are still above where we were this time in 2024 when we only had 7.3 inches of snow. On Valentine's Day that year, a storm system dropped around 7 inches of snow, doubling the state's total.
The lack of snow this year has made it difficult for winter enthusiasts to enjoy outdoor activities. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails are closed for riders.
The 2025 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has been postponed after organizers canceled last year.

Drake And PARTYNEXTDOOR Announce Summer 2025 Overseas Tour '$ome $pecial $hows 4 U'

Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR have one of the most popular projects of the year, and now they're bringing the function overseas. The duo recently announced a joint tour, $ome $pecial $hows 4 U, with stops in Europe and the United Kingdom. They let the world know they'll be hitting the road once again via Instagram in a collaborative post with the Drake Related page earlier this week. Their string of performances will kick off with the 6 God's three-night headlining set at Wireless Festival in London, England, from July 11th to July 13th. Drizzy will be joined by PND and Summer Walker the first night, 'The Mandem' on the second, and Burna Boy and Vybz Kartel on the final evening. Given his affinity for UK rappers and previous collaborations with Central Cee, Dave, Skepta, and more, it is easy to assume who will be part of 'The Mandem' joining him for the second Wireless Festival show. They'll then take a quick break before making stops in Birmingham, Manchester, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, and Berlin. The tour will end in September with two shows in Hamburg, Germany. Tickets go on sale this Friday (June 6) on either or This will be Drake's second tour of 2025, following his trek through Australia back in February. The Anita Max Win tour went viral several times for him sporting a hoodie with bullet holes that had smoke coming out of them, and him making several speeches about the fact that he is 'still alive' despite all he endured in 2024 with the rap beef versus Kendrick Lamar and other rappers. The tour was unfortunately cut short due to scheduling conflicts, but the 38-year-old artist promised Australia that he wouldn't let another decade pass by before coming back to perform. PARTYNEXTDOOR joined him down under right around when they released their joint album $ome $exy $ongs 4 U on Valentine's Day. $$$4U is a 21-song effort that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit 'Nokia.' The LP featured Pimmie, Yebba, and Chino Pacas. Listen below. Watch: Pigeons flying through cabin disrupt Delta flight out of MSP

It reads like the tepid first draft for an airborne Samuel L. Jackson thriller. A Delta flight headed to Madison from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was disrupted by pigeons on a plane. On Saturday, May 24, two pigeons made their way into the main cabin of Delta Flight 2348, causing no small amount of chaos. Tom Caw, a passenger on the flight, posted a video of the incident to Instagram, saying they heard another passenger inform a flight attendant that there was a pigeon on board. The pilot got on the intercom and "said he had no experience with this situation." They returned the plane to the gate, and staff removed the pigeon. However, back on the runway, another interloping bird was discovered. "Pilot said when he radioed the control tower about us coming back due to a pigeon, the guy said that was a first for him," Caw wrote on Instagram. "Pilot told him it was the second time for him—the first being half an hour earlier." Delta issued an apology for the situation, even though it's not clear how the airline could have done anything about it. "Delta appreciates the careful actions of our people and our customers to safely remove two birds from the aircraft prior to departure, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel," the company tells Bring Me the News in a statement. The flight, which had 119 passengers and five crew members, arrived in Madison just 56 minutes later than it was scheduled, according to a Delta representative. That's a pretty good turnaround for a flight with two separate pigeon incidents.

Wildfire-stricken Minnesota communities rally as blazes sustain 1 week on

Cool weather has provided a boost to crews fighting the wildfires in northeastern Minnesota. But after more than a week since the fires began, the fight is far from over. The two largest wildfires — the Jenkins Creek and Camp House fires — are still blazing, and St. Louis County is now in a state of emergency and disaster. St. Louis County is also among several northeastern counties under a red flag warning until Tuesday night due to "strong winds and low humidity levels," according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The Jenkins Creek and Camp House fires finally have some containment — 6% and 40%, respectively — while the Munger Shaw Fire is almost fully contained, according to the Eastern Area Incident Management Team. Overall, more than 30,000 acres have been scorched in the northland, and more than 150 buildings have been destroyed. As the two largest fires rage on near Brimson, the community gathered on Monday evening at Aurora-Hoyt Senior High School. With so much uncertainty, it was an opportunity for displaced people and those in evacuation zones to get some clarity. "On the map they kind of showed us where they're at and how they do things and the progress they've made and the factors that play into that, because to be honest, I had no idea about fires or how you fight them or anything," said Brad Engstrom, of Hoyt Lakes. Some homeowners evacuated from the Camp House Fire were allowed to return to their properties, but with a warning they may have to leave again. "Get people to stand in front of the maps, show us where your property's at, talk about what's going on and answer questions directly and try to get them the help that they need," said Micah Bell, of the Eastern Area Incident Management Team. Meanwhile, businesses up north are banding together to support the hundreds of firefighters putting in long hours. Competitors are even joining forces to help feed crews on the front lines and behind the scenes. Businesses are joining forces to help feed crews on the front lines and behind the scenes. One market has delivered more than 750 box lunches, while a barbecue restaurant has served 300 firefighters. "They were looking for caterers to do it. Of course we said yes. I'll be honest, I like started tearing up, it was awesome," said Paul Sapyta, owner of Room at the Table Catering. "They were like, 'No one has ever done this.' And it was really, really cool to hear that and get closer to my competitors."
