
Tariffs Either Can't, Won't, Or Shouldn't Re-shore Manufacturing Jobs

Despite the unanimous ruling from the Court of International Trade, the Supreme Court will likely decide whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act empowers President Trump to levy global tariffs. As this process will take time to play out, economic uncertainty will persist for the foreseeable future.
What isn't uncertain is the adverse consequences that these tariffs will have. One oft-cited justification for the tariffs is the need to reinvigorate domestic manufacturing in the U.S. While this justification has no merit, something we return to later, the tariffs are not confined to products whose production can be re-shored. Products, especially agricultural products, that cannot be produced domestically are also targeted.
Take coffee as an example. Hawaii is the only state in the country that produces coffee. During the 2023-24 growing season, Hawaii produced about 17 million pounds of coffee, which is down 26% compared to the 2022-23 growing season. This may sound like a lot, but we consume 1.62 billion pounds of coffee every year. Therefore, the U.S. can domestically produce only about 1 percent of our annual coffee consumption.
Tariffs or not, we will have to continue importing 99% of our desired coffee if we want to continue enjoying our daily cup of Joe (actually, for the average person, it's 3 cups). Much of the coffee we consume is from Latin America, which would face a 10% tariff, but imports from Vietnam (the 2nd largest global grower) face a potential 46% tariff and imports from Indonesia (the 4th largest grower) face a 32% duty. Even if all imports were subject to the 10% tariff minimum, the imposition of Trump's tariffs equate to an additional $820 million cost that all coffee drinkers will have to pay.
Coffee is far from the only example. Spices, a commodity we often take for granted, are also generally grown in other countries because they cannot be economically produced in the U.S.
For instance, cinnamon is primarily grown in Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia with essentially no production in the U.S. Beyond a popular flavoring for coffee and ingredient in many baked goods, there are several potential health benefits linked to cinnamon including being an antioxidant, helping manage blood sugar, and having anti-inflammatory properties. The same constraints apply to the black pepper, which is mostly grown in tropical regions such as Vietnam, Indian, and Brazil. The U.S. currently imports virtually all our domestic consumption.
Since the U.S. cannot source our own cinnamon or black pepper due to the climate required to grow these commodities, consumers will either have to pay the higher tariffs or reduce their total consumption of these desired spices, whether from a retailer or a restaurant. Overall, the U.S. imported $2.4 billion in spices in 2024. Since spices are traded on a global market, it is likely that the cost of the tariffs will be passed on to U.S. consumers. Consequently, even a 10% tariff could impose a $240 million cost on U.S. consumers. Given the origin of most spices, the actual costs would likely be significantly higher.
While the reshoring excuse clearly makes no sense for agricultural products that we cannot produce referred to as 'unavailable nature resources,' it does not follow that the reshoring argument is valid simply because the products can be produced in the U.S. In fact, leveraging the global trading system enables companies to invest in creating higher-valued jobs in the U.S.
Take the iPhone as an example. Apple designs and engineers its iPhones at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. These tasks require highly skilled workers and create high paying U.S. based jobs. According to Glassdoor, Apple Engineers earn an average total pay of nearly $180,000 annually.
President Trump seems to ignore these jobs and is focusing on the physical manufacturing of the iPhone. For instance, he stated in a Truth Social post 'I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone's that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.'
The average salary for a smartphone assembler is around $36,000 a year ($18 per hour). Therefore, despite the large number of high paying jobs the company creates, the President wants Apple to create more low paying jobs in the U.S. To get his way, the President is willing to harm the company risking the growth in higher paying jobs, not to mention his willingness to impose higher costs on consumers.
Importantly, the U.S. does a great deal of manufacturing in the U.S. already. In 2024, the real value of total U.S. manufacturing output was $2.4 trillion. This is 12% higher than the total produced in 2020. This activity creates well paying jobs for Americans because it focuses on those activities we do well. It does not force companies to produce things that can be produced more efficiently elsewhere.
Regardless of their legal merit, President Trump's global tariffs are economically ill advised, particularly on products that will never be grown in America. Yet, as his doubling of the steel tariffs indicate, the President remains all in. As a result, even if the Supreme Court rules that the Administration has exceeded its authority, the current tariff follies will likely persist.
The problem, of course, is that tariffs either can't, won't, or shouldn't shift production back into the U.S. What they will do is increase costs for consumers and put higher paying jobs at risk.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security tried to revoke Harvard's Student and Exchange Visitor Program -- which allows the school to sponsor foreign students – but a federal judge issued a temporary order blocking the move. Trump justified the sudden move Wednesday by claiming Harvard has refused to provide information about international students, has "extensive entanglements with foreign countries," and has discriminated in their admissions practices. The proclamation also claimed crime rates have "drastically risen" at the school and requires the government to probe the potential misconduct of foreign students. "These concerns have compelled the Federal Government to conclude that Harvard University is no longer a trustworthy steward of international student and exchange visitor programs," the proclamation said.

I believe that Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) will win this race, and thanks to its unwavering growth, it will leave both of these two in the dust in the march toward $5 trillion. Just how quickly will Nvidia reach that valuation milestone? It may be quicker than you think. Nvidia's impressive rise can be tied to one trend: artificial intelligence (AI). Nvidia's primary products are graphics processing units (GPUs), which are high-powered computing devices that can process many calculations in parallel. GPUs can also be connected in clusters to amplify this effect, which is why you hear about AI supercomputing clusters being built with more than 100,000 GPUs. Nvidia is at the top of the GPU world, and most estimates point toward it having roughly a 90% market share. Few companies achieve that level of dominance, and no other company has ever been as dominant in a trend that is as important and quickly growing as AI. Nvidia's is truly an unprecedented story. That's why some investors (like me, in the past) underestimated Nvidia's potential. We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with AI, and AI has yet to be fully integrated into workflows or personal life. This will require an unbelievable amount of computing power, which benefits Nvidia. A report by Dell'Oro Group says that 's data center capital expenditures in 2024 reached $455 billion, and Nvidia believes that number will it $1 trillion by 2028. If that's the case, then Nvidia's growth is far from over, something that its fiscal first-quarter results showcased. One thing that slightly affected Nvidia in the quarter was the loss of its China business. On April 9, the Trump administration established new rules that prevented Nvidia from selling H20 chips designed to meet the United States' previous export restrictions to China. This chip accounted for $4.6 billion of sales in Q1, which ended April 27, and Nvidia missed out on $2.5 billion in additional sales. Furthermore, the company expects about $8 billion in sales to be lost during the second quarter. This is unfortunate for Nvidia and hampers its growth case, but it provides some interesting numbers. For comparison's sake, let's add the lost $2.5 billion in sales to Q1's total and the $8 billion in Q2's projection. Note: YOY = Year over year. For reference, during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, Nvidia's growth rate was 78%. This clearly indicates a trend: Growth is accelerating despite Nvidia's massive size if the H20 sales are added back in for a proper comparison. Another point to note is that Nvidia's management tends to beat its internal revenue guidance, so these figures may be a bit conservative. Regardless, if the U.S. government didn't create some headwinds for Nvidia, its stock would be soaring due to accelerating revenue, but that gets buried behind the China story. Regardless, I think this is a bullish sign for investors, and this growth will likely persist for some time. Wall Street currently projects Nvidia will grow its revenue by just 26% next year, but I think that is an underprojection. Even if it does match Wall Street's expectations, it will generate around $250 billion in revenue. At Nvidia's current price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, that would value the company at over $5 trillion, so if it meets expectations (which I think it will blow away), it could reach that $5 trillion level as soon as next year. That growth makes Nvidia a screaming buy right now, as I think there's another growth story kicking off that investors aren't ready for. Nationals from a dozen countries will be barred from entering the U.S. from Monday under a proclamation signed yesterday by President Donald Trump, who framed the decision as necessary to bolster national security and combat terrorism. Seven more countries will face partial travel restrictions. The 12 countries targeted in the ban are primarily in Africa or Asia. They are: Afghanistan, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. This is Morning Rundown, a weekday newsletter to start your day. Several of the countries regularly declined to accept the return of their nationals or had visa overstay rates the Trump administration deemed 'unacceptable,' according to the proclamation. There are some exemptions, including for any lawful permanent resident of the U.S., as well as diplomatic visas and immediate family immigrant visas, among others. In a White House video, Trump cited the recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, as justification for a renewed travel ban. But the suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, is from Egypt, and he entered the country on a tourist visa before he applied for asylum. During his first term, Trump similarly banned foreigners from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S., a move that the Supreme Court ultimately upheld in a split decision.
