James Taylor songs will fuel an upcoming stage musical, 'Fire & Rain'
Alicia Keys, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond — step aside. The next musical icon to turn their songs into a stage musical will be James Taylor.
Taylor's songs will fuel 'Fire & Rain,' a musical announced Monday, in development with a story by playwright and actor Tracy Letts and direction by Tony Award winner David Cromer.
'Fire and Rain' is one of Taylor's most iconic songs, released in 1970 on his second album, 'Sweet Baby James.' It reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other hits include 'You've Got a Friend' and 'How Sweet It Is.'
No timeline was revealed on when 'Fire & Rain' will be first staged.
Taylor has won six Grammys and is a member of both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Halls of Fame. He is the first artist to have a Billboard Top 10 album in each of the past six decades.
Letts won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for writing 'August: Osage County' and his other plays include 'Bug,' 'Killer Joe,' 'Superior Donuts' and 'The Minutes.' Cromer has directed two of Letts' works — 'Bug' and 'Man from Nebraska.'
Taylor joins a growing list of musical artists who have turned to the stage.
Parton is writing new songs to go along with some of her past hits and co-writing a stage story inspired by her life for a stage musical that she hopes to land on Broadway in 2026. Diamond, Keys, Michael Jackson, Carole King and Gloria and Emilio Estefan all got biographical musicals on Broadway.
Taylor will join such pop and rock luminaries as Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, The Go-Gos, Sting,Alanis Morissette, Dave Stewart, Edie Brickell, Trey Anastasio, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim and Bono and The Edge with Broadway scores.

Kara Young, already on a Broadway streak, could make Tony history with her role in 'Purpose'
Don't bother asking Kara Young which one of her roles is her favorite. They're all her favorite. 'Every single time I'm doing a show, I feel like it is the most important thing on the planet,' she says. 'I don't have a favorite. It's like this: Every, every single project has held its own weight.' Right now, the weighty project on her mind is Broadway 's celebrated 'Purpose,' Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' drawing-room drama at the Helen Hayes Theater about an accomplished Black family revealing its hypocrisy and fault lines during a snowed-in gathering. 'There's so much in this play,' says Young, who plays an outsider who witnesses the implosion. 'Like a lot of the great writers, he creates these universes in a line or the space between the words.' A tense family gathering 'Purpose' is set in the Jasper family's living room in an upper-middle-class neighborhood in Chicago. The patriarch is Pastor Solomon Jasper, a Civil Rights legend, and his steely wife, Claudine. They are reuniting with their two sons — Junior, a disgraced former state senator, recently released after serving a prison sentence for embezzling funds, and Naz, who fled divinity school and is now a nature photographer. Young plays Aziza, a Harlem-bred social worker who has been close friends with Naz but didn't know anything about his family. 'This kind of thing never happens to me! I never meet famous people and you've been famous this whole time?' she screams. Her awe quickly fades as sibling jealousies, parental frustrations, past sins and the pressures of legacy come tumbling out over a fraught dinner. There is some slapping. 'We are so susceptible to get angry with the people we love the most,' says Young. 'What we're seeing in the less than 12 hours of them being together for the first time in two years, they're sitting down and having dinner, and all of these things come up, as they often do.' Young poised to make history Young's work has earned her a Tony Award nomination and a chance to make history. Already the first Black person to be nominated four times consecutively, if she wins, she'll be the first Black performer to win two Tonys in a row. Young made her Broadway debut in 2021 in 'Clyde's,' was in 'Cost of Living' the next year and co-starred opposite Leslie Odom Jr. in 2024's 'Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch,' winning a Tony. Jacobs-Jenkins calls Aziz in his script a 'deeply perceptive person and empathetic' and that could also apply to Young, She says she closely identifies with her character in 'Purpose,' — they're both Harlem-bred advocates for others, hoping to make the planet better. 'I feel connected to that core of her,' says Young. 'Every single play I've done since my 10-minute play festivals, I'm always like, 'Wow, this feels like this can change the world,' you know? And I feel like at the core of Aziza, that's how she feels. She wants to change the world.' 'Purpose,' directed by Phylicia Rashad, also stars LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Harry Lennix, Jon Michael Hill, Alana Arenas and Glenn Davis. ' Joy and curiosity and enthusiasm' Hill, who as Naz also earned a Tony nomination for best lead male actor in a play, calls Young 'the heart and joy of our little family over there at the Helen Hayes.' 'She enters the building and she just makes time for everyone and is genuinely excited to see people and hear about how they're doing,' he says. 'I've really never seen anyone have as much room in their consciousness and their being for everyone she encounters. She approaches every day with joy and curiosity and enthusiasm.' If there's one story that shows who Young is, it would be from the day of the Met Gala, which she and cast members of 'Purpose' were invited, along with its playwright. That same day, Jacobs-Jenkins won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. Young found out while getting her makeup done and began screaming. When she got to the gala — a look-at-me moment, if there ever was one — she was a walking advertisement for the play. 'I told everybody, 'You have to come and see this play. He just won a Pulitzer!'' Hill was right behind her and smiling as Young made connections and introductions. 'She was just going up to everyone and introducing us and talking about our show and trying to get folks in the door.' Young made her 2016 stage debut in Patricia Ione Lloyd's play 'Pretty Hunger' at the Public Theater, a play about a 7-year-old Black girl who didn't know she was Black. The playwright told her she wrote it with Young in mind. 'Ione Lloyd is one of the people who really made me see myself as an artist,' she says. 'She's the one that kind of set a path for me in a really beautiful way.' Next up for Young is the movie 'Is God Is,' which playwright Aleshea Harris is directing from her own 2018 stage play. Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox and Janelle Monáe are in the cast. Young calls it 'a spaghetti Western-meets-Tarantino-meets-the Greeks.' Next summer on Broadway, she'll star in a revival of 'The Whoopi Monologues' opposite Kerry Washington. After that, who knows? 'I don't know what's next, but I can't wait, whatever that is,' she says. 'If something comes along, it's about jumping into the next thing. 'Ruined' village on slate hillside hints at brutal House of the Dragon scenes

More info An iron ring has been thrown around a slate mine on the edge of Eryri for season three of HBO's House of the Dragon (HoTD). As set construction picks up pace, the whole of Dinorwig Quarry has been placed off limits with security guards posted around the massive complex. Sneak pictures of the work undertaken so far suggests a ruined village is being built. A series of fire-damaged carts and boxes have been brought to the site along with piles of charred timber. It's speculated the latter will be used to recreate buildings that were used in series two - showing the devastation wrought by a fire-breathing dragon. It's widely assumed the quarry, near Llanberis, is again standing in as a HoTD backdrop as Harrenhal Castle, the largest fortification in the fictional country of Westeros. included a military encampment and a modified slate incline where a dragon was shown perching. Three other sites in the area are also rumoured to be filming locations for the Game of Thrones prequel series. Two are thought to be in the Nant Peris pass at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), with a third by Llyn Padarn, Llanberis. As the rest of George RR Martin's 'Fire & Blood' storyline contains some spectacularly brutal battles, signs point to all-out war in HoTD season three. (Image: John Horrigan) The main quarry footpath was closed on Monday morning (June 2) and this will now stay shut until Monday, June 17. Security guards have been posted at both quarry entrances – from the Nant Peris side and from the Dinorwig Bus Terminus. 'But there are more all around the quarry to prevent unauthorised access,' said local resident John Horrigan, whose land borders the quarry. 'They are seriously enclosing the site and not just at the main entrances. 'The producers have been quite clever this time. For season two, they didn't close off the quarry completely until filming began, making it easier for some people to see the sets being built. This year they want to ensure no interruptions, so have closed off the quarry earlier.' (Image: John Horrigan) Before the quarry was declared completely off-limits, Mr Horrigan snuck inside to get an idea of what's been done so far. Set construction appears to be taking place at three locations within the quarry, including what he understands will be a 'destroyed village'. 'This is in the same place where they had the battle encampment in the last series, with buildings, tents and catapults. Already some props have been brought on site - and they're all burnt. Even though the props are made off-site, you get a strong burning smell as soon as you reach the area. 'Lots of burnt timber are also piled up on wooden pallets ready for set construction. This morning, two 18-tonne trucks and an articulated lorry brought in more crates, ready to be hoisted into position and unpacked by construction crews. 'It looks like they are recreating the village from the last series, only this time after it's been ruined and burnt to the ground by a dragon.' (Image: Carwyn Vaughan) Another set involves a tunnel leading to a separate pit that can't be viewed from elsewhere in the quarry. A new flight of steps has been built to an upper level, on which scaffolding is being erected. 'It's massive,' said Mr Horrigan. 'They've spend weeks building it, with erecting safety rails, steps and towers. I don't know if that's where some of the actors will be filmed, or whether it's they're putting cameras to film the canyon below, but a battle scene is predicted.' Another set involves one of the site's former quarry mills: a huge wooden facade has been erected as if to mimic a medieval hall. 'It's amazing to think they're only filming for four days and yet have to spend a month building the sets,' said Mr Horrigan. 'It's definitely bigger than last time and the whole process is taking longer.' 'I came across four rocks that looked so real you wouldn't know they were fake even if you stood by them. I wonder how many people thought they were part of a new rockfall. Those in the know will point to the sandbags on top to stop them rolling away!' (Image: John Horrigan) In Nant Peris, beneath Yr Wyddfa, no sites have been formally identified yet. However the Union Rock area at the western end of Llyn Padarn has been closed off. Last year the same area was used as a storage area when filming took place on Llyn Padarn for Netflix's The Witcher fantasy series. Could the lake again be used as a backdrop, this time for HoTD? In season two, multiple sites in Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy doubled for Westeros. At Dinorwig, site preparation continues until Monday, June 9. Filming starts the following day and continues until Friday, June 13. During this four-day period, the road to the Allt Ddu bus terminus will be closed. Site reinstatement then takes place until Friday, June 20. Another filming day is set for Thursday, June 26. This will also involve a 'few days' either side for preparation and site reinstatement. Location and security crews are reported to be staying in Caernarfon, while safety staff are said to be overnighting in Bangor.
