Why Joann fabric and craft stores are set to close in South Jersey
Three fabric and craft stores are to close in South Jersey as part of approximately 500 shutdowns nationwide, the financially ailing retailer Joann has disclosed.
Joann plans to shutter 'underperforming' stores in Mount Laurel, Deptford and Mays Landing, according to a motion filed Feb. 12 in the firm's bankruptcy case. One area store is to remain open in Cherry Hill.
'This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,' the Ohio-based company said in a statement.
Big questions: Path ahead is uncertain for Big Lots
Joann, founded more than 80 years ago, describes itself as 'the nation's category leader in sewing and fabrics with one of the largest arts and crafts offerings.' It currently has more than 800 stores in 49 states.
'Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for Joann,' the company's statement said.
Joann also wants to close three stores in Lawrenceville, Toms River and Succasunna, Morris County. That would leave it with five locations across the state.
Joann filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 15, saying it hoped to sell off assets to improve its finances.
The store closings are subject to the approval of a federal bankruptcy judge in Delaware.
If the judge approves, Joann said, close-out sales are to begin 'immediately.'

Hartville Thrift Shoppe takes full ownership of center, making renovations
The Hartville Thrift Shoppe now owns the entire center in which it operates and is reconfiguring the space to better suit its needs. Executive Director Phil Stauffer said the store at 938 W. Maple St. has grown over the years — evidenced by a nearly packed parking lot and bustling store on a recent Monday morning. The agency purchased the northeast portion of the property, which is split into four commercial units, from GentleBrook in April. Initially, GentleBrook owned three of the four units. Now that the thrift shop owns all four, Stauffer said, walls will soon be removed to connect the store to the adjacent Front Porch Cafe. A room between the two, formerly used by GentleBrook, is full of bookshelves awaiting the thrift shop's literature section. 'We hope to design the space so there's easy access between the café and the thrift shop and there's some synergies between the two organizations," Stauffer said. The nonprofit plans to move its production area, where staff members sort and price donations, to its on-site warehouse, which will have heating, ventilation and air conditioning installed in the future. The warehouse storage will be moved to an outbuilding and, sometime next year, that will allow the thrift shop to open the current staff parking area for additional customer parking. 'It won't gain a whole lot of space, but it'll enable us to create more customer parking," Stauffer said. He considers the partnership with GentleBrook to have been a blessing as their growth has aligned. The thrift shop and cafe, which is operated by a third party, employ GentleBrook clients. GentleBrook serves people with developmental disabilities and operates residential services, adult day programs and other initiatives. The nonprofit, in collaboration with the thrift shop, purchased the former Hartville Hardware center southwest of West Maple Street and Milan Avenue SW in 2012. The change in the center's ownership will not affect GentleBrook, the Lake Township FISH pantry, and the Front Porch Cafe operations there, GentleBrook CEO Norm Wengerd said. 'As time went on and the thrift shop grew and needed more space, Gentlebrook had some other opportunities to move some of our programs and provide the space for the thrift shop to acquire those condominium units back from Gentlebrook so they could continue to grow and meet the needs that they have for their ministries there," Wengerd said. GentleBrook has purchased other properties in recent years, including the former Greentown Intermediate School at 3330 State St. NW in Lake Township. Wengerd said the nonprofit has been exploring potential uses and partners for the building since buying it in the fall of 2024. "We think that there's a good opportunity there to create a bit of a hub to bring the community together and be able to provide some additional services there right in the Greentown community," he said. GentleBrook plans to host an open house at the former school sometime in July. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce in May hosted several grand openings and ribbon cuttings in coordination with area businesses. They include: You-niquely Yours at 7223 Whipple Ave. NW — The shop is an expansion of Amore Services, which provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The store offers personalized gifts and handmade home decor. Discount Custom Cabinets at 5553 Whipple Ave. NW, Suite 6 — The ready-to-assemble cabinet company opened a new location in Jackson Township. The family-owned business has operated in the Canton area for the past decade. Anytime Fitness at 4645 Fulton Drive NW — The gym chain opened a new Belden Center location in Jackson Township in late May. Additional businesses also planned grand openings in June: Supreme Cellular Repair, a family-owned electronics repair shop at 2846 Whipple Ave. NW, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. June 12. The company specializes in micro soldering and board-level repairs, according to owner Leo Alvarez. Apex Skin, a Northeast Ohio dermatology provider, will celebrate its second office at 4240 Munson St. NW with a grand opening on June 12. "Building B" is the former Tri-County Dermatology location acquired by Apex in 2023 and is about a block from "Building A." 'We are incredibly honored to receive this award,' Andrew Williams, owner and dealer principal of Williams Toyota Lift, said in a prepared statement. The family-owned business also received two other Toyota honors. The dealership received the Sales Excellence Award, and Dianne Williams received the Marketing Manager of the Year Award. 'I am pleased the Fisher team will join KAG Canada, who share the same values, commitment to customer service and recognition of our specialized team who have been instrumental in achieving our success,' Fisher Transport CEO Ken MacDonald said in a prepared statement. KAG Canada will take on 60 professional drivers and 15 operational and administrative staff members, according to the announcement. The company's fleet will grow by 60 tractors and 70 specialized trailers. "When we were provided with the opportunity to partner with the Fisher team, we immediately knew it would be a great fit for KAG," Grant Mitchell, president and chief operating officer of the Kenan Advantage Group, said in a prepared statement. "Together our team will execute this strategic journey of offering coast-to-coast bulk transportation services to all of our customers.' SOLVE FSHD and Modalis Announce Strategic Collaboration to Develop an Innovative CRISPR-Based Epigenome Editing Treatment for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy
VANCOUVER, British Columbia & TOKYO & WALTHAM, Mass., June 08, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SOLVE FSHD, a venture philanthropy organization dedicated to accelerating treatments for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), and Modalis Therapeutics Corporation (TSE 4883; "Modalis"), a CRISPR-based epigenome editing therapeutics company focused on rare genetic diseases, today announced a strategic collaboration to develop an innovative therapy for FSHD, a debilitating muscular disorder affecting approximately 1 million individuals worldwide. The novel therapy leverages Modalis's proprietary CRISPR-GNDM® (Guide Nucleotide-Directed Modulation) technology, which can dynamically modulate gene expression without introducing double-strand DNA breaks. SOLVE FSHD will provide strategic funding to support the development of Modalis's MDL-103 program. MDL-103 is an innovative therapeutic solution that continuously suppresses the expression of the DUX4 gene, the toxic disease-causing gene for FSHD, which becomes abnormally activated due to epigenetic changes in the D4Z4 repeat region on chromosome 4. MDL-103 is designed to have durable activity over long periods of time under the control of a strong, muscle-specific promoter, and is delivered to the muscles of patients using a muscle-tropic AAV delivery system. Modalis's CRISPR-GNDM® technology has the potential to transform the treatment of FSHD by epigenetically silencing the expression of DUX4. "SOLVE FSHD is pleased to partner with Modalis and to add them to our diverse portfolio of collaborators that are advancing potential therapies for FSHD," stated Eva Chin, Executive Director of SOLVE FSHD. "SOLVE FSHD identified Modalis as a company committed to finding a cure for this debilitating condition. We were impressed by their unique approach to targeting the epigenetic cause of FSHD, using a platform technology that has shown promise in other neuromuscular diseases. We believe that the support from SOLVE FSHD will allow Modalis to accelerate the advancement of MDL-103 into clinical trials." "We are delighted to be working in partnership with SOLVE FSHD and greatly appreciate the invaluable support for the development of MDL-103," said Haru Morita, CEO of Modalis. "This strategic collaboration is a strong validation of Modalis's CRISPR-GNDM® technology and our MDL-103 program. As a pioneer in this technology, we have demonstrated promising long-term drug efficacy in mouse models, shown durable target engagement and safety in non-human primates, and exhibited excellent biodistribution in neuromuscular disorders. We believe that MDL-103, which incorporates CRISPR-GNDM® technology with a muscle tropic AAV delivery system, has significant potential as a breakthrough treatment for FSHD." About SOLVE FSHD SOLVE FSHD is a venture philanthropic organization established to catalyze innovation and accelerate key research in finding a cure for FSHD. Established by renowned Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, Chip Wilson, the Wilson family has committed $100 million to kick-start funding into projects that support the organizations' mission to solve FSHD by 2027. The goal of SOLVE FSHD is to find a solution that can slow down or stop muscle degeneration, increase muscle regeneration and strength, and improve the quality of life for those living with FSHD, visit About Modalis Therapeutics Corporation Modalis was founded in 2016 and conducts research and development activities in Massachusetts, USA. Evri to hire thousands more couriers after deal with DHL
Evri is set to expand its courier network with a recruitment drive for 5,000 new couriers, as the company looks to compete in the business letter market. The Yorkshire-based parcel firm recently announced a collaboration with DHL's UK ecommerce division, creating one of the UK's largest delivery networks. The addition of these new roles will bring Evri's total number of self-employed couriers to 33,000. These positions will be available across the UK, with a focus on areas such as Plymouth, Bury, Hastings, Dover, and Scarborough. Approximately 1,000 of the new jobs will be permanent, while the remainder will be flexible roles designed to accommodate the increased demand during the summer and other peak delivery periods. Couriers who commit to working five or more days a week, including Saturday and Sunday, are also given the chance to opt in to its revamped 'Evri Plus' scheme, which includes paid holiday and automatic enrolment into a pension scheme. Evri, which was previously part of the Hermes parcel group, was bought by US private equity firm Apollo for around £2.7 billion last year. It announced plans last month to merge with rival DHL's UK ecommerce business to create a combined company set to deliver more than one billion parcels and one billion letters each year. The deal means Evri will enter the UK business letter market for the first time, bolstering its competition to Royal Mail. Evri has spent £32 million on improving its customer service offering and has seen an improvement in its ratings over recent years, but has said there is 'more to do' to improve with customers continuing to report delivery issues. Chief executive Martijn de Lange said: 'We know that service, reliability and quality are critical factors for our clients and consumers, and so by expanding our self-employed network further, we remain focused on delivering in each of those areas.' Couriers typically earn about £20.90 an hour on average, according to Evri. Sign in to access your portfolio
