Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos names the best midfielder in the world

Metro06-05-2025

Real Madrid and Germany legend Toni Kroos has picked out Barcelona star Pedri as the best midfielder in world football.
Kroos retired from all forms of football last summer after an illustrious career at the top spanning nearly two decades.
The German is remembered as one of the finest midfield players of his generation having won practically every accolade in the game, including the 2014 World Cup, four La Liga titles and five Champions League crowns.
But Kroos' retirement leaves a void for the next wave of midfielders to step up and make a name for themselves as the leaders of the next generation, with a changing of the guard taking place at his former club Real Madrid.
There remains uncertainty over the future of Kroos' long-time partner in crime, Luka Modric, and the likes of Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga
and Arda Guler will be expected to take up the baton over the coming seasons at the Bernabeu.
But according to Kroos, Madrid's arch-rivals Barcelona boast the most complete midfielder on the planet in Pedri.
The Spain international has been firing on all cylinders, with Barca looking to add the Champions League and La Liga to their haul this season having already lifted the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.
'For me, a player like Pedri is more important than Lamine Yamal, Raphinha or Lewandowski,' Kroos said.
'They may decide the results of matches, but to do that, Pedri is currently the best player in the world in his position.
'He's a player you will miss when he's not playing, whoever you are playing against.
'He doesn't just score goals or provide assists, he offers solutions.'
Kroos has kept a close eye on Pedri throughout Barca's European campaign and believes the Spaniard has got the better of every opponent he has come up against.
'I have been watching what Pedri is doing this season. In the Champions League, he's better than his opponents in every game,' he added.
'In La Liga, the difference [between him and his opponents] is only more extreme.
'If you lose a player like him, you will notice. He's the best.
'He's one of the few midfielders in his position that has the ability to beat dribble past players when there is no space.
'A player like Pedri helps you in every area of the game.' More Trending
Looking back on his own tussles with Pedri, Kroos remembered how the Barcelona academy graduate ran rings around him during one particular El Clasico meeting.
'I experienced it myself, once especially. He demolished us [Madrid] at home,' Kroos continued.
'Once or twice I thought I could get to him, because he doesn't look so quick, but he dribbles so well and I couldn't even stop him with a foul.
'He's not like [Lionel] Messi, whose speed of movement you see. Pedri doesn't seem so quick, but he really is.' Is Pedri the best midfielder in the world?

Why Jude Bellingham missed England training ahead of Senegal friendly

Jude Bellingham was the only England player to miss training on Monday ahead of their international friendly against Senegal. The Three Lions maintained their 100 per cent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday with a 1-0 win away to Andorra. Their 'boring' and uninspiring performance left a lot to be desired however, with Thomas Tuchel looking for major improvement on Tuesday night when they take on Senegal. In his pre-match press conference, Tuchel hinted he would heavily rotate his side and said he had no new injury issues to worry about. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins had pulled out of the squad before the Andorra game 'as a precaution due to a minor injury'. However, as the 25-man squad trained ahead of the friendly at the City Ground in Nottingham, there was one notable absentee in the form of Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham. The Football Association have since announced: '24 players are out training at St. George's Park this afternoon. 'Jude Bellingham is absent to attend a family funeral and will return to camp later today.' The 21-year-old started the win over Andorra but, like many of his teammates, struggled to make an impact and was replaced in the dying minutes by Morgan Gibbs-White. He will be available for selection against Senegal after which he will link back up with Real Madrid as they begin their Club World Cup campaign in the USA next week. It's been a big week for the Bellingham family with Jude's younger brother Jobe set to follow in his footsteps and sign for Borussia Dortmund. The 19-year-old played a key role in Sunderland's promotion campaign last season and was linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. But he'll be playing in Germany next season after a record-breaking transfer fee was agreed between the Black Cats and Dortmund. Read the full story here. Dropping a few hints about his line-up against the African giants, Tuchel confirmed that Bukayo Saka will start having not been able to play the Arsenal star before because of injury and fitness issues. More Trending 'Very excited [to have Saka available],' the German said in his pre-match press conference. 'I could see he worked hard to come back from his injury. He had this minor discomfort in the last match which worried me a bit. 'He had just one training session with us. A full session and one half training session. We decided to not let him play, to not take any risks. 'But he trains with a smile, he had [on Sunday] an amazing training session with a lot of quality. He will start. Of course he's a key player for us.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Belgium v Wales: World Cup 2026 qualifier

Update: Date: 2025-06-09T17:45:47.000Z Title: Preamble Content: If Wales are to qualify for the men's World Cup for just the third time in their history, getting something from this crucial qualifier will likely be a huge reason why. Despite a poor start to Belgium's campaign – a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia, their only game to date – Rudi Garcia's side are the overwhelming favourites to top Group J and claim the only automatic qualification spot. In a group also containing Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein, can a team that contains Kevin De Bruyne, Youri Tielemans, Romelu Lukaku and Jérémy Doku really manage to mess this up? Wales will be hoping the answer is yes. Craig Bellamy's side have made a good start to their campaign, drawing away at North Macedonia and beating Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein. A draw or a win in Brussels tonight would be an epic achievement but not completely off the cards. It has happened before and it can happen again, the spirit of Hal Robson-Kanu in 2016 looms large. Kick-off: 7.45pm BST.

Manchester City sign Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves for £31m

He becomes City's first major signing of the summer, with AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders also set to join. Manchester City have signed Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri for £31million (Martin Rickett/PA) Ait-Nouri will be eligible for the upcoming Club World Cup later this month, with City also looking to get Reijnders done in time. 'I am incredibly happy and honoured to have joined Manchester City. City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to play for the club is a dream come true,' he said. 'I am also so excited about working with and learning from Pep (Guardiola) and his coaching team and getting to train and play alongside such a world class group of players. 'I'm young and I came here to improve a lot. I need to learn and improve my football for sure – it's why I chose this big challenge. Relax… we have an announcement to make 🔊 — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 9, 2025 'I know I can improve my football and being in these kind of conditions with this team and this manager, for sure I will improve my football.' Ait-Nouri has spent five years at Wolves, initially arriving on loan from Angers before signing permanently for £14.9m in 2021. He is City's first left-back specialist since Benjamin Mendy, who played his final game for the club almost four years ago. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake, Josko Gvardiol and – most recently – Nico O'Reilly have been among the players to fill the position since. 'Rayan is a player that as a club we have been following closely for quite some time and we are delighted he has joined us,' said director of football Hugo Viana. 'He already has extensive Premier League experience and has also demonstrated his quality at international level with Algeria. 'We feel sure that he will be an excellent addition to our squad and that working alongside Pep and his coaching staff will help develop his game even further. After six seasons with the Club, Scott Carson will leave Manchester City when his contract expires this summer. We would like to thank Scott for his hard work and dedication and wish him the very best of luck for the future 🩵 — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 9, 2025 'And at just 24 he is someone we feel sure will help us in our objective to bring more success to the club.' Veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson is to leave the club when his contract expires this summer. The 39-year-old made just two senior appearances in a six-year stint but was involved in squads that collected 12 trophies, including the Champions League in 2023.
