England make Lauren James decision as Sarina Wiegman gives update on star
Lauren James is in line to make her comeback in England colours against Jamaica on Sunday after missing nearly three months of football with a hamstring injury
England manager Sarina Wiegman has stressed the importance of managing Lauren James ' minutes as the Lionesses star prepares to make her long-awaited comeback. James has been out of action since picking up an injury on international duty in early April, but has been named in Wiegman's squad for this summer's European Championships.
The Chelsea ace is in contention to feature against Jamaica on Sunday as the Lionesses take on the Reggae Girlz in the final match before their Euros defence gets underway on July 5. The 2022 winners have been drawn in a group with France, the Netherlands and Wales for the tournament in Switzerland.
"We have to manage the minutes," Wiegman said ahead of Sunday's match at the King Power Stadium in Leicester. "She's doing really well, but of course she hasn't played games yet. But she's in a good place.
"She will likely come off the bench, we can manage that a bit. She showed up on the training session really well. She could cope with loads and recover from loads. Her performance has been really good.
"She's ready, we're just still growing into minutes. This is the first time in a while that she's coming into a game and [she needs to] get through that. Then we'll take it from there towards the tournament."
James' former club team-mate Jess Carter also spoke about the 23-year-old on Saturday morning. "For me she's a good friend and we all know she is an incredible footballer, but I think the most impressive thing for me is just that she has come back in like a new player," said Carter, who now plays her club football for Gotham FC in the United States.
"Maybe the injury was a bit of a blessing in disguise, in terms of that she just looks so fresh, so sharp, and she really impacts the game and the team. And she is a pain to play against. Good luck to any of the other players having to play against her in the tournament."
The Euros holders face a tough group, but FA chief executive Mark Bullingham insists Wiegman's future is secure whatever happens at the tournament. The England boss followed up her Euros triumph with a run to the 2023 World Cup final, and is under contract until 2027.
"We think she's a fantastic coach and has done a brilliant job for us," Bullingham said on Friday. "We are delighted she's with us until at least 2027. We haven't looked beyond that timescale yet or engaged in those conversations.
"We feel we have us locked into this tournament and the next and that feels very good for us. That's not to say we wouldn't have a conversation at some point in the future but it's too early for that really.'

Maresca questions US hosting Club World Cup
When asked how the one-hour-53-minute stoppage impacted Chelsea's match against Benfica in the Club World Cup, Enzo Maresca's response was: "This is not football."The manager seemed to question whether the US was a suitable host for Fifa competitions, like the Club World Cup, one year before the 2026 World Cup is hosted across North may have defeated Benfica 4-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals, but the match was the sixth to be suspended because of seasonal summer thunderstorms. A near two-hour delay looked like it might cost Chelsea, who had not conceded a shot on target and went ahead through Reece James's inventive free-kick, a match they looked set to win."For 85 minutes we were in control of the game. We didn't concede anything; we created chances enough to win the game. And then after the break the game changed completely," Maresca said while referring to a shift in momentum in which Angel di Maria equalised from the penalty spot."For me personally, it's not football. You cannot be inside for two hours. It is something completely new. I can understand that for security reasons, you are to suspend the game. But if you suspend six, seven games that means that probably is not the right place to do this competition."Players, staff and supporters were immediately pulled indoors because of extreme weather, in this case because thunderstorms were detected within an eight-mile radius of the venue, in line with US safety regained control in extra time when Benfica youngster Gianluca Prestianni was sent off, allowing Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to ensure victory in a match that lasted four hours 38 minute from the opening to final asked to clarify where specifically his anger was aimed, Maresca added: "This is a fantastic competition. The Club World Cup is top; we are happy to be in the last eight."It's not normal to suspend a game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Probably zero. In Europe, how many games? Zero." How Chelsea coped with the stoppage Chelsea players Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo were furious when pulled off the pitch - as was Maresca - having been on course to win with only five minutes of normal time re-entering the operations and dressing room area, players took turns to cycle on exercise bikes to keep their muscles warm and did kick-ups to stay fresh at the Bank of America explained the mood and why it impacted performance, adding: "So two hours inside - people speak with the family outside [to check] if they were good with the security. People eating, laughing, talking on their mobiles. It was two hours. That's why I said it's not football."James added: "It was quite disruptive when you're in the flow of the game. Lots of substitutions - trying to get warm and stay warm. It was difficult and the climate was very hot and humid."A senior Chelsea official admitted to confusion and relief around the senior staff after the match. The problem of competitive integrity Chelsea losing control because of a weather event highlights problems of competitive integrity, not just at the Club World Cup but also for the 2026 World teams will likely suffer the same stoppages which could impact participants or cause shifts in momentum or freak puts into question competitive integrity itself which, in football, refers to the concept of fairness and whether the conditions allow the deserving team to win. Is US in the summer suitable? This was the second longest stoppage of the tournament, with Benfica having had another two-hour stoppage delaying the start of their match against Auckland City. There have been six similar stoppages in five different cities, including Mamelodi Sundowns against Ulsan HD, which also happened in Orlando, because of heavy rain and there were long pauses in the second half of Palmeiras v Al-Ahly in New Jersey (40 minutes), Salzburg v Pachuca in Cincinnati (90 minutes) and Boca Juniors v Auckland City in Nashville (50 minutes). Chelsea are also one of many teams to fall victim to extreme heat. Maresca said it was "impossible" to conduct a normal training session at their previous base in of the best stadiums in the US and Canada have roofs, like Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but many do is the only ground selected with such a covered roof in the Club World Cup but further stadiums in Vancouver, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Toronto are covered for next summer's World that tournament has been expanded to 48 teams, meaning these events will likely happen next solutions could include moving the World Cup to winter months, as Qatar did in 2022, but severe cold is also an issue in parts of the US and of Fifa's technical study group Arsene Wenger addressed stoppages from its base in said: "It's not ideal, I agree, because you want the flow of the game from the first to the last minute but, as well, when you organise a competition you have [to put] security first."Fifa also issued a statement at the time of the incident which read: "Due to adverse weather conditions in Charlotte, including the risk of lightning in the vicinity of Bank of America Stadium, the Fifa Club World Cup match between SL Benfica and Chelsea FC has been suspended. Fifa will follow the established safety protocols, and the match will resume as soon as it's safe to do so."Fifa was asked for a response to Maresca's comments.

Chelsea book Club World Cup quarter-final spot after long weather delay
The Blues were just four minutes away from victory in normal time in Charlotte after a stunning Reece James free-kick when a thunderstorm forced the players off the field. After a stoppage of almost two hours, Angel Di Maria equalised from the penalty spot but Chelsea roused themselves in extra-time after the Portuguese giants had Gianluca Prestianni sent off. Christopher Nkunku struck from close range in the 108th minute before further goals from Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wrapped up a deserved triumph, four hours and 38 minutes after kick-off at the Bank of America Stadium. And breathe. Up the Chels!!! 💙 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 29, 2025 Enzo Maresca's side will face Palmeiras in the last eight in Philadelphia on Friday after their defeat of Brazilian rivals Botafogo earlier on Saturday. Influential midfielder Moises Caicedo will not be available after he was booked in the second half in North Carolina. Chelsea dominated the majority of the game, but failed to make the most of a succession of chances in the first half. Marc Cucurella curled a shot around goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin but Antonio Silva reacted quickly to head off the line. Trubin then tipped an effort round the post from Cole Palmer before smothering another attempt from Cucurella. A rare attack from Benfica was thwarted when James blocked an Andreas Schjelderup shot but Palmer was similarly frustrated by the impressive Silva at the other end. Chelsea carried their momentum into the second half but a Palmer cross was deflected away from goal by Nicolas Otamendi and Caicedo drove wide. Chelsea finally got the reward their superiority deserved as James chanced his arm from a set-piece on 64 minutes. The Blues skipper appeared to be lining up to cross from wide on the left but instead whipped a curling right-foot shot over the two-man wall and inside the near post. Benfica tried to respond and Evangelos Pavlidis appealed for a penalty after a tussle with Benoit Badiashile but nothing was given. Liam Delap put the ball in the net for Chelsea but was flagged offside. The game had largely been played in sweltering heat, but as a storm neared in the closing minutes, play was suspended. It became the latest of a series of games in the tournament to be paused due to the weather. The players were pictured during the enforced break kicking a ball and exercising in the dressing room. The stoppage worked to Benfica's benefit as they won a penalty when Otamendi's nod down brushed the arm of Malo Gusto and was harshly ruled as a penalty. Di Maria made no mistake from the spot – his fourth successful penalty of the tournament – to force extra-time. Benfica were reduced to 10 men when Prestianni received a second booking for a foul on Levi Colwill. Chelsea took control and went close when Palmer had a shot saved by Trubin, but Sanchez needed to be alert to deny Di Maria moments later. Nkunku broke through when he struck at the second attempt after an initial effort was blocked by Otamendi and Neto and Dewsbury-Hall added gloss to the scoreline.

Jadon Sancho thinks Chelsea are signing a top-drawer player after rejecting him
Chelsea decided to pay Manchester United rather than sign Jadon Sancho this summer, but he's a big fan of the player expected to take his place at Stamford Bridge After heading out of the Stamford Bridge exit this summer, Jadon Sancho has already shown his love for the man likely to replace him at Chelsea. And he would know a thing or two about Jamie Gittens, having previously played in the same Borussia Dortmund line-up. Sancho, 25, spent this season on loan in west London but failed to make enough of an impact to convince the Blues to sign him permanently. In fact, Chelsea paid parent club Manchester United £5million to circumvent his purchase clause in the hopes they could make better use of their funds. And it appears Dortmund winger Gittens is the preferred option as he homes in on a return to Cobham this summer. Niko Kovac insisted his attacker only missed his side's Club World Cup win over Ulsan because of illness, but it's been suggested the omission was actually due to the fact that Gittens is on the verge of leaving. The Sun claim Chelsea are now on the verge of signing the winger in a £55.5m deal. Sancho previously impressed at the Westfalenstadion before returning to the club on a short-term loan last year. He struck up a bond with Gittens during that spell and reached out to his fellow Englishman last winter when the 20-year-old really started to take off as a first-team talent. "He [Sancho] wrote to me to say, 'Keep it up,'" Gittens told the Dortmund website in December. "'It's your time to show everyone what you can do.' He is a top player and also a top friend." Sancho also complimented Gittens in public last season after the youngster scored twice in a Champions League win over Club Brugge. The United winger commented on one of Gittens' Instagram posts by calling him a "balla [baller]" as a show of support for his work. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has already confessed that the club will sign a new winger this summer after Mykhailo Mudryk missed more than half of this season. The Ukrainian tested positive for a banned substance and is facing a potential four-year ban as a result. Add Sancho's departure into the equation, and Chelsea's need for reinforcements out wide becomes even more dire. Brazilian winger Estevao is due to arrive in England after completing his transfer from Palmeiras, but the 18-year-old will require some easing into his Premier League surroundings. Gittens and Sancho spent just six months together as team-mates in Germany, but it's evident the latter made an impact in that time. And former Chelsea academy prospect Gittens admitted as much at the conclusion of a breakthrough 2023/24 campaign. "I've learned a lot from Jadon," he told German outlet WAZ in July 2024. "For example, that I have to play with one or two touches more often, that I have to offer deeper runs more often. And when he plays, he enjoys himself; I've learned that too. Jadon is a friend." Gittens spent a brief period of time training with Chelsea's academy as a youngster but never went full-time in their ranks. And it just so happens he made his Champions League debut in a 1-0 win over the Premier League giants in February 2023. After scoring 12 goals in 49 appearances for Dortmund last season (both career highs), Gittens appears to have done enough to earn Chelsea's interest once again. And it seems as though Sancho is among his advocates as he prepares for a summer homecoming.
