ALBAWABA - Sotheby's, one of the world's largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewelry, and collectibles, announced an upcoming auction for the viral banana artwork by Maurizio Cattelan, the famous Italian visual artist. The artwork, titled 'Comedian,' is a conceptual piece featuring a banana taped to a wall. It will be auctioned by Sotheby's this November with an estimated price of $1.5 million, according to Bloomberg.
"To me, Comedian was not a joke; it was a sincere commentary and a reflection on what we value. At art fairs, speed and business reign, so I saw it like this: if I had to be at a fair, I could sell a banana like others sell their paintings. I could play within the system, but with my rules,' stated Cattelan.
According to CNN, the winner of the auction will receive a roll of duct tape and one banana, along with a certificate of authenticity and official installation instructions. (AFP)
The famous banana artwork was first introduced in 2019 at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair and gained significant recognition since it was sold for $120,000 five years ago.People lined up to see the viral banana artwork in 2019 when Georgian-American artist David Datuna grabbed, peeled, and ate the banana in front of the crowd. 'After visiting Jordan late last year, my team and I were astonished by the breadth of available landscapes and the production service infrastructure already in place at Olivewood,' said Mosallam, who joined the company earlier this year following roles at Apple TV+ and Netflix. 'Now with the benefit of sound stages, the Kingdom is well-positioned to house and host domestic and international productions of any size.' Jordan has long been a favored destination for filmmakers, with its unique mix of ancient heritage sites and dramatic desert backdrops. Major Hollywood productions such as Dune, The Martian, Star Wars: Episode IX, and Aladdin have all filmed in the country, capitalizing on its cinematic landscapes like Petra and Wadi Rum. Despite a recent dip in international filming interest due to regional instability following the events of October 7, 2023, Jordan's film industry is actively working to regain momentum. The change is designed to halt the use of kirakira (shiny or glittery) names that have proliferated among parents hoping to add a creative flourish to their children's names – creating administrative headaches for local authorities and, in some cases, inviting derision from classmates. While the revisions to the family registry act do not ban kanji – Chinese-based characters in written Japanese – parents are required to inform local authorities of their phonetic reading, in an attempt to banish unusual or controversial pronunciations. Kainan, a coastal town in Japan that is trying to lure new residents with the surname Suzuki to address its declining population. Now, only officially recognised renderings of kanji characters will be permitted, as the government seeks to end the confusion outlandish names can cause in schools, hospitals and other public services. The debate over kirakira names has been raging since the 1990s, prompted by the rise in monikers based on unorthodox readings of kanji.
