Jet Lost as US Carrier Evades Houthi Attack
A $60 million fighter jet has been 'lost' at sea at a moment American naval assets under US Central Command have been conducting bombing campaigns against Yemen's Houthis since March 15.
But as far as what's being reported from the Pentagon, the jet wasn't shot out of the sky during operations – it apparently rolled off an aircraft carrier.
The US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet 'fell overboard from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while it was being towed on board, the Navy said in a statement on Monday,' CNN reports.
Initial reports strongly suggest the mishap was caused due to the Truman carrier having to take sudden evasive action to avoid inbound Houthi fire:
A US official said that initial reports from the scene indicated that the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard. The Houthi rebel group claimed on Monday to have launched a drone and missile attack on the aircraft carrier, which is in the Red Sea as part of the US military's major anti-Houthi operation.
A naval crew member had been able to jump off the jet at the last minute when the accident occurred as it was being towed out of the hanger bay. One sailor reportedly sustained minor injury.
The Houthis said Monday they launched a fresh attack targeting the Truman carrier, following many other such claimed attacks. This appears to be the first time the US Navy has linked damage aboard a warship with an inbound Houthi assault (albeit somewhat indirectly). A prior incident involving 'friendly fire' against a US jet also resulted in the aircraft's loss (see below).

New police search begins in hunt for missing Madeleine McCann
AFP | Lagos, Portugal Portuguese and German police on Tuesday started a new search in the hunt for missing British toddler Madeleine McCann -- 18 years after she disappeared while on holiday with her parents. Madeleine, aged three, disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz in southern Portugal, sparking an international campaign to find her and unprecedented media coverage. A previous search of a lake near the resort two years ago yielded no results, but on Tuesday investigators were back in a part of nearby Lagos to hunt for clues. Several police vehicles were seen driving down a dirt road and a Portuguese police spokeswoman confirmed that the search had begun, with about 25 German investigators present. The new searches are expected to continue until Friday and are being conducted at the request of German authorities investigating Christian Brueckner, a convicted rapist who is suspected of having killed Madeleine. According to the British tabloid The Sun, investigators are equipped with ground radar technology that can scan the ground down to 4.5 metres (15 feet) in depth. The area includes a cottage where Brueckner was living near the Ocean Club resort and undergrowth. The area is dotted with wells and ditches, it added. Portuguese police refused to comment on the report when contacted by AFP. A mobile phone registered in Brueckner's name was traced close to the family's accommodation on the night Madeleine went missing. - Determined - Brueckner, 48, is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for the rape in 2005 of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz. His sentence is due to end in September. He was acquitted in October 2024 in Germany at trial for two sexual assaults and three rapes committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. The German authorities in 2020 said they were convinced of Brueckner's involvement in Madeleine's disappearance, which gained worldwide publicity and has seen several false leads. He has not been charged in connection with the McCann case. Brueckner, who according to German media had a string of previous convictions, including for sexual offences, assault and theft, worked as an odd-job man during his 10 years in the Algarve, but also burgled hotel rooms and holiday apartments. At the time of Madeleine's disappearance he was living in a camper van. A former neighbour in Portugal told Sky News television in 2020 that he was "always a bit angry, driving fast up and down the lane, and then one day, around 2006, he just disappeared without a word". He returned to Germany in 2007 -- the year Madeleine disappeared -- settling in Hanover, but still spent time in Portugal. On the 18th anniversary of their daughter's disappearance on May 3 this year, Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann said they were still determined to find out what happened. "The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to 'leave no stone unturned' is unwavering," they wrote on the website. "We will do our utmost to achieve this."

‘Sky's the limit' for Tiafoe at French Open
AFP | Paris Frances Tiafoe believes the 'sky's the limit' for him after reaching the French Open quarter-finals for the first time on Sunday. The American downed German world number 66 Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in the last 16 to set up a match with Lorenzo Musetti for a semi-final place. It will be Tiafoe's first ATP quarter-final since finishing runner-up at a low-key event in Houston in March. 'It's been horrible. I've been travelling around, and it hasn't been fun at all,' he said. 'Kind of faced it. After that it gave me space to just play. You know, when I can play, I can play. This is not really something that's like a shock. 'When I'm playing well, I'm there and present and having fun, I think the sky's the limit for me.' The 27-year-old, who has reached at least the quarters at the last three US Opens, is yet to drop a set in Paris and is confident he can go even further. 'I've been the super dark horse. I don't think anyone is really thinking that I was going to even be in this position,' added Tiafoe. 'But at the same time, I don't really look at it like house money. 'Now that I'm here, I'm like, 'Let 's win'. I was having dinner yesterday. I'm like, ' Yeah, feeling great, butlet's keep winning ' . There 's no thing more fun than winning. 'Once I get my feet going and matches under me, I'm dangerous. Then I'm feeling really good, and I'll play anybody.'

US warplane falls off aircraft carrier into Red Sea
A multi-million-dollar US warplane fell off the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier into the Red Sea on Monday in an accident that injured one sailor, the Navy said. A tractor that was towing the fighter plane -- a model that cost $67 million in 2021 -- also slipped off the ship into the sea. 'The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard,' the Navy said in a statement. 'Sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard,' it said. 'All personnel are accounted for, with one sailor sustaining a minor injury.' The carrier and its other planes remain in action and the incident is under investigation, the Navy added. No details of recovery work were released. It is the second F/A-18 operating off the Truman to be lost in less than six months, after another was mistakenly shot down by the USS Gettysburg guided missile cruiser late last year in incident that both pilots survived. The Truman is one of two US aircraft carriers operating in the Middle East, where US forces have been hammering Yemen's Huthi rebels with strikes since mid-March in an attempt to end the threat they pose to ships in the region.
