Rappu launches limited-time pop-up this month with free seaweed rice burgers on May 16
Japanese restaurant Rappu at Duxton might be known for its viral handrolls, but this May, it's introducing Rappu-giri, a limited-time pop-up selling sushi seaweed burgers. The pop-up will run from May 16 to July 5 at café-bar Stay Gold Flamingo on 69 Amoy Street.
Forget regular buns – here, your 'burger' comes wrapped in crispy Japanese rice and premium seaweed, then stuffed with fillings like spam and egg ($8) and salmon mentaiko ($14). More luxurious toppings include Peking duck, unagi ($20), and even wagyu beef. One thing Rappu does well with its handrolls is to serve its seaweed wrappers warm, retaining all their crispiness, so we're expecting the same at Rappu-giri.
To pair with the rice burgers, Stay Gold Flamingo will also be slinging Japanese café-style drinks, with both boozy and booze-free options to complete the experience.
Here's the real kicker though: on opening day (May 16), free Rappu-giri will be given out from 11.30am onwards till they're all snapped up. But if you don't manage to get your hands on the complimentary burgers, fret not, you still have eight more weeks to try them till the pop-up concludes in July.

Dawn Austin has some rare dolls worth thousands Dawn Austin is the UK's biggest Barbie fan - boasting more than 850 dolls in her ever-growing collection. The adult collector has splashed out more than £30,000 on Mattel merchandise, which has become "like family" and is now worth double that. The 45 year old has also taken up restoring Barbies in her free time, increasing the value of some of her dolls even further. She estimates her entire collection is now worth an astonishing £60,000 - and while husband Steve is supportive, he does have one rule: no dolls in the bedroom. Dawn and Steve are facing a space issue as her collection continues to expand. Speaking to What's the Jam, she said: "I have reached a certain stage with my collection, and I am faced with the dilemma of whether I should sell some items I am not as attached to any more in order to make space, or just move? "And [moving] does seem like a more likely option." Dawn's impressive collection has attracted attention from thousands on social media and even Mattel, the doll's manufacturer, sent her a special selection of gifts for Barbie's 65th anniversary. To protect them from dust and damage, Dawn displays her hundreds of dolls in glass cabinets throughout her house. The only room off-limits to her collection is the bedroom, which is Steve's one rule around his wife's hobby. Dawn said: "When I met Steve, he drove me to conventions and spent weekends with me scouring markets and charity shops. I fell in love with the craftsmanship and their history." She recently bagged one of the original Black Barbie dolls for a mere £10 at a toy show. And she boasts other coveted pieces like a Japanese exclusive skipper, a rare Korean wonder woman and a Ponytail Barbie number two valued at close to £6,000. Dawn has no intentions of parting with any item from her collection, however. She said: "I couldn't bear to ever get rid of them. They're like family to me." Not every purchase has been thrifty either. Dawn admitted she's splurged thousands on several dolls and only sells one if she's found another in better condition. Dawn, like many young girls, got her first doll during her childhood which sparked her "obsessed" phase. It led her to seek out Barbies at every opportunity until she grew out of it in her adolescence and even gave up her childhood collection. It was years later, as an adult, that she stumbled upon a doll listing on eBay, reigniting her passion. She said: "When the doll arrived, I was ecstatic. I bought more and more, and before I knew it, I had no room left. That didn't stop me, though. "As a child, Barbie was a character I could turn into anything I wanted her to be. She represented to me the idea that I could be anything I wanted to be – through the power of play and imagination, I could explore being a rock star, actress, doctor, even a nun. "Now, as an adult collector, I see her as a cultural icon of sorts. I enjoy the hunt for the items and find scrolling on eBay looking for them relaxing after work – it's a nice way to wind down." For those keen on starting their own impressive doll collection, Dawn offered some advice,saying: "For new collectors, I recommend buying what you love and what makes you happy. Try to get the items as mint as you possibly can, learn how to restore well, and set budgets and stick to them! Life in plastic is really fantastic."

'Best film ever made' with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score now streaming on Amazon Prime
Over 100 professional critics have hailed the 'masterpiece' as 'one of the best films ever made' and Amazon Prime subscribers can now watch it from home. A "glorious" 1956 film that boasts a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes is now streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. The 208-minute epic has been praised unanimously by 102 professional critics with a near-impossible 100% rating, coupled with an audience approval of 97% based on over 50,000 reviews. Crafted by the legendary director Akira Kurosawa and unfolding within 16th-century Japan, Seven Samurai tells the tale of a destitute farming village that opts to employ seven ronin, masterless samurai, for protection against impending bandit raids after their next harvest. Kurosawa's direction is sublime, meticulously developing the story with themes of duty, sacrifice, and human connection taking centre stage, the Express reports. One critic on Rotten Tomatoes applauded the film, stating: "The glorious vigour and strength of this film is presented with such theatrical relish and flair: its energy flashes out of the screen like a sword." Another impressed reviewer praised: "Seven Samurai is one of the crown jewels of cinema, a movie that could be screened for visiting aliens in order to show what the art form can achieve." Yet another fan remarked: "Kurosawa's epic adventure masterpiece is one of the best films ever made." A fourth branded it as "among the best of the best action films". Somebody else acknowledged: "Although Kurosawa blends the styles of Japanese cinema with Western sensibilities, the buildup of suspense is approached in near complete contrast to that of modern movies." Guided by the experienced and wise Kambei, the film follows the village as the samurai readies them for combat by strengthening the village and training them in warfare. The streaming platform has also finally added what's been dubbed by viewers as the 'best horror movie of 2024' and described as a 'masterclass in suspense'. Heretic, which boasts a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, appeared on the platform's coming soon list over a month ago and it's finally here. The plot follows two young missionaries who become trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they knock on the door of the diabolical Mr. Reed, played by British actor Hugh Grant. Stuck in his home, they must turn to their faith if they want to make it out alive. The movie caused quite a stir when it was released in cinemas last year, as it stars Hugh Grant in a very different role to his usual on screen portrayals. Grant's impressive performance earned him a BAFTA 2025 nomination for Best Leading Actor.

My first visit to the bar was actually for Burns Night two years ago when I discovered it through an event they were hosting alongside the Bacardi portfolio Scotch whisky brands: Craigellachie, Aberfeldy and Royal Brackla. The selected drams were paired with different small plates, and it was a lovely way to spend Burns Night. Perhaps not your traditional Burns Night celebration with tartan and haggis, but a great chance to showcase scotch whisky in a modern and fun way. João's Place is continuing their celebration of flavour by pairing food and drinks together as they are just launching their "Taste of João's" menu which includes an aperitivo cocktail and six different dishes where the Brazilian and Japanese influences are combined. Guests also have the option of adding on a drinks package of either paired wines or cocktails. It is definitely bound to be a great night out for those seeking something new and a bit different from their food and drinks. There always seems to be something fun and a bit different to be found on the menu. On this most recent visit, I tried a cocktail that combined the flavours of mint, cinnamon and pineapple, which certainly was unlike anything I have ever tried before, but it had such a refreshing and invigorating taste. Elsewhere, a fun feature on the menu is the "design your own highball" section, which involves picking your Japanese spirit - whisky, gin or vodka -, your season and your mixer. I am definitely coming back to João's Place just to try this out as I'm a big fan of highballs, and especially in the warmer months of the year. I think it is going to be the Japanese whisky paired with the autumn flavours of jasmine, plum and apricot with tonic water for me, but if I am in a different mood, I will let that decide my choices in the moment. If you fancy a small bite with your drinks, there are sushi plates available on the menu from Sushisamba, which is located on the same floor. I can tell you from personal research that sushi goes incredibly well with whisky, but I might be slightly biased, considering these are two of my top favourites in the food and drink world. My whisky of the week is Nikka Coffey Malt, which was one of the very first whiskies I tried from a Japanese whisky company. This whisky is made from 100% malted barley but has been distilled through a Coffey still. This might be the whisky I need to thank for my interest in grain whisky, but compared to many of the single grains I have tried from Scotland, the Coffey Malt has a lovely mix of spices like cloves and cinnamon, rather than a vanilla ice cream note. The spices are balanced out with a soft grassiness and elegant sandalwood.
